My vision for Bulbagarden in a few concise points.

  • Bulbagarden needs a main page. That is my number one priority, first and foremost.
  • We need to work on consolidating the forums to make them more focused and less cumbersome without truncating debate on topics of importance.
  • The management structure needs to be established, with one able person at the top of the chain who is answered to. This is not a committee thing.
  • We need to drop the idea that we're a democracy, because we're not. As I've stated before, this thing has been run as a poorly-managed business; I suggest we change that and make it an efficient business following the small-business model.
  • Bulbagarden needs rational goals for all of its individual arms to meet, and if those arms need assistance, resources should be delegated to meet the goals within a reasonable timeframe.

Baby steps. All of our faults so far have come because our visions have been grand and we haven't been able to match them with action. If we can knock out every one of those five points, I'll start picking up some steam with my ambition. For now, I'm guarded.

I completely agree. As far as consolidating the forums goes, I'd say that merging Mind Games, Party Games and Clubs would be a good idea (someone else already brought this up).

Basically, we delegate out responsibility to people on various tasks. They handle their projects and report back to a central leader, but we don't have multiple layers of bureaucracy that involve going through a massive procedure to get something approved. We need a two-tier system: Top and not-top, with not-top having more than enough leeway to get most things done on their own, but enough oversight to make sure that the reasonable goals we set are being attained.

Agreed on all points.

I would like to add one to that. We need some sort of cohesive colour scheme that can be applied to all the sections of the site as the default. This does not have to be any of the existing colour schemes. Indeed, if anything, to symbolise our "rebirth", it should be a new one...or perhaps even an old unused one from the original BMG.

Speaking of which, we do still have the original code for the old front page from 2003...if that could be cleaned up, updated....it might suffice for both front page and new default colour scheme.

As I just posted in my topic, I think a compromise can finally be worked out.

Archaic - How long was the front page in use? Because if it was the one that was there when I came around, then I think it would be a great idea to bring it back again.

Otherwise, I could get working on some common look that could be modified and applied to all aspects of Bulbagarden - visual design, as I think I have demonstrated, is one of my strongest areas.

Hmm, no, I wouldn't have seen it then, given that I arrived here in 2004. Any chance I could see a screenshot or something along those lines?

And I still have little doubt it'd be better than what we have now.

That's what it looked like on the original site. Imagine that, without the right hand bar, with collapsible menu's for the left hand bar (as in, click on it and it expands, with your personal prefs for the menu's saved in cookies), and with everything else updated for the modern Bulbagarden. The news headlines would remain (just be a limited feed from BN), but the content below that would just be Bulbagarden updates.

As far as what the menu items would link to...the relevant categories or pages on 'pedia.

... I like it. It's a look that works for all of Bulbagarden. I'm all for implementing it with the modifications listed - though I'd also think that the topmost banner should be modified at least a little, since someone mentioned a point that I agree with, that we need to at least have some common logo for Bulbagarden, and I like the bulb symbol used on the wikis. If you want, I'll even get cracking on a new forums skin to go along with it - not to pad my own ego, but those are never hard for me to get together - as well as some buttons and smilies because I don't think anyone's attached to the vB defaults.

Alternately, I could get cracking on a modified design that uses the same layout but change the colors to match Bulbagarden Neoclassic, which is Bulbagarden's best known skin. I did a great job motivating myself, if no one else, and now I've got a lot of energy to burn.

I agree. We could also start work on an online game type thing like Pokequest. That would bring in popularity.

Well, since I got back today, I've been catching up on things that happened while I was away and I have to say I agree with everything Evan says here. Plus, the Main Page, Oekaki, Gallery, BulbaNews and Bulbapedia need an unified color scheme.

This is maybe the 4th time I post this, but I'll do it again. A sample of a few colour schemes we could use, since Archaic already said is not obligatory to use the classic BMG colours.

There's not much point in giving us colour palettes - colour schemes mean you take the palette you have created and paint the page using those colours.

Personally, if we're going for a new base look entirely, I'm partial to the Bulbagarden Spring colors - I'm using the skin right now in the middle of winter, even though I think I could probably do a better job with that banner right now.
