Pokemon as awhole, Anime, games, whatever.

I knew about Pokemon around Fall of 98 but I hated it with all of my heart, until one day my neighbor asked me as a favor to tape Pokemon for him, so what the heck, I taped the Magnemite episode when Pokemon used to air weekday mornings on KidsWB. I kinda liked it, but it took me a few eps to get it in me. The games? My neighbor kept mentioning the games, and I kept watching the show, so I just had to get my hands on that game
somehow. my dad bought it for me on July 11th 1999. Pokemon blue.

I was a happy almost 9th grader

I was working in my high school library when the seizure incident happened, so I decided to read up on the show. Then it aired here, and I was hooked. I bought the card game and got the video game (Red version) for my birthday.

I first heard of the show from a children's news program, it was talking about this show that is was really popular in both Japan and the US and the report was wondering if it would do as well here. The report also had a bunch of children playing with Pikachu stuffed toys, I liked the look of Pikachu and decided it was worth checking out if I found out what channel it was on, sure enough, a little while later, just as I started taking my GCSE exams, I found Pokémon on Sky One and watched it from that point onwards =D

The time: Fall/Winter 98

The place: My house

I had just received my latest Disney Adventures magazine in the mail, and as I paged through the stories, comics, and features, one particular ad in the technology section caught my interest: a bunch of weird creatures about to be caught in a giant net. One creature caught my interest: a tiny yellow mouse with a lightning bolt tail. I keep the little guy in mind as I set the magazine on the shelf with all my back issues.

The next day, at school, I asked my then best friend just what was this Pokemon thing that was taking the school (a middle school, mind you) by storm. He proceeded to let me hold a figurine of the mouse creature he owned. I learned that the creature's name was "Pikachu". "Pikachu" belonged to a boy named "Ash", who, along with his friends "Misty" and "Brock", traveled around in hopes of becoming a "Pokemon Master".

Later, I'm having a snack and watching tv...and a commercial with "Pikachu" in it came on...I went and got Blue that weekend...and the rest is history!

I can't remember exactly, but this is a good question. I know I first got the game christmas/Dec 1998 with Pokemon blue, and first getting the Gameboy Color, but I liked the series a lot before that. I know I watched the anime from its premer when they use to show it on UPN (which, nostalgically I loved that block because it had Sailor Moon, Transformers: Beast Wars, Pokemon, and some other show I can't remember that I liked a lot too), I also knew that I knew about it before the Anime, Card games, and the rest came out in the US because I remember buying and liking the model toys at a local import shop.

Actually, I wish they still made those action figure models because they were pretty cool. That and the Bomberman-styled B-daman figures I wish they made more of (I had collected those too at the same time). I remember this was what got me into the series because I thought the monster designs were cool. The first pokemon I knew about were Blastoise, Scyther, Charizard, and Pikachu which was because of the toys... I remember making my first favorite pokemon when I saw sandshrew in a commercial advertising the premer of the pokemon anime.

Though, now that I think about it, I first heard about the series in an article form EGM (or Nintendo, I think) about them bringing over the series to the US in TV and Game form after reaching super success in Japan. It came out either in the spring of 98 or the fall of 97..

saw commercial on fox kids, watched the 1st episode and and then that is what got me hooked

I first heard about it in 1997 after the seizure thing, but I didn't become interested in it until 1998 when I read an article in Nintendo Power announcing its coming to America.

Red Version fell from the sky at me as I was walking along from a Charity event, and the game was stolen from their, so I was sent to a detention camp wheir I had to dig holes, which I found a GBC and another Red Version in a treasure chest, and it seems Tajiri buried it himself!

Errr....I Red for Christmas after I heard it in NP.....and I've been a fan ever since.

Um, the first thing Pokémon-releated I remember was watching TV and seeing the end of Pokémon Emergency. I don't know how, but I knew it was Pokémon. In '99, I lived on a cul-de-sac populated by families that had boys around my age, all of which were Pokémon fans because it was cool. So I started watching around the beginning of the post-Charmander's evolution period, got a starter set, and got Yellow version. I was hooked.

Speaking of which, I remember once seeing The Problem of Paras and noticing that Charmander had changed color, gotten a bit bigger, had a horn on his head, and wasn't listening to Ash! :O Confused, I went on to go "ZOMG Charmander mutated" to the billions of boys, to get repsonses like "It evolved, duh!".

...yeah. :D

Lol, I remember in Fifth grade everyone had Pokemon stuff and I didn't as my parent wouldn't let me, and then they said it was "uncool" near the end of the year, and I was a loser for liking it. Seriously, I'm the only one who likes it at my school, and I'm tormented about it all the time....

When I was in seventh through ninth grades (ages 12-14), in a desperate attempt to be popular, I fervently hid my liking of Pokémon. People would ask me about liking it, and I would deny it and at the most say I used to like it. Actually, after that period, I actually did lose a lot of interest in it until my senior year. I stopped watching the anime (except the movies) and didn't post on as many forums.

Now I'm a college sophomore, and I have Pikachu and Squirtle keychains hanging from my rearview mirror, and I wear my Lucario t-shirt with pride. :)

Yes Argy, have pride in your interest!

Of course, it's alot easier for a girl to like things people see as "kiddyish" then it is for a guy.

Haven't posted for some time...

As with most things that stretch back to more than a few years (especially before 2001), I can only remember fragments of it. I do remember the first time I encountered Pokémon, abielt faintly. I remember seeing a lot of then-new and fresh Pokémon merchandise from Japan being displayed in some shop somewhere, and among them was a gaint figure of what we now all know is a Pikachu. This was probably sometime in 1998 or 1999; I remember thinking that it was "just another crazy thing from Japan" (at that time, I was still quite anti-Japan - don't ask why). I'm not sure what happened afterwards, but I do recall getting hit so hard by the Pokémon craze in 2000 or 1999 (how, I can't remember) that I became an instant fan (a noobish one, though :sweatlol: ). I bought a lot of the merchandise, among them a giantic Japanese Pokémon poster-scroll thingy, and a Pikachu t-shirt (which is now sadly somewhat torn, but I still keep it). I also got into the anime; it was the English version at first, then I saw the Taiwanese Chinese dub on VCD, and I remember getting awed by the original Japanese « Mezase Pokémon Master » opening (the Taiwanese keeps the original openings and endings intact when dubbing them). One element that especially awed me was the energy symbols; another was a hard-to-describe kind of magic emnating from it that pulled me in.

Then, I can't remember when either (should be around 2002 or 2003), but I stopped liking Pokémon. I simply switched over to something else; the fad ended at around this time too. Can't remember much after that.

In around 2004, I finally got regular internet access at my home. And it was while surfing around the internet that I stumbled across both deviantART and some Pokémon fansites (can't remember which came first, or if they came together). The Pokémon fanart and some of the material I read (mostly anti-anti-Pokémon related) rekindled my interest in Pokémon. I also saw images of two Pokémon characters I rememebered seeing before my liking of it first died; I learned that they were known as Latios and Latias, and I remember being attracted to their designs, as well as the designs of a few other then-new-to-me Pokémon I found. I started liking Pokémon more, and eventually reached a sort of a small craze. I bought whole collections of Pokémon merchandise; I have an entire set of a Japanese Pokémon keychain collection, an entire set of McDonalds Pokémon toys ( :sweatlol: ), and several figures of Pokémon, as well as the Tomica toy models of the Pikachu Car and the Pocket Monsters Bus; I also bought and framed two Japanese Pokémon movie mini-posters (they were for the two most recent Pokémon movies), and hung them in my room. I also have the Japanese book about the Japanese Pokémon movies (up to the eight/third A.G. movie).

I might be long-winded, but yeah. This sums things up pretty well. And instead of hiding my love for it, I openly tell and show everyone I like it; I have a Celebi keychain on my bunch of keys on my wallet, and I have a Lugia keychain and Ho-oh keychain attached on my handphone and it's pouch.

I don't really give out that "I only like Pokémon because it's cute" vibe, though. It's a lot more nerdy, but I'm not unpopular or shunned...

I know, but it's easy for girls it seems to like stuff "aimed" at kids then it is for guys.

lol, I have that shirt!

I think I did that in 9th grade a bit, I kind of hid it in a don't ask don't tell way (actually with pokemon and digimon). However if someone did find out I'd say that I did like it, I'd tell them the truth, and add one of the reasons I'm into it (which is the fact that I love Zoology and exploration, so a game about going around discovering new creatures is highly appealing to me). It turns out by the end of the year most people knew and it didn't effect my popularity any so I just did whatever after that.

Eh, I liked pokemon at an age where it was okay to.

Now I like it, don't particularly hide it. Not that I have friends though, so it wouldn't matter anyway.

Found it through the anime. Had yellow. Then I got cut off from everything. So, coming back when RSE had been around for a while was an interesting experiance. Now I despise the anime, but love the games.

I discovered it whilst watching Batman with my sister one Saturday morning. This must have been... oh, late 1997 or early 1998. An ad for the anime popped up, and it intrigued us both. So we watched an episode, although I can't remember which. Okay, it was interesting, and got me even more intrigued.

This was around the time my family got a computer with internet connection, and I was only just figuring out how to us it. So, going online, I researched all I could on this Pokémon thing. I was delighted to realize it was a game in addition to a cartoon, so I saved up my money until I could afford a Gameboy(teal colored! :-D), and a Red version, while my sister got Blue. And we both picked Squirtle.

After that, all our cousins got into it, and then I found out it was this huge thing, yadda-yadda.

My interest in the show kind of waned after Tracey/Kenji got the boot, and I realized the Johto episodes bored me. I still played the games, with varying degrees of interest, up until maybe two years ago, when I started to find other things to occupy my time.

I think I really came back when I heard some talking about this new Pokémon D/P. I was all 'o.O WTF, come again?' I was quite excited, oddly moreso than I was when R/S was announced. So... that brings me to now.

And I really did not mean to type so much. Whoops.
