I was watching the old episodes from season 1 and I notice how fat pikachu was I mean he looked as big as a jiggypuff and was he really that overweight. No wonder why he couldn't win most of the matches he was in especially being that fat:-p.

Not just in the anime, but in the games too. :P(I would link this to the old Sugimori artwork, but I don't have the link.)

Though Ash being the Pikachu-obbessed guy he is(or was), overused Pikachu, thus Pikachu became fit. :D

Well, in ep. 5, Brock did say "Pikachu's in its cutest stage"

So I guess he grew up D:

yea i noticed this, haha pika sure looked like a fatty back then. i wonder what the actual reasoning from the artists was tho.

Pikachu was fat and spoiled during the first few episodes.
Then, it changed for the better after a few gym battls and Team Rocket.

Man if pikachu looked like that today not only would he lose most of the time but buneary wouldn't even take a second look at him because then he wouldn't be so dashing to her especially with all that flab:lol:.

If you look at the earliest Sugimori drawings of Pikachu, the first thing you might notice is how football-shaped it is.

It happens with every cartoon character. As time goes on, the character's design changes, becoming more sleeker as stylized as the artists who draw it get more and more used to drawing it.

Pikachu was originally designed as just another critter, and based on a mouse. As it became more popular, it became gradually more anthropomorphic, because they figured players and viewers would want to relate more to it. Since it can't talk, it's easier to give Pikachu more of a personality if it's more human-looking.

You do know its a joke thread about Pikachu being a fatty right and yes I know the real reason why pikachu looked that big in the old seasons.

Pikachu wasn't the only one. Nyasu was a lot chubbier compared to new episodes. Remember how Pikachu used to be more of a comic relief? Getting in trouble with the treadmill and an apple? Those things are gone with his roundness. ;/

IMO, Pikachu's face and upper body look like that of a human baby these days. Ironically, I swear there was a baby in the Hitmon episode that did look like Pikachu, so it's as if someone made a tongue-in-cheek reference before there was anything to reference in the first place. Whooo~

In any case, it's not surprisng that Pika has seen alterations, though it is rather strange that it's become so different from how Sugimori draws the character. His drawings aren't 'fat' anymore either, but the face in particular is largely different to the anime's depiction...

Here is a good example

Eh wow Pikachu, have you lost some weight or what!

I like the newer look. That art feels ancient because it came out just when Pokemon was introduced.

Anyone who's owned dogs can tell you all about the reality of giving animals "healthy" human food. :3

Though considering they eat pretty much just soup and riceballs in the show, I dunno.
