Everyone is fighting over the main character's names from the games, and i totally know what you all mean. All the points from both sides are valid in their own ways.

However, i think we should look at this from Nintendo's perspective. They probably weren't thinking about keeping the names consistent because its your own choice to name the character what you want. Even email them and ask the character's names. They tell you the name is whatever you want it to be.

So everyone is referring to the new HG SS version of Gold as... well, Gold. BUT in the screenshots, to go with the new game, Nintendo chooses to refer to him as Soul. Why? Because to them, he name is insignificant and they picked the manlier of "Heart" and "Soul".

And for the new (or possibly old) female player character, they call her "Heart" in the screenshots because it sounds girlier. Like in the screenshots for Animal Crossing, the name of the character is something generic like that... i forget, but it wasn't like, a real name, you know what i mean?

The only actual name a player character has is "Red" because you find him as an NPC in GSC. In which, as a player character, he has no name, but as an NPC, he does.

The point i'm trying to make is that we keep fighting over what names the characters have, when in reality, it's whatever we want them to be. But if we choose to give them the names the creators gave them while playing, it's safe to say Gold is Gold in GSC, Kris is Kris in GSC, Gold is Soul in HGSS, and Kris/Soul is actually Heart in HGSS.

I honestly don't know where the name "Soul" for the girl came from... everyone relates it to "Leaf" but how is that relevant when she's called Heart in screenshots and Gold is called Soul in screenshots? Very confusing if you ask me. Probably should have went with the screenshots rather than speculation based on an irrelevant game. ._.

But that's my input. Feel free to agree or disagree. I just think the entire debate is silly, because the character dont have names preset, just names Nintendo chose while playing, or suggests in-game as inside jokes for staff...

EDIT: I'll add some evidence to support my claims. :)

http://www.pokemon-world.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/HGSS25.jpg Another one where he's called Soul.

Edit2: Here is someone playing the demo on a DS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WbodqMuNjA&feature=PlayList&p=E209117910134AB1&index=67 Every spot for a name, her name is "Haato" aka Heart.

Edit3: To be honest... anyone have an idea on what Silver's name will be in HGSS? Because the only screenshot so far as him called something like the guy who stalked you or something. XD No name chosen. Any ideas on what it will be? Or think it will stay as Silver?

EDIT: Heart was an example name used in demos, and her name is now confirmed Kotone. So arguement's over! I wasn't right, but neither was most people. XD Good job people who thought she was Kotone! :D

Well, there's a few things wrong with this.

1. The screenshots come from Soul Silver, so the names are swapped.Soul is actually not Gold's name.
2. I don't recall a single shot that calls her heart.
3. People care because when the other character takes up an NPC stance, they have to have a name.
4. And Soul follows the pattern from FRLG

And Gold is his old canon name and chances are fans still want to call him that.

Gold never had any "official" name in the games. Gold was just the most default option of his default names, it also fit with then naming scheme. Now, with the version-naming scheme being obsolete, they had to make up new names for the Johto main characters. Why didn't they use the names from the anime? I don't know. It's possible that they didn't know of them at all. Of course, everyone would prefer them to use the anime names, as it would officially deny/confirm that Kotone(?) is Kris theory.

The name "Soul" for the girl arised from a stupid fanassumption. It has no meaning, in fact. Her version name is Heart and his "real" name will probably be Kotone [this is the name listed on the anime program scan, it's still unknown if that pertains to her] (while Gold's will probably be Hibiki. The two fit well together, as they're both related to sound).

One name isn't a "pattern".

Pretty much every screen that shows female player's name. Boy is always called Soul (except on Nintendo website screenshots, where he's called Ninten).

And said screens are where, exactly?

And yes, I know once isn't a pattern, but everyone's using that system as a reference.

1. Every screenshot i've seen calls him Soul. O_O What world are you from? http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/b/b2/Elmslab.png "Utsugi: Souru-kun kitekureru no mattetandayo!"
2. Find a dialouge that refers to her by name. It says "Haato" aka Heart. When i find that youtube vid again, i'll link it.
3. Exactly? o_O Not sure what you're saying here.
4. No, she doesn't. XD Thats my point.

Again, the canon names are reversed since the game the shots are taken from is Soul Silver.

And here's the thing. The character you aren't playing as becomes like May/Brendan or Lucas/Dawn. An NPC with a name. That's why people care about the names. Because they ARE going to have canon ones.

I missed that one...

Okay, well, you win that round.

It still bugs me how every english screenshot calls her Soul... even though in the screenshot itself it says Heart! I think it'd be best if everyone could read Japanese like me. Then they wouldnt have made this mistake XD

A lot of people here CAN read Japanese, though I often refer to Pokebeache's Yaminokame.

To be honest, neither "Heart" or "Soul" are that manly. Which is why I call Gold, Gold.

And if it turns out that if the other player character (like Lucas or Dawn) becomes part of the story, and the female is named Heart, then remember that Bulbapedia is a wiki.

Oh yeah, because you see her outside the Lab in some screenshots! So maybe she will become important, and we'll see her name really is Heart. n.n You just got my hopes up for the bulbapedia wiki to actually stop failing. <333

In this case, Bulbapedia is not a reliable reference, simply because the people editing it and adding its content are fans, and therefore creates a circular argument.

If you wanted to, you could go and edit in everything you've pointed out in this thread.

I still don't see why this name stuff is soo important. It only matters when the games have a continuous character like Red.

Actually, as I remember, we've never really fought over names. We've fought (I'd prefer the word "discuss", but honestly, most of us have been just ranting on that thread, so I call it a fight) over identities and character roels, which is a bit deeper than a mere naming issue. Yet d.aisuke has a point. It has no relevance to the overall canon since no character apart from Red has an appearance outside their debut game.

I was told before the girsl name was Heart, not soul and Soul was the boy, can't remember where though, but there was more than one source I found that

Yes why are people still calling the HGSS girl 'Soul' when she has been shown with the name 'Heart' as a placeholder. I am not saying that it is her canon name, but still calling her 'Soul' is erroeous and causing confusion. At least she has be referred to as 'Heart'.

They protected her page and basically left the message "Her name is Soul get over it" in the discussion and protected that too. :/ Whenever i try and show them its NOT Soul, they say "TAKE IT TO THE FORUMS" so i did. :3

Exactly my point. I'm tired of people calling her Soul. It wouldn't be as bad if there wasn't already someone else named Soul in the game... makes everything so confusing!

Her name's Soul. Do you want us to move the page a hundred times for every minor hint? She could be at Miki and Gold at Hiroki, sure. Then Red and Green go to Ash and Gary. Oh hey, that's not their names. PKMN TRAINER RED would like to battle! Remember?

Soul's staying at Soul until we've had a chance to hack apart the games' code. Like Leaf we'll probably find her name in there. After all, the sprites are saved as images, and since FRLG and E identify Red and Leaf as Red and Leaf, as well as Brendan and May as Brendan and May, we can just look forward to the release for the name she's gonna get.

Heck, maybe, if you guys haven't thought of it before, she has the name "Heart" in the demo because you can choose to name her in the final game, like you choose the name of the rival in RGBY/GSC/FRLG/DPPt. It'd make up for Brendan/May and Wally having a default name.

o_o No need to get all mad, Echidna. XD We can wait to change the page until the game tells us she's Heart. It's fine.

I just think it's gonna be a bit misleading for awhile because her name will be Soul, which is the male player character's name in all the demos. It's just a little confusing.
