You're cruising the eBay when suddenly le wild Game You've Always Wanted But Never Got appears! You gasp! You stare! And eventually your eyes scan for the price.
You widen them further (and freak out some more) and it ends one of two ways, to the Cart or to the Wishlist...

So what I want to know is, would you pay the price without question or would you sadly walk away with your bank account still in-tact?

I'm curious about how serious some collectors are (or anyone really) for example, there's a store where I am selling Pokémon SoulSilver and HeartGold for over $100 (to use a well-known currency). Am I crazy for stopping myself from buying it or for not getting it while it was there?

I usually have knowledge of a game's worth or I'll quickly open Video Game Price Charting to see its value. Most of the time I'll wait it out and try to find the best possible price. I get cib copies unless it's for the SNES otherwise it's just too expensive. You can really get lucky on Ebay sometimes though. Earlier this year I was looking to buy Xenogears (PS1) complete in box. I knew it's worth around $40 and that's what it was going for on Ebay. I got lucky and ended up getting a pristine (and legit) cib copy for $25 shipped on Ebay. I saved $15 and I got the game I wanted!

Regarding HGSS, if it includes absolutely everything including the outer box and the Pokewalker, $100 is actually a great price. If it didn't include the outer box/Pokewalker, it's definitely worth less than $100. I'm glad I bought both of them when they came out. xD

I think the most I've spent on a single game was $110 for Chrono Trigger (SNES) and the manual. It might sound like a lot, but they usually go for $130-$150. I don't really buy things for myself so I don't mind spending money on video games as long as the price is not above the average.

On average, the most I would spend on a single game would be $90-$100 and that would be mostly from "collector's edition". I've passed on several collector's edition copies that go beyond my price such as FF XV, Mirror's Edge 2, etc.

For the most part, there haven't been a lot of rare or out-of-print video games that I've wanted, except for, funny enough, old Pokémon games like HeartGold and SoulSilver. However, I don't think that I would be willing to pay over $100 for it, because I simply don't believe that any game - no matter how rare or collectable - should be bought for that much money. That said, if the store you mentioned was selling HeartGold and SoulSilver for around $50 instead of $100 and if it was brand-new and sealed, then I would probably bite, because that sounds like a more reasonable price for an out-of-print game that was once $30-$40 and presumably isn't that rare (even if, knowing the market for old Pokémon games, it would likely never go that low brand-new, unfortunately). So overall, I'd be willing to pay a decent premium over the game's original price if it's new (because I prefer to buy anything media-related - including video games - brand new if I can), but if it's a used game at the same premium, or if the premium itself is absolutely insane, then not so much.

Usually no more than $30-$40, and I only spend that much on a single game like once a year. I've never been much of a gamer, and collector's edition stuff, be it games or what not, has yet to win me over

If there is a SE version of a game with goodies that come with it, then I'll gladly spend $100+ since those are, of course, rare. But any other game that I have played before but don't have anymore/don't own, then I'll buy them used at GameStop for less doesn't matter to me. As for HGSS I've them in stores with everything it comes with (walker, figure if they still give that to you after launch, box) for $40 still, so I wouldn't buy it on eBay (or anywhere/site it sells it for over 40) for $100, of course I already have the game that came with everything on launch so that's just me.

I think my GuildWars2 collector's edition was like $320 or something, I don't really remember. I also bought two copies of the original GuildWars collector's editions ages ago which were like $200 each (who knows what insane price they are now). Basically, if I want a thing I buy the thing, but on the flip side there isn't much that I want in the first place so it all balances out.

I'm pretty stingy, partly inherited from my parents, and partly because we don't have a lot of money (which led my parents to pass on their frugality to me, so I guess there's only one reason haha). I prefer to buy games new, I only buy games used when I'm desperate and new copies are too expensive. The most I've ever spent on a game is $50, I think. I'll pass on pretty much any Ultimate Collector's Limited Amazing Super-Special Edition kinds of things, since just being able to afford the game in the first place is pretty special to me. I'd say the average amount I usually spend on a game is about $20. Sales and Amazon are my best friends.

You are what I'd consider a serious collector @Chibster.. I would only spend that much if it was a brand new collectors edition that I really wanted, the most I've spent so far was on the FE:Fates SE which is so beautiful it was worth every cent [emoji38]

I missed HGSS because it was around the end of my high school days and all my cash was going to the local equivalent of cram school :(

But yeah, an amazing friend of mine managed to get both SoulSilver and Platinum for just under $30 both in their cases with all manuals! I'm so overwhelmed! [emoji1]

Asking around locally is the best bet if you want to find one at a lower price, that's how I found SS and Platinum :) or maybe check out the places @Tactician Karina mentioned if they're anywhere near you

Since getting my first job I have always at least considered buying the collector's edition of each game I buy. So I've tried to only pay for the CE of game series I REALLY love or they were just to cool to pass up. Unfortunately I end up loving 95% of the CE I see. -_- The most I've ever actually spent is probably around 200$ on I think a "Tales of" CE?

Now on used games I'm a lot pickier. I truthfully don't ever intend to pay more then maybe 50$ on a used game and it would have to have all the original casing/material with it as well. Most expensive used game I've ever got was some old Dragon Quest game on DS for like 30$. The only time I would spend over 50$ was if I found some crazy hard to find out of print JRPG, like "Persona Revelations" on PS1. Then I would consider hitting around the 100$ mark.

It depends on the game, largely. However, I will absolutely not pay above $80 for an old game for collector's value. I will try to find it via other methods, such as buying a digital copy as a lot of companies seem to do nowadays. For the most part, I'm willing to wait for a price drop on newer games. And I would much rather do that, because I have that instilled from my childhood because my parents basically took three years to buy me anything. However, things that I absolutely HAVE to have (like Final Fantasy XV and Sun and Moon) will be bought the moment they come out or pre-ordered. I still view the price of a new game as really expensive though. $60 is a lot to spend when you can just wait and play older games in the meantime. There's plenty to keep you busy.

Fun fact: the most we've paid for an old game was probably around $70 or so for Xenosaga III. It was money extremely well spent and totally worth every penny in my opinion, because not continuing the rich story of the Xenosaga series is an absolute crime to me.
