Dot grumbled as she turned in her bed, slowly opening her eyes. The sun was shining bright through her curtains; how long had she been sleeping? And why did she not feel rested at all, despite her presumably getting a lot of time to rest for once? Figuring she might have had some bad dreams or something, she didn’t pay it much mind. After taking a moment to adjust to the brightness in her room, she reached for her phone, turning it on to check the time.“Whuh– 11AM…?” Sighing, the purple-haired girl sat up in her bed, noticing the date under the current time as she did. “Oh, and it’s that day today… hm.”
Dot hadn’t been looking forward to the Nidothing channel’s third anniversary. She had been celebrating these milestone dates up until now, but as of recently, she hasn’t felt there was much cause for celebration, and thus didn’t plan anything in particular. It would just be another day.
Nidothing had evolved from an innocent girl’s hobby, set in motion in hopes of matching her idol, to a teenager’s day job, only kept going for the sake of keeping the Brave Olivine afloat. It’s not like she put in less effort than before; if anything, she tried harder now, in attempts to make up for her lost passion, but she still felt like something was missing. Making videos felt monotonous when it never did before, and she found her streaming to be utterly pointless. The adults were all working hard cooking, doing maintenance or checking on everybody. Liko and Roy had class, and whenever they didn’t, they would train to keep their skills up. Ult was… well, she was sure Ult was doing something with himself. All she did was stay cooped up in her room tapping away at her keyboard.
That kind of thing would never save him.
As her thoughts began to spiral, Dot tried her best to dress herself. She grabbed whatever was nearest and slipped it on, and while she was putting on her jacket, she heard her phone sound with a ping. Probably somebody liking a post she made or something. Ignoring it, she finished getting dressed, and turned on her computer. Like it or not, she would have to edit today. She needs to do her part, no matter how meager, or she would never let herself live it down–
ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping
“Wh-what the–” ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping “Stop it already–” Dot spoke, but her protests were drowned out by the constant noise, which felt much louder than it actually was to her tired self. “Wh-Why is–” bling bling bling bling– As if trying to torment her, her computer began to join in with its own chorus of sounds. “GAAAAAH–” With a scream, she threw her arm at her speakers to turn them off and lunged toward her phone, pushing through the sounds and the vibrations to put it on mute as well. Mercifully, that managed to stop the ringing, but she was left even more distressed than she already was. Sitting back down on her computer, she immediately began to check what could have caused all this noise, when–
“D-Dot! Are you alright!? I heard screaming! Is everything… okay…?” Liko spoke, bursting into the room, though her worries seemed to diminish once she saw Dot typing on her computer as usual, if a little paler than she was used to.
“...I’m… fine. Just gotta squash this bug. Sorry for all the noise.” Dot explained, keeping her focus squarely on her monitor.
“A… bug…?”
“My tech’s been screaming at me non-stop this morning for whatever reason. Maybe it’s a nearby Magnemite messing with them, I dunno.”
“Oh… well, what if it wasn’t a bug…? You know what day it is, right…?”
Dot sighed. She picked up on what it was her girlfriend was implying, but it felt like a silly hypothesis. “I do. I doubt that has anything to do with it, though. There aren’t nearly enough people that care about this channel to cause this much of a ruckus.”
“Isn’t there…? Your videos get a lot of views, don’t they?”
“I mean, yeah, sure. But my stuff is like, the fast food of videos.” Still not turning away from her devices, Dot continued to disparage her own work. “No one cares that much about content this disposable. Look, I’ll… check…?”
“See?” The blue-haired Trainer replied with a pinch of smugness as her partner’s expression changed to one of shock. “People do care. I was right~!”
“...Why?”
“Why do you think your videos are so bad, anyway?”
“My stuff is nothing special.”
“That’s not–”
“I’ve been doing the same thing for three years!” The influencer yelled, cutting Liko off. “Day in, day out, I stand in this room and regurgitate info I found elsewhere for people to watch. Every other content creator has been improving. I’m not even showing my face! It’s this suit, doing the same moves, saying the same things, every day non-stop! Actually, not even that! I’ve been posting less and less because I’ve been too busy not being there when you need me!”
“Dot… is this about the Six Heroes…?”
“...” She didn’t answer. “So why would anyone care enough to blow up my phone over it…? I just… I don’t get it…”
“...Your videos are much better than you give them credit for. They’re well-researched, well-explained, funny, well-produced… your personality is a highlight too! People come back because of the quality of your work, and because you’re fun to listen to!”
“...It just… can’t be that good.” Dot simply added, turning her chair away from Liko, making sure to continue to avoid her gaze.
The Trainer, having heard enough, decided to pull out the big guns. “Dot… do you want to know why I love your videos so much?”
“...” Still, no answer.
“Look at me, love.”
“Ah–” Surprised at the sudden nickname, the downcast streamer found herself turning her seat around again, before shouting in surprise. “What the–!?”
As it turned out, Liko had been carrying a huge layer cake the entire time. It was a blueberry cake with purple frosting and three lit blue-and-white candles arranged in a triangle (one for each year), with the shape of Nidothing awkwardly placed in blue colored whipped cream in the center. However, despite her surprise, Liko did not explain the delicacy, and simply continued.
“Your videos mean so, so much to me, Dot. Without Nidothing, I might not have been able to connect with Sprigatito as fast as I did at the start of my Pokémon Trainer journey. Without Nidothing, I definitely would not be as good at battling as I am now. And… without Nidothing, I might never have been able to reach you through the door of this ship.”
“Liko…”
“Hell… if you hadn’t had Nidothing… You may have never found me, back in Levincia over a year ago. Spinel might have gotten away with Terapagos… and I could be… w-well, my point is that… no matter how poorly you think of your work, it means so much to so many people.” Finally, Liko returned to the item she was carrying. “And… that’s why I have this cake now. I wanted to let you know just how much Nidothing– just how much you mean to me. Without your hard work, we would not be here right now. I know for sure I wouldn’t be nearly as happy… so I asked Murdock to bake this cake with me. Roy bought the ingredients, Orla had the idea for the whipped cream, and Mollie made sure I wouldn’t burn myself with the matches for the candles… everyone pitched in. Even Ult helped clean the kitchen after the fact!”
“Th-They… everyone…?” Dot felt tears well up in her eyes.
“Mhm. Everyone. We all care so much about you, and all the effort you put in.”
The streamer felt like she was going to melt. Her girlfriend’s innocent, caring smile, the knowledge of the entire ship working together to surprise her like this, and all the while, she wondered if any of them would be happier if she were gone… “I-I…” As the tears began to overflow, Dot tried to speak, her voice quivering. “I don’t know what to say…”
“Hmm…” Deciding to let her actions speak for themselves, Liko walked towards Dot, placing the cake on the desk next to her. Being careful not to cut herself, she used the knife she had brought to cut a thin slice of the delicacy, before putting it on a paper plate and placing it in front of the former shut-in. Finally, she motioned toward the larger-than-needed chair, letting her girlfriend know to make room for her on it, and sat next to her, kissing her cheek and resting her head on her shoulder. “How about “bon appétit”?”
“L-Liko… I… you’re…”
“Happy anniversary, Dot. I love you.”
Suddenly, the downcast girl felt the dark clouds in her mind all but vanish, leaving nothing but a soothing sunlight in their place. Her tears stopped flowing, and she found herself smiling peacefully, a light blush across her face. She reached for the paper plate, taking a bite out of the slice of cake. It was soft as a pillow, and sweet like candy.
“...I love you too, Liko.”
It tasted lovely.
