I didn't see a thread for headcanons at all, and I think it'd be kinda interesting to see peoples' ideas about the characters. Got the idea from a tumblr blog, so I thought I'd bring it here!

I suppose I'll start it off.

I am of the opinion that Burgh is Todd Snap's big brother. They're both ginger, and they both have a love of an art form and nature. But Todd went to Kanto in a huff because he can't stand the fact that his big brother trains Pokemon instead of leaving them in their natural habitat like he feels they should be.

Anyone got anything? :>

  • Proton is the guy who killed the mother Marowak back in RBY/FRLG. And he enjoyed it.
  • Ariana is Silver's mom; I think this is a popular one. Though I don't subscribe to the idea that Mars is Silver's sister; if anything her and Ariana are very distantly related.
  • Okay, bear with me here, because this is convoluted: when Team Rocket opened the "souvenir shop" in Mahogany Town, the shop was a cover for some illegal stuff they were selling. They then purposely sold illegal goods like Slowpoke tails there in turn to divert people's attention away from the radio machine. Think about it, guys. If there was a shady shop in your neighborhood, you'd probably believe that they're selling drugs, but you're not going to believe that they have some secret animal-torture-sonic-death-ray. I mean, that's just stupid. Team Rocket knew that most people wouldn't accept weird or crazy shit like that as true, and they exploited that disbelief for all it was worth.
  • The reason Bug works well against Psychic- look at the names and descriptions of some Bug-type attacks. Signal Beam, Bug Buzz. Silver Wind attacks with irritating scales. Leech Life reminds me of mosquitoes, and we all know it's hard to concentrate when one of those is in the room. Steamroller has a chance of making the opponent flinch, and the description for Struggle Bug says the attacker hits while flailing around/struggling. What are psychic powers based on? The mind. I'd imagine in order to use them properly the Pokemon has to have absolute concentration. A lot of Bug-type moves are really distracting and annoying, so they can break that concentration.
  • Lucian doesn't have psychic powers. He understands how they work, and has a general idea about how to counter them with his limited normal-person capabilities, but he doesn't have them himself.

That's what I think too. Of course, he probably sits there during conferences and while Tate, Liza, Caitlin, Will and Sabrina are like LEVITATE STUUUUUFF he's like '.....*foreveralone.jpg*'

let's see now....other stuff.

-Underneath Will's mask isn't scars or anything mysterious. It's freckles. He wants to hide them because he wants to be taken seriously, and thinks freckles make him look too cutesy and adorable.

-Lucian, Eusine and Will are brothers. Lucian is the oldest, Eusine is the middle child and Will is the youngest. Their mother and father paid a lot of attention to Lucian since he's the oldest, and Will since he's the baby, but Eusine fell through the cracks a lot and did a lot of things for attention. It made him bitter, so he buried himself in the legends involving the beasts of Ecruteak until that was all he had. Because of that, he has phenomenal anger problems and an unhealthy obsession with Suicune.

I think its more real canon that Lucian doesn't have psychic powers. There's nothing in the games to suggest he (or even most Psychic trainers) do. The only line I've seen was in a Bulbapedia trivia where someone took it upon themselves to take a line of coincidence "Ah, you timed your arrival well. I've just finished reading a book..." as foresight, when it was clearly just coincidental.

As for me...

The sprites are just stereotypes of the characters. Psychics have images of them levitating Pokeballs, but that's clearly just a stereotyped image of psychics likely propagated by more prominent Psychic trainers with powers such as Sabrina. In contrast, we hear dialogue from these trainer classes that seem like they're faking their powers.
-Underneath Will's mask isn't scars or anything mysterious. It's freckles. He wants to hide them because he wants to be taken seriously, and thinks freckles make him look too cutesy and adorable.
He's a magician pulling Pokeballs from his sleeves, while wearing a semi-flamboyant outfit. I doubt the mask is anything but a magician's prop. There's also nothing in real canon to suggest he's scarred for you to counter it with your fanon. It's more accurate to assume that he wears the mask to hide his freckles and being a magician is just a convenient excuse to do so.

Of course, my head canons are more or less linked in my signature.

Character specific ones include:

Humans aren't powerless beings

Charon worked for Silph Co. before being recruited by Cyrus. He was recruited to make Porygon-Z in order to find Dialga and Palkia, but like other Porygon models, did not live up to expectations (or so they thought)...
Ravio was the hero of Oblivia and the whole "Past Missions" thing was a means for Ben/Summer to mold him to be that hero

Half of the Will fans I know think that Will is either blind or has scars under it a la Phantom of the Opera in their fanon. It's one of the biggest fanon theories regarding him that I've seen. And while I don't mind that theory, the fact that people are going 'omg he wears a mask it must be from a tragic accident' is kinda like....really? Though I can't say my theories are any better, some are pretty cracky.

-Clay has a son who races Dodrios near Fuschia City.

I'm more willing to accept freckles instead of scars considering the majority of the English-speaking fandom seem to like to insert as much dark and edgy aspects as they can. It makes Will seem more like a slightly more complex character rather than a simple template character from fan fiction. Rather than hiding some deep dark stories, one of the world's strongest is hiding insecurities about blemishes on his face.

Fans just assumed he lost an eye because of an old picture in which he wasn't drawn with another eye, despite it seeming to be common practice to simply not draw the second eye when it's being occluded by hair even if the hair realistically doesn't cover the whole eye. It could be simply a reflection of the mask, and his new artwork certainly shows such a reflection on both eyes.

It has to just be the reflection, considering you can clearly see both eyes in his overworld sprite. I mean, superheroes wear masks like that and I'm pretty sure a majority of them aren't blind. Usually I like putting kinda darker spins on stuff, but this is definitely one case where it doesn't really apply.

I used to think he did only have one eye, a while ago. Like when GSC was still the latest game. But then I saw the manga and I was like '....hm. Maybe not.'

The only one-eyed characters I like currently are Big Boss, and he's not even in Pokemon.

Right now, though, I've got two divergent theories.

The first is that the mask hides something unsightly but still totally mundane like freckles or, as I like to think, a port wine stain.

The second is that he's actually got a perfectly clear, normal face, but just feels naked without the mask. I wear glasses and have refused contacts or corrective surgery for years, just because my face looks so plain without them.

Awwww. The idea of Will with a port wine stain is actually kinda cute. :>

The most that would've happened then is that he would've gotten unnecessarily teased and bullied as a kid. Which is still bad, but it's something plausible and relatable, not...you know, getting your entire family murdered or something.

I also think that there are some things in the Pokedex that are false, and some that are true, but given lots of the powers Pokemon have, people tend to err on the side of caution.

Okay like for example "you're not going to die if it looks you in the eyes, but I'm sorry, it actually DOES eat people."

I always thought that Hawes originally worked for Professor Oak in Kanto. How else would he get a Dome Fossil and a Dragonite skeleton, without having been in Kanto for a long time?

Archaeologists usually do travel. Fossils don't get up and walk to them.

I don't know why it would be Professor Oak, his research doesn't suggest any particular interest in fossils. If anything, good relations with the Pewter Museum is more likely, and good relations with Brock since he was mentioned to have helped on excavations of Mt. Moon. Other than that, the Cinnabar lab would be the next best bet considering their fossil regeneration program.

Dragonites are also known to travel the world, and to illustrate this, they are actually catchable on very rare occasions in BW.

My headcanon is as follows:

  • The Pokémon nation as a whole—with the exception of Unova, which is probably another nation entirely—is located in the northern hemisphere, somewhere between Japan and California.
  • The anime and all manga exist as works of fiction in the gameverse. The individuals upon whom the stories are based have refused to comment on the matter.
  • Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness both take place prior to Generations I and III.
    • The Ho-Oh obtained by Wes in Colosseum and the Lugia obtained by Michael in XD: Gale of Darkness are later released, becoming the same Ho-Oh and Lugia found at Navel Rock, and later Bell Tower and the Whirl Islands, respectively.
  • Generations I and III take place in 1996.
    • Red and Leaf are twin siblings.
    • Giovanni's Japanese name, "Sakaki", is his surname.
    • May is Hoenn's main protagonist, with Brendan as Birch's son.
  • Generations II and IV take place in 1999.
    • Ethan is Johto's main protagonist, with Lyra in the supporting role.
    • Ariana is Silver's mother; Mars is also a relative, probably a sister or cousin.
    • "Silver" is an alias. His real name is Kamon Sakaki.
    • In-universe, Kris and Lyra are the same character. Sort-of-but-not-quite-in-universe, Lyra is The Other Darrin who took over when Kris declined to reprise the role.
    • Pokémon Stadium 2's White City is an actual city in Johto, with Unova's Black City as its counterpart.
    • Lugia is encountered before Ho-Oh.
    • The battle against Red is only winnable for gameplay purposes—Ethan actually lost that fight.
    • Dawn is Sinnoh's main protagonist, with Lucas as Rowan's assistant.
    • Bertha is Agatha's sister.
  • Generation V takes place in 2010.
    • Hilbert and Hilda are twin siblings, possibly separated at birth. Which one is the canon protagonist is up in the air.
    • Black City takes precedence over White Forest, serving as a counterpart to White City in Johto.
  • Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus all share a universe and exist as works of fiction in the Pokéverse, as evidenced by a Mario game in Copycat's SNES in Generation I, a Zelda cartridge in a Nintendo 64 in Pokémon Stadium 2, Mario originating with Donkey Kong, Link and Samus' cameos in Super Mario RPG, and the presence of Metroids in Kid Icarus. However....
    • Pokémon itself acknowledges its own status as a work of fiction with Game Freak's presence, among other things. So what's the reality? Obviously, Super Smash Bros., which is about a kid playing with Nintendo action figures.

Ooh. I like the Ho-Oh and Lugia idea. That'd make sense.

I also thought that the physical similarities, and the similarities in name with Bertha and Agatha in both Japanese and English, were too obvious to not be canon o_o By name alone, even. Bertha, Agatha. Kikuno, Kikuko. And if DPPt takes place 3 years after RBY, they could easily be twins. Agatha's hair is that greyish blonde, while Bertha's hair is just plain grey. 3 years could easily turn grey-blonde hair full grey.

I, uh, have a lot, some of it indefensible.

People:

  • Professor Oak was once Kanto's Champion. After he left his spot to become a professor, the position has been left empty, though Lance acts as de facto Champion by the time the protagonists start their journeys.
  • Silver was born to Giovanni and Ariana. He was groomed to inherit Team Rocket, but it clearly didn't pan out.
  • Silver isn't his given name, but he likes "Silver" better. He claims he's been named after the mountain.
  • His pokémon never considered him truly cruel.
  • He never wanted that shuckle anyway.
  • Silver was horrified when he saw Ethan in a Rocket uniform. Later on, he couldn't figure out why.
  • He hates Cameron the photographer, especially the one in Goldenrod Tunnel, who seems to have an endless supply of Rocket uniforms. He hates it when Ethan and Lyra take pictures of themselves as pretend-Rocket grunts.
  • All of those photographers are really just part of a huge family, with the last name Cameron. At least one is a really impressive trainer and can access Mt. Silver.
  • It's a hat. But, sometimes, Brendan wishes he had awesome spiky hair.
  • That time in Emerald, when Steven just kind of waits around in Sootopolis, and Wallace has you climb Sky Pillar yourself? They're not just being terrible people. They hope you succeed, but they're not having anything ride on it. They're ready to take down Groudon and Kyogre themselves, if need be. But it's a relief that you succeed, because such an epic battle would probably destroy the homes of everyone in Sootopolis.
  • Charon was a part of Silph and Team Rocket before being recruited by Cyrus. He didn't join the Rocket Resurgence because he knew it would fail from the start.
  • Mercury, Venus, Uranus, and Neptune were also Galactic Commanders, but they left/died. Uranus probably left because he was constantly the butt of bad jokes. Cyrus only needed his three strongest to deal with the lakes, though.
  • Cynthia went on a pokémon journey and got a pokédex from Prof. Rowan - actually, that's apparently implied canon, but. Also, she's 27 around the events of Platinum (to match Cyrus) and probably started at the age of around 11-14, and if she became Champion a year or two later, she's been undefeated for at least a decade.
  • Cynthia has met and had conflict with Cyrus over his views a few times, but they never knew each other well.
  • I like thinking that Cynthia's a jerk who just stood by with her lv 62 garchomp while Dawn had to face Cyrus alone, possibly with a mental justification that this'll help Dawn's personal growth and let Dawn achieve her full potential... but more likely than not, Dawn just stepped forward in the middle of the conversation and challenged Cyrus to a battle. Dawn can still feel betrayed about this, because she didn't realise Cynthia was Champion, and Cynthia still could have done something, but it's a little more positive this way.
  • The reason neither Burgh nor Elesa have joltik on their teams is because they couldn't bear seeing a joltik get hurt. They're too adorable.
  • Clearly, something happened post-Platinum so that Lucas/Dawn hasn't battled Cynthia for a while. ("When was the last time I was driven into a corner like this?" - assuming that she only actually says that in the first battle and the game designers just didn't change it, because otherwise, the answer is almost always "Yesterday.") Cynthia also refers to the Platinum protagonist as "that Trainer who faced Giratina" (when "thinking out loud" rather than really trying to tell the protagonist something), and while it shows she clearly remembers the event well, it seems rather impersonal.
  • When Alder asked the BW protagonist if s/he would be willing to take on his/her duty, he already suspected that would have to come to pass. He was trying to mitigate his guilt - as well as test the new hero - but at that point, he perhaps expected to lose. But after Hilbert/Hilda accepted his/her duty, he made a vow not to lose to N, perhaps because his guilt only increased. That's why he's so devastated when he loses.
  • N's klink (in Chargestone Cave) followed him after he released it, and rejoined his team as a klinklang for the final battle.
  • The scientist in the P2 Laboratory (Dudley, apparently) is making drives for every element but normal, as a counterpart to Arceus's plates. He only completed four so far, and since he's got no funding, it's difficult to manage the rest.

The World:

  • May be obvious to some, but Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh take place in the Pokémon world's version of Japan - as well as the regions of any spinoff that can reasonably share the canon, even Orre. Unova takes place in America.
  • Everywhere on Earth, in the Pokémon world, is similarly altered, as each has its own pokémon (indigenous and introduced). Not all countries are modernised enough to have multiple "regions", each with its own Pokémon League (and some have no Leagues at all), but they're all different because of pokémon.
  • In Poképan, at least, there's no real order of gyms, where you're expected to complete the gyms in a certain order. It's just that the gym leaders fight at different levels depending on how strong you're expected to be according to your badges. Due to Giovanni (and later Blue), Kanto deviated from that model.
  • In Unova, the gym "circuit" is linear, and the leaders have only one gym team. However, they all do have a "main" team of postgame rematch-worthy pokémon, like all leaders, which they use when they have to, say, fight six Plasma sages.
  • The usual starter pokémon for Unovan trainers are panpour, pansage, and pansear. It's probably the only way Striaton can really work, and it allows people to wave the equality flag.
  • The reason eastern Unova is full of crazy-strong wild pokémon and trainers is that there are no gyms there. They closed it off before the protagonist reaches Nimbasa because tons of Japanese pokémon escaped the Poké Transfer Lab and took over the whole thing, and even now, only the strongest trainers dare venture through those gates. Closer to the south, the pokémon are largely staying east of Marvelous Bridge (perhaps due to the swanna), but they've managed to cross Village Bridge and are encroaching on Opelucid.

Some of the ways I justify the version differences don't ... actually work out with canon, but:

RGBY/FRLG

  • Red, Leaf, and Blue all start their journeys at the same time, taking all of the starters.
  • Red catches a pikachu early in his journey, and he develops a great respect for the species.
  • The slight differences between how Blue acts in the first and third generations are really how he interacts with Red and Leaf.
  • Red and Leaf both work together to take down Team Rocket, though not always because they're coordinated. Team Rocket just happens to get in the way a lot, is all. Blue mostly ignores it, being more interested in beating them both, even if he has to wait until they're tired to do so.
  • Blue is the only one really trying to fill the pokédex. Red clearly hasn't captured anything himself other than that pikachu and snorlax, since his team otherwise consists of gift pokémon. Leaf probably does the more rational thing of just catching pokémon she might use on her team.
  • Leaf got the fossil from Mt. Moon, and the hitmon* Red doesn't choose.
  • Blue becomes Champion first, and Red beats him very soon afterwards. Red refuses to stay in the League like Blue does, but he finds himself becoming bored with exploring Kanto, as there's nothing to do. He eventually resorts to continuously going through the Pokémon League.
  • Leaf has even odds of beating Red in any given battle, but since she never does it at the Indigo League, doing so doesn't mean she earns the Champion status.
  • Leaf does pretty much all of the Sevii Islands plot on her own. She becomes friends with Lorelei, and gives her a plushie every time Red beats the E5 25 times. After Red's 200th time, though, Leaf just tells him he's being ridiculous, and Blue soon gets sick of it and decides to fill in the empty position of Viridian Gym Leader instead.
  • Agatha retires when Blue leaves, disappointed that Prof. Oak's grandson didn't become as great as expected (even if it's only because there just happened to be someone better), and Lorelei returns to watch over the Sevii Islands.
  • Before Red holes himself up in Mt. Silver, Leaf and Blue give him their starters.
  • Missingno. et al never existed, but Red sometimes has nightmares about them.

GSC/HGSS

  • Kris somewhat follows Crystal, and her journey takes place at least a year before Ethan and Lyra's. Mostly, she experiences the events that changed for HGSS.
    • Without a pseudo-rival to teach her, Kris learns to catch pokémon from a Dude.
    • Team Rocket isn't making its comeback yet, and Silver isn't involved. There's a small but pathetic attempt at a resurgence (with unnamed admins), which could probably be quashed even without her help, though she takes them down when she sees them. Her journey's a more-or-less standard one, for the most part.
    • She is involved pretty much solely with Suicune, but not the tower duo. She obtains the clear bell for this, though she eventually gives it to the Kimono Girls.
    • For that matter, she fights the Kimono Girls before obtaining HM03 Surf. They aren't that strong at this point.
    • She encounters Eusine multiple times, of course.
    • When she encounters Blaine, he is a lonely gym leader in a tiny cave. Blue's gym is still straightforward and empty of traps and trainers. Afterwards, the two renovate their gyms and get gym trainers.
    • Red is weaker when Kris battles him him, symbolised by his levels being lower in GSC than HGSS. He also uses an espeon. Red isn't at the mountain peak for this battle, so it's not hailing the whole time.
    • Since the GS Ball event was still programmed into Crystal, I get to say Kris acquires it and catches Celebi.
    • There is An Event that is Very Bad. Due to this, her younger relative/friend, Lyra, loses interest in becoming a pokémon master.
  • Ethan mostly followed Gold/HeartGold, without the Suicune parts, as Kris already covered that.
    • Professor Elm only has two starters left at this point, and Ethan takes the one with an advantage over Kris. Silver then takes the last starter.
    • Ethan gets the togepi egg, and as far as the Kimono Girls are concerned, this marks him for further investigation.
    • As he goes through his journey, he encounters bits of the Rocket Resurgence along the way, and he beats them down until he finally finishes them in the Goldenrod Radio Tower.
    • Celebi, previously captured by Kris, makes its way into his team so he can stop Giovanni.
  • Lyra acts as Ethan's pseudo-rival, but she follows some events of Silver/Soulsilver. Mostly the ones Ethan doesn't.
    • She loves pokémon and enjoys training, but she resolves not to take the gym challenge because of Kris.
    • She's the granddaughter of the daycare couple.
    • She's got a lot of marill, and gets excited every single time one evolves... only to replace it with another marill.
    • She acquires the pikachu-coloured pichu at some point, then goes to the Ilex Forest shrine to get the spiky-eared pichu.
    • She obtains the Silver Wing from some old guy in Pewter City when she's visiting.
    • Eventually, the Kimono Girls ask her to do all that stuff with Lugia at the Whirl Islands, and she does. Despite only using two pichu, a raticate, and a marill, she still manages it.
    • Lyra encounters Suicune at Route 25, and she makes a point to defeat rather than capture it. She doesn't want to be another Kris.
  • The Pokéathlon and Baoba's Safari Zone come to Johto after Kris already finished her journey, Pal Park opens in Fuchsia, and Voltorb Flip becomes the main attraction of the game corners. Cerulean Cave reopened since then, too.
  • Red's pikachu knows volt tackle in HGSS, and can only learn this by breeding. Clearly, he had to replace his pikachu since Kris fought him. His first pikachu and his espeon may have simply retired, though; they needn't have died.
  • Red probably only realised he ought to diversify his team's movesets after battling Kris. He may not be overly skilled or knowledgeable about battling, and instead became Champion through dedication and hard work.

There's no real reason that Kris has to be considered a separate character from Lyra while Gold is the same as Ethan, other than character design. But it's rather convenient.

RSE

I may have to edit my headcanon if RSEmakes happen, and I don't have much RSE headcanon anyway. But. Eh.

  • Emerald is the canon 'verse, and May is the canon protagonist, if only because Brendan seems to get more characterisation as the pseudo-rival.
  • But the information from Ruby and Sapphire, that the Blue Orb controls Kyogre and the Red Orb can control Groudon, is not untrue. But the legend got messed up along the way, possibly deliberately. Even if it seems counter-intuitive, it's easy to justify it as balancing out the other's power - or else it may simply be that one orb awakens each legendary, and the same-colour orb can actually calm/control them.
  • Wallace doesn't get all that much respect as the Champion, because while he legitimately earned the title, even if he beat Steven, he's still easier to beat, himself.

DPPt

Platinum is canon, of course, but some minor events of DP can still make it in!

  • Once, before Lucas became Prof. Rowan's research assistant, he watched The Search for the Red Gyarados and decided he wanted to catch his father's boss a legendary pokémon. It didn't really work out, and he had to use one of Prof. Rowan's pokémon to defend himself from a starly attack. He was recruited to work for Prof. Rowan after this event, though Prof. Rowan ends up leaving Sinnoh for four years anyway.
  • Lucas doesn't really train during this time, though, since he's decided he's going to become a researcher. It's not until he sees how Prof. Rowan approves of Dawn challenging gyms that he wonders if, maybe, he could have done that too.
  • The gyms and Galactic buildings that changed have just been recently renovated. Everyone protested changing the gyms - Eterna became more boring (even though people were complaining about not being able to find the gym trainers), Veilstone made it harder for the wimpy trainers, and Hearthome became terrifying.
  • The first version of the Pokétch indeed had only one button. Not six months later, they release a far more convenient version, which they probably had ready by the first's launch.
  • Lucas receives a happiny egg from some guy in Hearthome, which is why Dawn never gets her hands on it.
  • That time in Platinum, when Cynthia tells you to go to Celestic Town and then appears about ten seconds after the ruins were almost destroyed? Was her meeting you after you beat Fantina, in DP. Because that makes far more sense, I'm stubbornly keeping it >:| (Also, "You're not very easy to track down." It's funny.)
  • Cyrus attempts to summon Dialga at Spear Pillar, but is foiled by the lake trio, which Dawn had freed. He vows to try again ("But I will not give up. I will become a deity one day... And I will make the ultimate mine..."), and he does, thus kicking off the climax of Platinum. Dawn has the climb the damn mountain twice.
  • In between these events, Cyrus probably went to Celestic Town personally to examine the ruins, and to learn that he just has to get Dialga and Palkia together.

BW

This is more of a temporary thing since the third version hasn't come out yet, but:

  • This is pretty much the only time I'm saying alternate universes, where both events happened, exist. Mainly because it's practically canon.
  • The point of divergence is, well, really early in the history of Unova. It affected the development of Mistralton and Opelucid, and the area that would become White Forest/Black City, and, much earlier, which dragon ended up in Dragonspiral Tower. The point of divergence, naturally, is which side "won" the battle between truth and ideals - though, really, they felt that neither won, due to the whole destroying Unova thing. As such, it didn't affect nearly as much as it should - even the same people exist in both universes, with more or less the same lives.
    • The main event affecting the protagonist is that in Black's universe, Hilbert's the one living in Nuvema. In White, it's Hilda. Their journeys aren't identical, but every plot-important event is the same.
    • One of them says "No" to everything N asks, has to be pressured by Alder to accept his/her position as a fallback hero, and tells Prof. Juniper that s/he regrets going on a pokémon journey. I've decided to make that person Hilbert, the hero of truth, though it could really work for either. Hilda is a lot more accepting of her duty.
    • Unfortunately for her, this means Hilda also ended up agreeing to Cynthia's request for a battle the first time they met.
  • Hilbert and Hilda never knew each other before meeting in the Battle Subway.
  • They meet over the Entralink, sometimes.
  • Hilbert's a descendent of the older twin, and Hilda's a descendent of the younger. They're too distant from each other to normally be considered related, though.
  • N is a descendent of both twins, ultimately, possibly not even by Ghetsis's design.
  • Whichever trainer isn't the hero of his/her respective world is clearly far more experienced and stronger, as shown by the pokémon he/she has. It may be some consolation for not becoming the hero of that universe.
  • Alright, so I don't really believe that a new universe/reality is supposed to form every time there's a possible point of divergence, even in the Pokémon world, so maybe it's a localised anomaly affecting Unova, linked to each other through an island in its centre.
    • It's got something to do with that Game Freak building and Morimoto.

Uh, there are more. But I forgot them. So I'll leave you with these walls of text.

Professor Oak was a trainer in his youth, and Agatha was his rival. Agatha became champion but quickly lost to Oak, just like what happened with Blue in the first generation games.

Agatha was also a LOT like Silver in her youth. She does care about her Pokemon as an adult, even if she still works them into the ground.

Part of her resentment towards Oak is that she doesn't want to have lost to someone who later went "soft".

I would not be surprised if the other Galactic commanders died. :/ Galactic tends to mess around with things they shouldn't.

Okay here's kind of a weird one.

Lance's Garchomp he uses in the rematch is the son of Cynthia's Garchomp. Cynthia has a female Garchomp, and Lance has a Dragonite that knows Outrage. That Garchomp he uses in the rematch knows Outrage, which is an Egg Move for Gibles.

Lance, having access to the Dragon's Den and all, was given "custody" of the resulting Gible, but Cynthia visits as much as she can.

Also, not so much headcanon as outright canon, but I've seen it turn up a lot in fics: Rusty is NOT Jasmine's main Steelix.

Rusty is very clearly a boy; the Steelix she uses to fight with in HGSS is female. Even in the rematches.

Psychic-type weaknesses are based of common fears. Nothing Interferes with mind more than fear. That is fear of bugs, fear of dark, and fear of ghosts.
