Many of the main characters (aside from Brock or Cilan I suppose), have had a crying scene when they lost a big match, usually in a type of tournament, contest, or emotional battle.

Ash cried after he lost to Richie, May in the Kanto GF, Dawn after her losing streak in contests, Iris after Excadrill wouldn't obey her, etc.

How do you feel about the crying scenes in the anime? Do they make you feel more emotionally connected to the characters? Or do you think the crying scenes are pointless? Do you think crying makes these characters seem weaker, or more human?

I thought May's crying was justified because we will never get to see her have another chance. So justified from an audience's point of view, but not necessarily in-universe.

I never thought of it that way, but that's a good point. In-show there are countless other Grand Festivals and chances to win, but for the audience we'll never see them. Makes you wonder whatever happened in the Johto Grand Festival....not like we'll ever know.

Who doesn't like the crying the scenes? They make a character seem like an actual human with weaknesses and flaws.

Unless the person cries all the time and ti gets irritating. But honestly, I never hated when someone cried or was annoyed by it. I always felt some sort of genuine connection to the character because it made them feel like humans.

It makes me care for them a little more i'd say, however it's nothing that special. If i was ten and did pokemon battles etc. I'd probably cry everytime my pokemon lost. Compared to reality, the amount of times these ten year olds have cried is astonishingly low.

I like them. We need more of them, "done right" or not...

This one has a really odd answer for me, because none of the crying scenes really got to me. Don't take that the wrong way, because I know why they're there, it's just that I can't sympathize with most of them. Admittedly, though, stuff like in Movie 1 and Movie 8 often do get me to cry at least the first time. I probably should've answered "if it's done right", but the show rarely ever does it right. So you lost a tournament, no big deal. (like I said, I realize this may be more crushing for someone as young as the cast is) Someone important to you may have died or you have to say goodbye to a friend? Ok, you can cry.

May's crying scene was definitely the saddest one in my opinion.

I wouldn't mind Ash shedding a tear if he loses again to another legendary. I really felt I was going to cry in the Sinnoh league because after Ash's match with Paul. Everyone else I understood.

I hate the crying scenes purely because they are pointless.

I agree with this. The crying scenes never really got to me either, I'm pretty much like. Meh you lost, build a bridge, get over it and train harder so you won't lose again. None of the movies ever really teared me up either. When Ash died, I was kinda indifferent but I was crying by the end of the film though (only cause I had lost my brand new Sandslash keychain, it fell somewhere between the seats, that I just got from Burger King before we went to see the movie in theater's)

I hate the crying scenes purely because they are pointless.

So then you think characters should feel no emotion when they lose a match or release a Pokemon?

Re: How do you feel about crying scenes in the anime after a main character's big lo

I think crying scenes are justified on several occasions, especially after a character releases their pokemon. I would find it unusual if the characters didn't display some sort of emotion.

Crying scenes should be used in moderation. If one of the characters cries too often, it would just get annoying.

It makes me care for them a little more i'd say, however it's nothing that special. If i was ten and did pokemon battles etc. I'd probably cry everytime my pokemon lost. Compared to reality, the amount of times these ten year olds have cried is astonishingly low.

I agree, kids that age tend to cry a lot (both boys and girls). So, it's definitely normal when one of the kids cries over losing on the show.

Re: How do you feel about crying scenes in the anime after a main character's big lo

I like them if they're used in moderation. I remember when I was younger I would get annoyed by May crying, but now it doesn't really bother me. Sometimes those scenes do get to me depending on the situation (it's usually during a release of departure rather than losing a competition) but other times it doesn't really effect me. I kind of prefer it when a character doesn't cry during a loss because it shows how stronger they've become. That why I like that Dawn didn't cry when she lost the Grand Festival. I can understanding losing your first major competition but after a while you just have to try to learn to grow.

It depends on the situation, who is doing the crying and why. One of my favorite cries, not saying that I liked the crying but I could feel where that sadness was coming from; May losing to Solidad at the Kanto GF.

When she lost to Drew in Hoenn it was the Top 8, she made a good comeback but made the fatal error of using a direct attack which caused her the match but people were cheering for her even after she lost.

But against Solidad, she literally got her ass whopped it was like she stood 0 chance of winning that battle like the two times that Drew fought Robert in Hoenn. He didn't cry (only when he lost his first contest to Solidad) but it was sad cause he made it to the final battle of the GF.

You know, she made it to the top 4 and at that point in the series Ash never got that far in a league yet. Its one thing to lose a match if it was a battle where you didn't know who'd win because it was neck and neck but another to lose a match you had no chance of winning.

But I loved how Ash, Brock and Max was there for her after she lost and they comforted her.

As for another good cry; Ash when he hugged Pikachu at the end of "Pikachu's Goodbye" nothing needs to be explained the episode speaks for itself.

My response is like this: Get. Over. It.

The only times I've felt a tad of anything for a character crying was with Dawn; because she was only new, and she obviously had high aspirations considering her mother's success (and no, I don't mean success at having a figure like that after having a kid. Mmmm-hmmm).

Re: How do you feel about crying scenes in the anime after a main character's big lo

No, but crying is overused and adds no meaning to the plot.

Re: How do you feel about crying scenes in the anime after a main character's big lo

To be completely honest, whenever a crying scene happens, I don't really feel anything... It's just like "oh, okay, they're crying because they lost" or whatever the reason was. I don't feel like the scenes make me care about the character more lol. It does makes them seem more vulnerable, which they are, since they are young kids. But I don't think it makes me really care anymore or less than I already did.

Re: How do you feel about crying scenes in the anime after a main character's big lo

I think they are important because the anime is cheesy and these scenes might make the anime looks slightly dramatic.

Re: How do you feel about crying scenes in the anime after a main character's big lo

As long as the situation is reasonable and the acting/dialogue is good I'm all for the crying scenes since it is makes the characters more human and relatable. Like it was said many times May's after the grand festival was a good one, Ash in Pikachu's goodbye is a very good one but sadly (no pun intended) I have been feeling less and less about recent scenes like this I for some reason can't sympathize with Ash when he got destroyed by Paul on their first full battle.
