Hindi names of Pokémon to be updated based on English names to unify the Pokémon experience across multiple Indian languages

The Pokémon Company in India has announced that the unique Hindi-language names of Pokémon will be updated to be based on English names of Pokémon, to align them with Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali-language content distributed in India and provide a unified and consistent experience to all fans across India. Unique Hindi names for Pokémon were introduced with the launch of Hindi-language support for Pokémon GO on September 15th, 2023, and were derived from Hindi-root words, similar to how languages like Japanese, German, French, Korean, or Chinese, have unique names for Pokémon.

Previously, spoken media (such as the locally dubbed versions of the Pokémon animated series) had referred to Pokémon by their English names, and the scarce written media had used orthographic transcriptions of the Pokémon's English names into the Devanāgarī script. Prior to the public release of Hindi-language support for Pokémon GO, Hindi transcriptions of English Pokémon names were available in internal data, but these were replaced with new Hindi names before launch. Pokémon UNITE and Pokémon Smile, the two other applications that currently offer Hindi-language support, also used Hindi transcription of English Pokémon names at first, before switching to the new Hindi names of Pokémon. The Hindi dub of The Journey of One Dream was the first animated work to use the localized Hindi names for Pokémon, with Pokémon Horizons: The Series being the first main series season to do so. The Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali dubs continued to use the English names for Pokémon.

Now, the Hindi names of Pokémon (which are listed here) will be reverted back to be transcriptions of the English names, which will be used in the online Hindi Pokédex, Pokémon GO, Pokémon animation, and social media accounts. While Pokémon UNITE and Pokémon Smile have not been explicitly mentioned in the announcement, they can be expected to follow suit. The complete announcement can be read below:

We would like to inform you that Pokémon names are being unified across India to provide a more consistent experience to all fans. Starting September 25, 2025, Pokémon names in Hindi have been aligned with Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, based on Pokémon names in English.

As you may be aware, some of our services that offer Hindi language support, such as Pokémon GO, had adopted Hindi names for Pokémon from September 2023. The change in Pokémon names has already been implemented in the Pokédex on this website. Pokémon names on other services with Hindi language support, including Pokémon animation, Pokémon GO and Pokémon's social media accounts in India will be updated over the coming months.

We believe this change will enhance the experience for the entire Pokémon community in India, making it easier for new and long-time fans to connect with the brand and with each other.

Note: This update only affects the Hindi language version of the game.

Additionally, the Pokémon Asia Official Hindi YouTube channel has announced that the videos of the first season of Pokémon Horizons: The Series and other shorts released on the channel will be made unavailable from the end of October till the end of November. Since these releases use the Hindi Pokémon names, it is possible that the episodes will be redubbed to replace them with the English Pokémon names.
