A discussion in the BW2 thread concerning the starters and players stances with them had me curious enough to actually want to find out: Within these past five generations have you ever ditched your starter for someone else? What was your reasons? How was the experience? Is there a reason why you never could/never will?

To be fair, I'll start first: Yes, in Generation 4 the starters as a whole left me unimpressed (and as a fan of the Torchic family I outright disliked the Chimchar family) so despite me choosing Turtwig in Platinum as soon as I managed to catch a female Shinx with a Bold nature (personal narrative reasons) I boxed it and made that my starter. Made the first gym downright harder as she (Luxio at that point) was all I had and forced me to actually use the the battle items.

It was first times all around.

Yes, plenty of times. Mostly just because I get bored of using them and want to try different teams.

No, to this point I've always used my starters on all of my in-game teams.

However, if the starters in B/W2 are unchanged from B/W... That will be changing.

No, and I probably never will. I generally like most of the starters. I don't think any of them are bad enough to ditch. :(

I ditched Seperior after learning what moves he can learn. Really? Mainly Grass types. NO POISON (Damaging)??? And I don't plan on doing competitive until BW2

I like to think that the starter is a responsability to have.

Even if it sucks, or even if it overshadows the rest of the team, I simply must train it and keep it in the main team. It's how I play the game, there's no other way around it.

Even in things like the battle frontier and subway it stays. And if I were more of a competitive battler I'd still bring it with me there.

I ditched Torchic in my last play through of Emerald, (a few years ago) and I'm ditching my starter in my most recent Black run through as soon as I can. Don't really like the V starters.

I never have ditched my starters, but it sounds like an interesting thing to do, as it seems the starters just get more uncool as the series goes on.

I ditch my starter sometimes, though I usually keep my Starter for the whole game but it depends on what Pokemon I need for a Gym or Elite 4, for example I boxed Chikorita in Soul Silver because I didnt intend on evolving it and replaced it with another Pokemon.

I think I've only ever attempted it once in Crystal, but I didn't get very far because I eventually got bored. Otherwise, I seem to always stick with my starter...

Who knows, maybe one day I'll do a Nuzlocke run where I ditch the starter, for story purposes and stuff.

I did this once with Snivy on my Black run. It was an awful Pokémon because of its boring attacks and strange stats...didn't enjoy it at all.
So I ditched it for a Sawk.

Funny thing is...I trained all starters exept for Meganium ingame, but only the Snivy line felt rather lackluster.

Nope. My starter usually gets to a high level, and I just can't ditch it at that point. I become attached to it.

On my current run through Black I have been using Squirtle insetad of my original starter Oshawott. I did to use non-Unova Pokémon on my team. It has been the only time I have done it though. On the rest of the games I have always used my starter (including White, in which I used Oshawott).

I never ditch my starter. D8 My in-game team ALWAYS has 3 archetypes: Starter, Flyer, Surfer, and 3 other Pokemon. To me, getting rid of your starter is just mean. S/He started a journey with you, to go change the world and put your name into history! That's like leaving a kitten in a cardboard box. ...not really, but that's how I feel about ditching starters.

I benched Feraligatr in SS. I think that was the only starter I've played that I didn't like.

I've only replaced my starter once. I always use my starter, but when I got Platinum (because I already had Diamond), I wanted to do something different with my team, so I traded out my Torterra for Lucario. I considered it for B2/W2 but since these are not just 3rd version remakes, I'll probably just use either Snivy or Tepig since I used Oshawott in Black.
