Help with IVs?

So I've been trying and trying to breed a Feebas worthy of training and its hardcore evolution...but I don't know how to measure its IVs. I've learned how to EV train and breed and all that...and I finally got a Calm Feebas with Haze, which I wanted.

I've used this calculator:
http://pokemon.marriland.com/statcalc_dp.php

But I'm still not sure what exactly an IV is...and I can't find a truly comprehensive explanation...anywhere.

Help? Anyone?

An IV is an Individual Value. There are a max of 31 IVs in each stat, and they affect both the stat itself and what hidden power it uses. The lower the IVs of a stat are, the lower the stat is. They are like EVs, because they affect how high a stat is, but no matter what you, you can't change its IVs(unless you use an AR). They are sort of born into a pokemon, so you have to keep breeding or catching pokemon to get just the right IVs for hidden power or getting the right stats. Thats all I know about 'em.

God, I swear I liked the game more when every pokemon was pretty much the same.....*head explodes*

They were never the same. IVs existed even in R/B/Y, but they were called DVs at the time.

You can also breed IVs to pokemon to make it easier. How do you do this? Let's say you have a 31 Attack IV Bagon in the day care. There is a 1/4 chance that your hatched poke will have 31 attack IV. IV breeding is extremely useful and it has gotten me my favorite pokes such as Starmie with max sp attack and speed and salamence with max attack :) .

The way I got the Starmie with both max sp attack and speed IV is by chain IV breeding. Chain IV breeding is when you pass a 31 IV stat to a poke, and then place that poke in the day care again to pass the baby another 31 IV stat. This can be very time consuming, usually around 30 eggs, but in the end it's worth it.

Because of this I own different nature ditto with 31 IV in different stats.

This is where I learned to do this:

Is there a way to tell what a Pokemon's IV is? Is this that all the stats say 6 next to them when it is born or something?

I use metalkid.info personally.. it's more acurate since it allows you to enter lines of your pokemons stats by level so it'll be easier to find it's true IVs.. No, that's not it, since some pokes can also have 7 when born, IV's are hidden, you can't really tell unless you use a calculator

Additionally, you know the thing where it says "highly curious", "can take hits", etc below the nature? Those give you hints as to what your pokemon's highest IV is.. when you see a gible that says "like to thrash about"... it has great potential :smokin:

As a more quantitative way of looking at it, an IV of a pokemon tells how many extra stat points that pokemon will have in that stat by the time it gets to lv. 100 (not counting EVs, base stats, or natures). So say you had a Pokemon with an IV of 25 in speed. That would mean that, by the time it reached level 100, it would have an extra 25 speed points in its stats, in addition to its base stats, whatever affecting nature it has, and its EV points. The higher the IVs, the better, because they do make a difference. ;)

is there some way to notice the IV when the pokemon is at level 1?

a) Look at the sub-nature. Things like alert to sounds, mischievous, highly curious, likes to thrash about, usually indicate a 31 IV stat. Notice I said usually. I know this because every time I calculate IVs for a poke and it's 31, it usually has a sub nature saying this

b) The surer route, have about 19 rare candies ready. Save.

Using http://metalkid.info 's IV calculator, select your pokemon and its nature, and note down the exact stats for level 1. Each time you give it a rare candy, put down those stats in the calculator. If you need more lines theres an option at the top. Once you fill it all the way til level 20, click calculate and there should be an almost exact calculation of your IV. Some times you'll get a perfect calculations. Other times you'll see a range such as 29-31. In this case, you would need more rare candies if you want to see if it'll be 31, or you can keep it and it could still turn out to be 31 but with the possibilities of it being 29 or 30
