How do I make my avatar's backround transparent?

I want my avatars backround to be transparent so there isn't a white backround

You usually have to use photoshop or a similar program to get rid of the background.

Erase the white background with the eraser tool in your image editing program and save the image as .PNG

And make sure your image file is within the avatar size limits (100x100 for regular users), otherwise vBulletin will scale your image down and discard all transparency information.

You can use a professional image editor, but if you don't have the money I heard GIMP is good for transparency.
