How Did You Discover Pokemon?

Well, for me, that was over 10 years ago when I was a kid. My little sister and I used to walk into a video game store -- I think at that time was called Game Crazy,
and I would browse their list of magazines and books. And I saw one called "Pokemon." I was very much into animals then so I picked it up and told my mom there were a bunch of animals in it and that I wanted it. (But you know they are called Pokemon, right?).

So she bought me it and I would take that book with me in the bathtub, have long soaks, and read it while I was in there.

Before long I became addicted to it.

So I told my mother to buy me a Gameboy, and she did, and I remember buying Pokemon Red for it, and becoming a Pokemon Master within 1 short month.

And that was just generation 1.

By routinely going to "Game Crazy" was how I discovered other movies, books, and video games as well. Another resource was the Internet, where I discovered something known as "Neopets" but that is another whole game entirely, not to mention, its online, but I know about it!

I'm actually a bit of a late-comer to the franchise. I had a few trading cards and had seen a few episodes when I was younger, but overall everything Pokémon held little interest for me. It wasn't until high school that I became infatuated with the series. And just this year, I finally purchased my first official game (because up until recently, the only way I could play any of the games was through emulators).

I had known about Pokemon for a loonngg time, however, it held no interest to me whatsoever. I did not understand it and I just liked other things better.
However, just last year, though, in August/Early September, I was at my grandmother's house and she brought up that she had a game for the DS and wanted to know if I wanted it. It was Pokemon Platinum. I saw it was Pokemon, shrugged, and said sure, not wanting to be rude. The next day, I went home and popped it in my DS. It was all new to me, and it was strange...However, I went along with it. I explored the routes and such, and before I knew it I had became addicted. I started looking up the Pokemon i caught and tutorials for the game, and I couldn't put it down. It was so amazing, and I loved it. ♥ The plot was amazing, I loved the Pokemon, it was just all so fascinating... By the time Christmas came around and I got Black and White for my DS, I had over 400 hours on my Pokemon Platinum. To this day, it still remains my favorite game and generation of all time. It amused me to think that the franchise I ignored for so long was actually going to be my favorite franchise in the near future...
That's how I discovered Pokemon. :3

I don't remember actually... Years ago, when I was still living in Asia, I knew about Pokemon... only from the giant Pikachu plush I had in my room, which I don't know where it went... I really had zero knowledge of Pokemon, not even enough to know the difference between "Pokemon" and "Pikachu" (I really didn't know). I don't remeber what the first Pokemon movie I watched was, but I think it was M02. It goes very vague for the next few years and eventually got into it, so much so I literally committed myself to watch every single episode of the Pokemon Anime. I stopped somewhere in the Battle Frontier and resumed about a year later... And the most valuable Pokemon merchandise I own today are 2 Pokemon Pikachu 2 GS... And a Pokemon the First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back video cassette...

It was actually through the trading cards around the start of 1999.

My mom and dad bought Pokemon cards for me and my older sister when she was 8 and I was 6. Later we got the games - I got Red and she got Blue. My sister got a Pikachu plush and I got a Squirtle plush and a Meowth plush. My Meowth is in good condition, but my Squirtle is missing one of its eyes.

The funniest thing was that I lost my Pokemon Red copy at my great-grandmother's house in 2001. When she died in 2004, we cleaned out her house and I found my Pokemon Red copy - and my old Game Boy!

I remember catching the first airing of the second episode after school. I kept tuning in and talking about it until my parents bought Red and Blue for us kids.

I found out about Pokemon, after a group of my classmates were talking about a highly sought after card at the time (Base set Charizard card), I saw the card and became interested in finding out more about Pokemon. I got a pack of cards and saw my first three episodes, and followed Pokemon-related things ever since then.

13 years ago when I was 3, I used to watch it on TV with my parents and my older brother. Don't remember much other than that.

Oh jeez, I first found out about it when I was like, 2 or something. I was always obsessed with this one movie (I can't remember what it was) and one of the trailers that showed before it would get to the movie was "Pokemon: Mewtwo strikes back". It only briefly interested me because I really loved Rapidash's design (A unicorn who's hair is literally fire? Hell yeah!) Since I barely knew what Pokemon were, I actually assumed that Mewtwo was the hero, and Mew was the villain (because I saw it as a red vs. blue thing, where red is bad and blue is good, and since Mewtwo's psychic power thingies are blue and Mew's is red, well, you know what I assumed).

Then I remember a few parts from Pokemon the movie 2000. I mostly remember The Articuno and a little bit of Lugia.

Then when I was about four or something, I watched Jirachi: Wish Maker, and I immediately fell in love with Absol. I didn't remember his name, but I just knew him as, "that cool white wolf with a knife on its head". My love for Absol stayed, but I still didn't really care about any other Pokemon. Now my sister, even though she didn't care and still doesn't care about Pokemon, LOVES Lucario and the Mystery of Mew movie. I find it really ironic that my favorite Pokemon is Zoroark and hers is Lucario, which according to the fandom, are bitter rivals.

So when Gen IV came out, I tried to get interested by watching a few of the anime episodes, but I got bored so easily because I couldn't remember the names of any of the Pokemon. But I still did like the movies, especially "Giratina and the Sky Warrior". Then Zoroark: Master of Illusions came out. When I first saw it, I was just blown away, mostly because I had never seen Zorua or Zoroark in the anime, and the whole story felt brilliant for just a ten year old. So like how I fell for Absol, I fell for Zoroark, and I was really confused when I started crying at the "supposed death" scene. I was confused because it was then that I realized that I actually cared about the Pokemon series. Before the night was even over, I was already looking up all the info I could about Gen V and Zoroark. Then a few months later, I bought Pokemon White.

Oh god, I ranted about my childhood again...

I was aware Pokémon since I was about four, but wasn't really that into it. I think what made me want to play a Pokémon game was getting into the Super Smash Bros. series about five or six years ago- I loved playing as Pikachu and found the Pokéball item and the Pokémon that came out of it quite cute and interesting.

I found out about Pokemon from my classmates in elementary school being huge fans of the games, trading cards and the anime. Oddly enough, I wasn't into Pokemon at first since people were giving me a hard time for not liking it, or at least liking something that wasn't popular, so I wasn't really into it. My older brother used to watch the show and play the video games, although I think I only saw him getting Blue, and one day, I was watching an episode with him. I watched Pikachu's Goodbye with him and I cried at the end, despite not seeing much of the show before hand. The only part I saw was maybe part of that episode with Ponyta. Anyway, after that, I got hooked into the series, got a Pikachu plush and started playing the games in the second generation with Silver.

I first heard of it mentioned at school, from a family member, AND mentioned on the radio all at the same time back in 1998. I think a year before that I found out about Gameboys and stuff (ssh, I was 6) so I was able to quickly get the game, some toys, and find a channel that showed the anime.

I remember I skipped school one day to see the movie in theaters when it came out, lmfao. (although that didn't matter much since I was in elementary...)

I was sorta getting ito it and then i borrowed red off my cousin while on holiday in Bognor Regis fell in love with and that was that bascally

When I was five I saw one episode of pokemon and started drawing what I saw, Pikachu and Charmander, all over the place. I ended up drawing Charmander on the wall so my cousin bought me the game for my sixth birthday. My brother didnt give it to me until I was eight though because he thought he was too young fro video games...

I inherited a couple boxes of cards when I was 7 or 8. (A friend's older brother had outgrown them. How do you OUTGROW POKEMON? It is well scandalous!) Got my first game at 10. LIFE-CHANGING.

A younger schoolfriend brought it over one day and played it on the Super Game Boy. G1 Blue version, Squirtle was his starter, and he was having a lot of trouble with Lt. Surge. I picked up Red version, picked Charmander (and had a lot of trouble with Misty).

The sad part is I don't think we ever really got to battle our teams, since his family moved out of town later.

I'm not really sure how it really started, most of my memories I have trouble putting in a timeline.

I do remember being interested in Mewtwo because he looked like 'that guy from Dragon Ball' before I even knew Frieza's name.

I also remember seeing someone else playing a Generation III game when I was really young, though I'm not really sure what it was.

Then there's Pokemon Crater, the cards, the anime, this forum, etc.
