How do you defeat Roark in D&P when you pick Chimchar?

Chimchar is my favorite starter in D&P and I want to play the game with it, but how do I get past Roark? Is there a certain Pokemon I should catch or train? I'm trying to evolve my Biberel so it can be a water type, but I'm running out of trainers to battle.

The most frustrating thing is that there are gyms that Chimchar would own, but I can't get to them. Any help would be appreciated.

Roark is the first one right ??
If you level up chimchar enough then he learns mach punch. Or catch a machop in the grass just north or the town.

fighting beats rock. It's the same strategy in RSE.

I'm going through Diamond again, without evolving any Pokémon, and to beat Roark, I used the Hidden Power TM on my Chimchar, who had a Steel type HP. Obviously this won't work for everyone, but you could experiment =)

Evolve your Chimchar to get Mach Punch, get a Budew, or get a Machop at Route 207. You could even fish for a Magikarp.

lol i dont understand this thread :S there are so many pokemon in the game
surely the answer is simple

use a different pokemon. :p
you dont ONLY have your starter :p

Heh, it's just like the classic gym trouble, only ten years later. Except this time Machop are available.

I really would go with that solution. Others will work, but Machop and its evolutions are really useful Pokémon even after Roark is defeated.

Thank you very much for the advice. I'll go catch a Machop and use him/her. Thank you.

I know that. It's just that not a lot of the ones that can beat Roark's Pokemon are availiable by the time you get to the gym. That's why I asked.

An easier alternative is level Chimchar to 14, let it evolve, and it immediately learns Mach Punch if you let it. I've owned Roark many a time this way.

1): You can train Chimchar until it evolves into a Monferno. Evolving exactly at LV 14 will allow it a chance to learn Mach Punch. This is greatly recommended, as Monferno would greatly help in clearing through the next two gyms.
2): You can capture a wild pokemon that is strong against rock-types. I greatly recommended Budew, since it can learn decent grass-type attacks at a low level (namely Mega Drain at Level 13). It can do 4x damage against the majority of the gym leader's pokemon. It would be better than using Machop, where fighting-type moves only do 2x damage against Roark's pokemon. Also, all of them except Cranidos have very high defense and low special defense.

Evolve it and teach it Mach Punch.

If not, keep it as is, and teach it Rock Smash (but you have to deal with the crap after a while).

Or you can get a Geodude and rape with Magnitude.

Or you can get a Machop and use fighting moves.
