How are Pokemon and Items stored on/in the PC?

Okay you can only carry six pokemon with you at a time. After that all pokemon you catch are sent to Bill's or Lanette's PC depending on the game you're playing. In RBY and GSC when the box got full you actually had to go to a pokemon center to change boxes. Such a problem no longer occurs in the advanced generations where the pokemon is automatically sent to the next empty box. Long story short I want to know how it is possible for living creatures to be stored in a computer. Same question applies to the items. How can you store objects like pokeballs and vitamins in your PC? I'm really curious.
 
I think the same priniciple of how Pokémon are stored in Pokéballs applies here. Remember, these probably are not standard PCs but, rather, larger supercomputers than can conceivably be the size of a refrigerator. We know Pokéballs can shrink in size so that you can fit about three to four of them in the palm of your hand. As long as the room the PC's in is temperature-controlled (overheating would ruin its components, obviously, and melt the vitamins), there really wouldn't be much of a problem as far as storage is concerned. Although this also takes into account that there are things in the Pokémon world which are best described as 'magic,' and this is probably one of them.
 
Well, let's remember the anime way. A Pokéball can be transported from Pallet Town to Hoenn in a matter of seconds. They are kept in their balls, so the same thing could apply here.

Another thing to note from the anime is that Butch and Cassidy almost got away with all of the Pokémon Professor Oak was storing. Could the game equivalent be possible?
 
It is stored as data in the game so people could if they hack into it but I bet people are very careful with the system.
 
He did mention "in the game," but here we're hypothesizing on how this might (or might not) work in the real world. We're using the anime as our reference.
 
I was only using the anime as a reference. I thought I made that clear in my first post. The question is how they would be stored as data in the real world.
 
I know you were; I was actually responding to Another Fan's post. I'm not sure that you could convert a Pokémon into data, although if it can be converted into glowing red energy, I suppose anything's possible.
 
Next time use the quote button Barb. :-) Okay suppose pokemon have something in their genetic makeup that allows them to be converted into computer data and glowing red energy. That still doesn't explain how inanamate(sp?) objects such as pokeballs, vitamins, and whatnot can be stored as computer data.
 
Energy is not data. Energy can be stored in a Pokéball, and so those Pokéballs can be stored somewhere.
 
I've always considered it as something similar to the TNG Episode with Scotty getting trapped in the transporter.
 
I've always assumed that storing things "in" the PC was a simplification for ease of gameplay and game programming, and that the reality was much more like how it has been depicted in the anime.
 
There's a problem with that, Murg, and it's the transport system.

How do you get pokéballs (or other items) from a central storage place to anywhere else in Kanto (through technological means) in a matter of seconds? Essentialy put, you can't if you're physically moving the object. Trek-style teleportation is about the only possibility, and it's a scary one. Why?

Because, essentialy, teleportation in Trek is not, strictly speaking, movement. It's all about destroying an object or person at the start point, and simultaneously creating a 100% perfect copy at the end point of the transmission. Thus in this case, a devide at one end of the transfer would scan the object (say, a pokéball), get the perfect reading on its molecular constitution, etc - then "suck in" the pokéball and anihilate it. Meanwhile, its molecular data would be transfered (through good old net-like stuff) to the other end of the transfer, where devices would reconstruct the pokéball from the aforementioned molecular data.

Which really makes physical storage of items rather unnecessary - why bother storing items when you can just keep their molecular data on your hard drive, and replicate them when they're needed? (One possibility I CAN see is a copyright system - computers et al have safeguards built in them against storing "copyrighted" molecular structure - ie, Silph pokéball technology, etc. The reason for this being simple : preventing people from using the stored data for ONE pokéball to create for themselves tons of pokéballs)

But this has far more reaching implications. If they are able to create a perfect copy of an object from its molecular data almost at whim, then they can do so WITHOUT deleting the original object, and/or repeatedly off the same molecular dataset. A company (say, Silph) could create a basic pokéball, stuff it in the machine, type in "1000", then sit back and collect a thousand pokéball to sell. (Hackers and criminals could probably do the same, although I would assume some safeguards are built for copyrights, as mentioned above). Food of all sort would be obtainable almost on a whim, and probably at insanely cheap price, if any price at all.

The scariest part is, it goes on to explain a LOT of things - such as the lack of a developed traditional transportation system (8-wheelers, freight trains, etc) ; the leisurely nature of life in the pokéworld (food and other such basic item can probably be obtained for little to nothing*); the fact that we've virtually never seen any sort of industry besides energy production (various power plants), the ludicrous amount of free food giveaways at various tournaments ("free meals for the competers" at Indigo) - again, food would be insanely cheap to produce in the first place).

*Bikes, on the other hand...

I don't go for that model. I think of the transport system as being built around a property of the same subspace that makes my version of pokéballs possible.
 
Thoughts on teleportation

There are two points that arise from Damien's comments on teleportation. Firstly, it should be recalled that Trek-style beam transporters do not destroy the source object. The object is "de-molecularised" - literally disassembled at the sub-atomic level and held in the energy stream, which then carries it up to the ship where the molecules are re-assembled in something called a 'pattern buffer' around the enormously detailed 'pattern', the exact sub-atomic 'map' of where every particle in the object was at the moment of de-molecularisation.

Of course, this is a violation of several laws of physics. To deal with this problem, the Trek technobabble team came up with a gimmick called the "Heisenberg Compensator", a device that cancels out the normal quantum feature of it being impossible to know the exact location and motion of any particle at any time.

Of course, this does not completely end the 'copy of a dead man' debate as the Transporter still ends all life processes for the period of operation.

We know that Toshihiro Ono, at least, believes that the teleportation and storage systems owe a lot to beam transporter technology. In "Side Story: Ash vs. Gary", Bill tells the boys that he found the genetically modified Slowpoke as 'lost data' in the storage network's data banks. From the animé, however, we see that the Pokéballs are not stored as data but rather are racked up in a materialised form at a storage location. Ash and Gary's are in Professor Oak's labs and I imagine that there are similar stores in every Pokémon Centre. I imagine that what happened to Slowpoke was that its pattern was 'lost' in the system, as no destination pad was set when it was de-molecularised, the data was left cycling in some pattern buffer somewhere before Bill found it and diverted it to a transporter pad for re-molecularisation.

I guess that it would be theoretically possible to 'hack' the item storage network to give you infinate numbers of the object. After all, molecular replication (the less complex form of the transporter) is just assembling raw molecules into a pre-stored pattern. There is almost certainly software on the storage system to prevent you from doing this. A decent hacker should be able to circumvent this safeguard. :naughty: However, as materialising a living being (rather than a dead bit of meat exactly resembling the source object) requires the actual molecule stream from the original, it cannot be done with Pokémon.
 
There is an issue with using the Pokéballs to contain items: When Professor Oak wants to test his latest batch of Pokémon food on the Cerulean Gym Pokémon, he has to get Tracey to deliver it in person.
 
As far as I know, we have never seen the item storage system used in the animé, only the Pokéball teleport system. Maybe it does not exist in the animé universe,
 
In the games, I recall there being a large man in front of the research labs that says Pokemon and Items can be stored as data in PC's. Also, I believe Lanette said that the Pokemon Boxes' wallpapers served as an environment in which the Pokemon would be happy. Therefore, I see the Pokemon Storage system as something of a "virtual reality game" for Pokemon

Or maybe it was some legal trouble, since item storage (especially in very compact containers) was already done by Capsule Corp. in the DB universe.
