Hello everybody! It’s me, Mari, and I’m here with some very specific thoughts.
I’m writing a PLA swap AU fic, where Cilan gets sent back in time instead of Ingo (specifically, this is a more anime centric AU, so Cilan’s character is based off his in the anime ((also also he doesn’t really have much of a character in the games)). It’s very self indulgent, seeing as Cilan has been one of my favorite characters ever since I was a little girl.
Part of this fanfiction includes Cilan gaining three new pokemon while he’s in Hisui. My current problem is that I’m having issues deciding which pokemon I specifically want to give him. I’ll list some of my top choices, my reasons, and potential negatives.
Hisuian Zorua : this is my top choice for Cilan. It’s an Unova Pokemon, though a variant, and I feel like it has a sort of irony to it. A ghost pokemon for a character that returns not quite the way he was when he left (for context, he will be missing for two years before returning to Unova). However, it’s still a sensitive Pokemon that a more sentimental character like Cilan would get along with. I think that I will be giving him this Pokemon no matter what.
Glameow: seeing as Cilan is terrified of Purrloin in the anime, I think that giving him a similar Pokemon would be comedically ironic. Additionally it’s a weird Pokemon for him to have because it is a normal type, and Cilan often references type advantages when commenting on battles (his whole gym is based around type advantages). The potential con is its color palette and its similarity to zorua- I’m an artist and with the pearl clan uniform and zorua, he’s already blending in quite a bit. I don’t really need glameow’s grayness to add to that. Also, giving him another small gray pokemon that’s shy feels like a waste of a spot if I can give him a different pokemon.
Starly: a bird pokemon the evolves into an even bigger, stronger, more aggressive bird feels like a good fit. Add the type advantage against grass and it adds some interesting conflict between Cilan as a grass type leader and Cilan as a trainer. Cons are that I suck at drawing birds (haha) and also the fact that starly also starts off quite shy. I feel like giving him a more brash pokemon would be more fun. Writing him meeting zorua, starly, and glameow would all basically be the same iteration of Cilan stumbling across the Pokemon.
Froslass: an ice type pokemon that’s elegant but also deadly, strong against grass, and is human shaped. It feels like a solid choice, especially since he’ll be (for a part of the fic) living at the Pearl clan settlement, near where the pokemon spawns in game. The one con is it’s ghost typing- the “dead man” motif is fun with one pokemon, but two would make me feel like I’m really beating it into the reader when I’d prefer it just be something they pick up on themselves.
Ninentails: not under serious consideration because it would be another Fox Pokemon, but it is an interesting enough idea to mention here.
Parasect: not sure what my reasoning is, but a bug type pokemon would make me laugh. Especially because parasect are known for being super aggressive in PLA.
Umbreon/Espeon- he would mirror Irida, who would be close with him in this fic, while not choosing an elemental type. But again, another fox pokemon seems like a bad choice.
Aipom- now. Now now now. This feels like a really good choice, particularly because of Pansage. Cilan and Pansage’s relationship is a minor focus of this fic, especially because Pansage spends the time that Cilan is gone notably not doing anything. He just… waits for Cilan to come back, for two years. Cilan returning with completely new pokemon, one of which is another monkey pokemon, would be super interesting to explore.
These are my base ideas. My apologies if I didn’t explain anything well- it’s midnight after my 7 hour shift, haha. I also just wanted to share this fic with the world, even if it’s just the idea of it.
