How did the dub get away with keeping Harley?

I was just thinking, when they dubbed Sailor Moon, they needed to change Neptune and Uranus, and SM was aimed at a slightly older audience than Pokemon, so how was Pokemon able to keep Harley in the dub?

...I don't understand your question? Neptune and Uranus were in a physical relationship, and did some very suggestable things.

Harley's just very...lively to say the least, Flamboyant sure, but nothing over the top or crossing any lines at all.

Because people are realizing that 10% of the world is gay and they're discovering they shouldn't be bigots by avoiding an "issue"! :D

Harley was just below that shade where weird really becomes too weird. Something like that.

It's simple, really:

Gay stereotypes are A-OK.

Normal people who just happen to be in homosexual relationships are not.

Not just gay stereotypes, but gay VILLAINOUS stereotypes are A-OK. Gotta show the kiddies that gay people are always pure evil.

When has Pokemon ever had characters in a (canon) gay relationship?

The same way they got away with gaying James up. =P

(I know he's fruity either way, my point still stands.)

Sailor Moon didn't *have* to change them, you realize.

I could go on about gay and otherwise non-straight characters in American and American-dubbed animation (Ritchie from Static Shock, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy in Batman, Oikawa from Digimon 02, etc), but I've said all those elsewhere.

Just 'cause Harley wears it on his sleeve doesn't make it much different.

Also, his flamboyance has nothing to do with his villiany. He's a jerk and there's a lot of jerks in the series. Why does him being the only flamboyant one make him so much different to people?

(also, I find there's more evidence for ASH being gay than for Harley. Harley's all about shocking people, after all, but he's far too much of a narcissist to fall for anybody)

Give me a break about the Ash being more gay than Harley.

Ash doesn't show affection for anyone and Harley is obviously flamboyant. I don't think he's metrosexual.

Oh come on. If the kid in movie 4 had been Samantha instead of Samuel, people would have shipped "her" and Ash like crazy and kept pointing out how "obvious" it was after that night in the tree with their arms around each other.

Also flamboyance has nothing to do with sexuality.

Simple. 4kids spent all their editing dollars raping One Piece.

If they really wanted to, they could have canged Harly's voice, clothing and dialog, but they were too busy desecrating other anime.

I've never seen any indication of Harley liking men...James is very "out there" but has attraction to women sometimes.

I don't see why homosexuality should be a problem when they had Meowth falling in love with that woman in the Parasect episode, and his obvious lust for the Boss.

Otherwise, what Dogasu said.

Even if they wanted to cover up Harley's flamboyant-ness, I don't think they could've. He was just...TOO flamboyant for them.

Then there's Hiroshi. And to a lesser extent, Masamune. And him trying way too hard to impress Shinji.

Except that gay overtones are probably the one thing they *don't* have a problem with. (also, we're talking about Pokemon here, not any other series...although I haven't noticed any problems with it in any other series they did, save for *maybe* cutting a scene where Joey and Tristian are in the same bed, but there were other shots of the same thing that were left in...)

What I'm more interested in is how the Shuckle episode managed to air unedited, given that it's basically entirely about noncon bestiality, including Meowth making out with James.

And Meowth may have been under the spell of the juice then, but he *has* been attracted to human men before even without it. Or one human man that is.

Ohhh yes Masamune. He was kinda freaky--wanting to throw the match so Ash would win because Ash was just that awesome to him and he didn't want to hurt him?
See, if that'd been Madison, people would have thought either "oh isn't that sweet, she wants her crush to win!" or "how sexist is that? She's throwing the match for her man!"
