I am currently researching more about various forum scripts and their advantages and disadvantages. I thought you could help me more by sharing your knowledge. If you have tried out any forum script, can you please list it’s advantages and disadvantages. You can post how much ever you like and even if other users have already posted similar advantages/ disadvantages. Here is my review on these scripts as far as what I have tried.

vBulletin

Advantages
1) Best Features without installing mods
2) Excellent Mods
3) Clean Programming
4) Great Default Layout
5) Amazingly Easy to make new layouts without HTML knowledge
6) Elite Admin CP
7) Very easy to use – even for a newbie

Disadvantages
1) Paid – Very Expensive
2) Not much small mods
3) No free Themes available at site
4) Slightly takes more system resources than other scripts
5) Log out almost never works

phpBB

Advantages
1) Free Script + Open Source
2) Lots of Good Mods & Layouts available for FREE
3) Great Admin Control Panel and easy to administrate
4) Easy In-Line Moderation
5) Easy to make your own mods if you have PHP knowledge.
6) Very Fast Queries

Disadvantages
1) Too many mods. Default download has too less features and you need a mod for everything.
2) Bad default style
3) Logging Out Problem
4) No WYSIWYG Editor
5) Tough to make layouts of your own
6) Bad Memberlist, tough to search for a particular user
7) No Forum leaders
8) More security loopholes

SMF

Advantages
1) Free
2) Nice Features
3) Unique Name
4) Fast
5) Easy to install mods


Disadvantages
1) Bad default layout
2) Lame AdminCP
3) Not easy to make self-themes
4) Less mods available

MyBB

Advantages
1) Free
2) Okay, Look – Default Layout
3) Nice User Panel

Disadvantages
1) Not as fast as other systems
2) Not much free mods and layouts available
3) So-So Admin Panel

IceBB

Advantages
1) Free+GNU License
2) Very nice Basic Layout
3) Good Features
4) Unique PM’ing system
5) Really fast
6) Easy to Make layouts

Disadvantages
1) New Script – too many security problems
2) No Mods & Free Layouts
3) No proper domain for the site
4) Admins not replying very eagerly to all support problems and suggestions
5) Coding too similar to IPB

Not yet Tried :: IPB, Zero Forum, Burning Forum, YaBB, Proboards, etc.

What you see above are just some of my own personal opinions. Please share your experiences with me by stating out the advantages and disadvantages of each forum script. Oh! Let it not sound too bash-ish.

Someone might want to try out XMB if it's still around... *is* it?
 
IPB
Advantages:
1) Better license agreement makes it cheaper than vB.
2) Nice default theme.
3) Lots of free themes out there.
4) Powerful admin CP.
5) A lot more features coming in next version.

Disadvantages:
1) Not many useful mods.
2) No admin permissions as of now.
3) No WYSIWYG editor as of now.
4) Support is meh.
5) Fairly hard to skin.

Am I the *only* one that can't stand WYSIWYG editors on forums?

IceBB disadvantage = admincp - very hard to understand the first time

MyBB has a nice admin panel...

It is. I might just go and download a copy just to try it out. And thanks for those points Rob, JK. Please keep posting more as you remember them.

if you want to download them got to their main site.
 
On the left navbar, click on Forums, then a list should appear. You don't download them, they're just live demos... <_<
 
I seem to remember TDW used to use XMB, that's why I mentioned it... haven't seen it used elsewhere though.

Well...if I could get a quick reply hack for it, XMB would be awesome =D

What do people think of BurningBoard Lite? Worth using?
 
Danny used it for a while, and I absolutely hated it...
 
Burning Board Lite- the admin CP is...different...in a not good sort of way. =/
BBL lacks features like attachments, etc., but I love the default skin. <3
Better than phpBB, though.
 
yeah, and to get the good features you must buy the 2.2.3 version.
which cost less than vb or ipb.
 
I seriously think BB is as good as SMF. *Ducks as Rotten Eggs come on Stage*

Actually, for free, BBL's not that bad. Just wish it had attachments. =/
And nothing is as good as SMF for free. myBB is close, but not there yet. XD
