Everyone is fighting over the main character's names from the games, and i totally know what you all mean. All the points from both sides are valid in their own ways.
However, i think we should look at this from Nintendo's perspective. They probably weren't thinking about keeping the names consistent because its your own choice to name the character what you want. Even email them and ask the character's names. They tell you the name is whatever you want it to be.
So everyone is referring to the new HG SS version of Gold as... well, Gold. BUT in the screenshots, to go with the new game, Nintendo chooses to refer to him as Soul. Why? Because to them, he name is insignificant and they picked the manlier of "Heart" and "Soul".
And for the new (or possibly old) female player character, they call her "Heart" in the screenshots because it sounds girlier. Like in the screenshots for Animal Crossing, the name of the character is something generic like that... i forget, but it wasn't like, a real name, you know what i mean?
The only actual name a player character has is "Red" because you find him as an NPC in GSC. In which, as a player character, he has no name, but as an NPC, he does.
The point i'm trying to make is that we keep fighting over what names the characters have, when in reality, it's whatever we want them to be. But if we choose to give them the names the creators gave them while playing, it's safe to say Gold is Gold in GSC, Kris is Kris in GSC, Gold is Soul in HGSS, and Kris/Soul is actually Heart in HGSS.
I honestly don't know where the name "Soul" for the girl came from... everyone relates it to "Leaf" but how is that relevant when she's called Heart in screenshots and Gold is called Soul in screenshots? Very confusing if you ask me. Probably should have went with the screenshots rather than speculation based on an irrelevant game. ._.
But that's my input. Feel free to agree or disagree. I just think the entire debate is silly, because the character dont have names preset, just names Nintendo chose while playing, or suggests in-game as inside jokes for staff...
EDIT: I'll add some evidence to support my claims.

Edit2: Here is someone playing the demo on a DS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WbodqMuNjA&feature=PlayList&p=E209117910134AB1&index=67 Every spot for a name, her name is "Haato" aka Heart.
Edit3: To be honest... anyone have an idea on what Silver's name will be in HGSS? Because the only screenshot so far as him called something like the guy who stalked you or something. XD No name chosen. Any ideas on what it will be? Or think it will stay as Silver?
EDIT: Heart was an example name used in demos, and her name is now confirmed Kotone. So arguement's over! I wasn't right, but neither was most people. XD Good job people who thought she was Kotone!
