A friend of mine (you may remember KetMakura) just moved in with her fiance, so I'm wondering if I should get them anything. And if so, is a check acceptable?

Hmm is it a new house/apartment to both of them, because if it is then A Housewarming gift/check is very acceptable. However if one of them is just moving in with the other, then I don't think it's very appropriate.

If you're looking to spend alot, go with appliances or furniture.

If you don't want to spend too much, go for candles or something else that is decorative.

Oh, unless you're invited over, don't bother. It's money wasted essentially. Come on, let's be honest. If I go to a housewarming, I get a gift, but never give money unless specifically asked for it, it's rather impersonal. A cheap ikea vase with beads works! It gives the impression you care.

Yeah, money is pretty impersonal. If you don't want to buy something concrete, at least get a gift certificate or voucher.

Condoms!
Or a plunger.
Maybe two pairs of slippers and pyjamas? I like pyjamas...
