How do we get the 1st gen starters?

How do we get the first generation starters like Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander?

Defeat Red, and head to Pro. Oak's lab.

Are you serious? Is their any other way to get it near the start of the game? I really don't want to have to go through the whole game. D:

The only other way to get it is to trade from DPPt, or transferring through Pal Park once you get to Fuschia City.

What about could I trade it with someone over Wifi?

Well, I traded something off, got a japanese charmander, and bred it to get a shiny.
