I seem to have missed the meeting where everyone sat down and decided we needed to spend stupid amounts of money making our TVs have a slightly crisper look to them.

Could someone please fill me in on why HDTV is worth spending £500 for a simple TV and why it's adding an extra £150 to the PS3 and 360? 'Cause I really, really, really do not get it.
 
Some background information

In the United States, the goverment has mandated that all broadcast TV networks (CBS, ABC, FOX, etc.) must switch to an HDTV format by 2007.
 
No, certainly not with those prices.
