hello bulbagarden forum users ! my name is leo and like all of you i very much enjoy pokémon!

perhaps unusually for a pokémon fan, i had next to no interaction with it as a kid - knew hardly anything about it, never saw the anime, and hadn’t ever touched a pokémon game until i picked up a secondhand copy of pokémon moon aged 20.

since that first playthrough i’ve fallen in love with the games and i’m gradually trying to play more of them. currently revisiting alola with sun to complete my moon pokédex but also really excited to discover kalos in z-a next month…

i’ve also been following the competitive vgc scene since this january or so and i think it's fascinating (and if anyone can point me to somewhere people talk about that here i’d really appreciate it!). i’ve never played myself as i haven’t had access to the mons i would need, but i’m also playing through the violet dlc at the moment so i’m hoping to change that soon!

as far as I’m aware I don’t know anyone irl who likes pokémon so i’m really looking forward to being able to talk about it with people here. i don’t have a lot of experience with forums but the more gentle pace really appeals, and i’m also super interested to learn about all the different corners of the franchise! i feel like there’s so many things about pokémon that i’m only just starting to find out about and that’s really cool to me :bulbaLove:

(p.s. i’d love to hear from anyone else who maybe had a later start with pokémon or came to it via a different route than it seems like most people do!)

Welcome to the forums! Hope you like it here.

It's interesting to see somebody who got into the franchise late, that definitely doesn't happen often! You're right that there's a lot to discover with Pokémon. As long as you wanna learn more, you'll find more to learn, haha

Hey! Welcome. Sorry I can’t help you with the late start to the franchise thing (I played my first game at seven), but age doesn’t matter here. Pokémon fans are Pokémon fans, and I hope you enjoy the forums.

Hello there! Welcome to to the forums. Assuming by your username + profile picture, I'll assume your favourite type is Psychic?

Welcome to bulbagarden! I like your Chimecho profile picture, such an underrated pokemon.

welcome to the forums!! really cool to get someone else interested in VGC on these boards! i’d consider myself to be an intermediate player? i’m casual, but pretty good for a casual, i think. you’re free to strike up a conversation with me about it at any time! we technically have the Bulbagarden Battle Center for talking about competitive battling, though it’s been pretty inactive lately. please feel free to change that, i would love to engage in VGC conversation there! (also if you ever need any help acquiring pokemon or items, i hover around the Trade Station too!)

like many of the people above, i can’t help you with the getting into pokemon as an adult thing (i personally played my first pokemon game on my 5th birthday) but it’s always nice to see that the same thing that captivated us can kids can still captivate people as adults. and like, i sort of envy the backlog, you have so much to discover lol

hope to see you around! if gentle pace is what you’re looking for, you’ll enjoy it here :yay:

i really like psychic types yes! i think there's a lot of really fun designs and i like moves like trick room (hence my username) that at first glance might seem pretty useless but actually have some fun applications, and psychic types get quite a few of those lol

thank you and so true!! i think if i could have a pokemon partner in real life it would absolutely be chimecho (though of course there are other pokemon up there too...)

awesome to hear from somebody that likes vgc too, and thank you so much for the info on where to talk about it! i will definitely check out the battle center!

and yeah i think because i got into pokemon later i sometimes feel like maybe there's things i missed out on by not getting into it earlier, but like you say there's so much still to find out and so many sides of pokemon that i've barely even touched yet lol. very exciting!

Hi Leo, I'm Leo! (Couldn't help myself, its fun meeting someone with the same name) But! If that gets too confusing you're more than welcome to call me Lau :>
Anyway, welcome to the forums!
I don't know anyone who likes Pokémon IRL either, but this is a great place to connect with others!
I hope you enjoy your time here, be seeing you! :yay:

Hey there Leo! I'm Toron! Welcome to the Bulbagarden forums! Take a look around and you'll find chatrooms for almost anything. Game discussions, anime and manga discussion, shipping, art sharing, fanfiction writing, fun chat games, blogs, etc.

I started with the Alola games too, so how about that? I also take interest in some competitive formats, although I'm more into Smogon.

Based on your profile, you seem to enjoy Psychic and Fairy types. That's cool!

Hope you have fun around these parts!

Hello and welcome! That is quite the late start! Happy to have you in the fandom. Do you have any plans on checking out the older games?
yes i definitely want to check them out when i can!! still deciding where to start so would appreciate any recommendations/suggestions...

if you want a casual fun time full of whimsy in the pokemon world: my personal favorites, heartgold/soulsilver. the region is beautiful, there’s 2d pixel following pokemon, a lot of side activities/daily events, etc… the world feels very lived in!

if you want some slightly tougher battles and a more linear RPG experience: black/white presents a unique experience with only unova pokemon and is generally considered to be more difficult as far as pokemon games go. they’re the first games in the series to offer infinite use TMs and you get access to the daycare relatively early, so you are encouraged to engage in more complex teambuilding if you’d like. (black 2/white 2 also, which have more than just unova pokemon, but these are sequels so you’d need to play black/white first)

as an aside since you are into VGC, i definitely don’t recommend this as a first old gen experience, but you might want to check out the gamecube spinoffs Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness sometime because they have the unique feature of being entirely full of double battles. if you enjoyed the battles in the indigo disk DLC you’d likely enjoy colo/xd’s gameplay :bulbaLol: they are just very quirky games and use the gen 3 battle system which may be unfamiliar to you so perhaps get your feet wet somewhere else. or if that sounds super interesting to you, i can’t stop you!

you make them all sound so good... wah i love pokémon!!

i have definitely wanted to play hgss for a while but those games are . Not cheap lol. whereas black/white are more reasonable and i do love the idea of only unovan pokémon as well as more complex team building which could definitely be fun!! i've also heard the characters are really good i think?

ooh and i'd never thought of going for the spinoffs but that sounds super interesting!! i actually have yet to play indigo disk (agonising over what team to use for it lol) but i will absolutely consider those afterwards. thank you so much for being so thoughtful in your response i really appreciate it :bulbaLove:

Personally, I'd recommend checking out FireRed or LeafGreen for your first Kanto experience and Emerald for Hoenn. I'm a bit biased towards the GBA titles tho..
thank you so much for the recs!!! i have heard so many good things about emerald so that's definitely very high up on the list
