Oh I hope you're still around, as you did post this a while ago. Sorry if you had to wait.

One question first, are you hooking this up to a cable modem, or do you plan to use it as a hub to connect to the rest of the computer in your house?
[of course you can do both as well]

More important questions
How many cables do you have, and more importantly, how many devices do you plan to hook up to your router? [explained below if you're not sure]

Also, does your computer have an ethernet port on it? It should look like a phone jack, but slightly larger.

Depending on what's connecting to it, you're going to need a few Ethernet cables.
[any CAT5 type of cable should do like mine here: ]

I'm assuming you already have one cable, as most routers come with one cable already. This cable is a CAT5 ethernet cable [though there are different rated CAT5s, you don't need to worry about this too much.]

I asked what you are using this for because you may need a different number of cables depending on how many computers you plan to connect to the router.

But lets say for instance, you have one computer and you want to connect to a cable modem.

What you would need to do is hook the modem up.
[most modems have a really simple interface. Plug them in and turn them on and they'll do the rest.]

Plug in the Ethernet Cable to the port on the modem.
This port should look like a slightly larger phone jack. You'll also know you're in the slot when you hear your cable make a nice little 'click.'

Now the other end of the cord should plug into the router. There is a specific spot on most routers for the correct input from the modem. This jack is usually seperate from the rest.
You'll basically see []-[][][][]
Plug it into the one ^ that's by itself.

The other four jacks have a hub function. If you decide to run a network, you can use these jacks to connect to other computers. For your sake, use one of these [any one will do] as the port that will connect to your computer.

You will need another ethernet cable.

This one will connect to any port of your choosing.
The ports may have little numbers on them, that's fine, it doesn't matter which number they're in.

[x]-[o][o][o][o]
Use any port with a 'o'

[this is just for my diagram purposes, the router DOESN'T have little x's and o's] and plug the ethernet cable in here.

Plug the other end of the Ethernet Cable to your computer's Ethernet Network Port. If you don't have one, this may be a problem. Most older computers don't have pre-built ethernet ports as they weren't so common a decade ago.

Don't fret, you can still hook it up, if you buy a NIC [Network Interface Card] for your computer which has the ethernet port you'll need on it.

If you can relay me those few details to some of the questions, I'll be glad to continue, but this is basically the first step in setting up the router.

Ask anything you'd like, I don't bite lol.

Again sorry if it took so long for a response.
