How do you get all Pokémon?

One thing just popped up in my mind. Suppose you buy a newer Pokémon game, and wanna fill the PokéDex in this version, or just want all Pokémon in this version to complete online or with other players, how do you get them?

Do you just trade your all Pokémon from older version to this newer one? It would really be boring to catch same Pokémon again and again in newer version. Much cool to use already trained and evolved one.

Sorry for this stupid question, but I play games on emulators. So I don't have experience of linking 2 version or battling multiplayer. Each game is stand-alone and single player to me :(

It's impossible to complete the Pokedex with just one game without cheating. I'm currently playing all the games from Gen III onwards to complete the Pokedex. But that's cause I'm a huge dork. I think you can complete it just with Platinum, HGSS and BW, except some events.

I bought Pokemon White in the spring last year after having played the Generation 1, 2 and 3 games, but sat the 4th gen games out.

I got the pokemon not available in my White version in 4 principal ways. Firstly, through the Dream World. Secondly, by asking for trades on another internet forum I visit. (I obtained pokedex ticks for all of the event-only pokemon this way, by tradebacks.) Thirdly, and this was after I already had quite a good collection, I bought a copy of Platinum and traded forward a number of pokemon from that game. So I did trade from a previous game, but I only obtained a minority of the pokemon I have that way. I also got some species from the Global Trade Centre (of course you are restricted as to which pokemon you can get that way, because you can only ask for pokemon that you have "seen").

Essentially I agree with what has been said. It will require trading and using past games to get everyone in a single game.

I was going to start a thread very similar to this one so perhaps someone here can give me the answer. The last Pokemon game I had was Pokemon Gold and Silver for the Game Boy Color and I haven't played a Pokemon game since. I've just this minute ordered a 3DS which should be here in tomorrow. I've also borrowed a DS from someone so I can trade with myself.

Could anyone please tell me what games I would need in order to collect all (647 :eek:) Pokemon on my DS? Thank you :)

Thats quit an undertaking! I'm no expert (I breed, not collect) but I think you just need B/W, P/D, HG/SS, and then the GBA versions too! But like I said, idk ;P

I have collected all 493 Pokémon available in Generation IV and to do it in Black or White version currently you would need Black, White, Pearl, Diamond, HeartGold and Soul Silver and @Doug you don't need GBA versions if you can get a Special Regigigas from a trade forum, or have been to the event, to catch the legendary golems in Platinum. In Diamond and Pearl and Black and White you could just get one of games of each of those pairs and use the Global Trade Station to get the version exclusive Pokémon of the other version. To get the event Pokémon like Mew and Celebi you either need to wait for all the events to happen (which I started doing from the movie Shaymin event) or use the trade forum to find them being offered or ask for them with a reasonable offer. Eventually, near the end of a generation, all the Pokémon in the National Pokédex in a generation will be available without having to rely on transferring Pokémon from the previous generation games.
@Sophia There are Arceus and Mewtwo events currently happening which will be very useful for completing the National Pokédex. Also the trade forum on BMGf is Bulbagarden Global Trade Station.
@Ryan203 When you move Pokémon from one generation to another you transfer by using the Pal Park in Sinnoh or PokéTransfer Lab in Unova which is near Black City/White Forest and uses the download play feature of the DS and the Pokémon you recieve can't be transferred back to the original game therefore it is not exactly trading.

Theres a mewtwo and arceus event going on? I haven't seen anythign about that o;

By trading over my perfected Gen4 dex, breed for needed prevos and catch the missing gen 5.
Eats a lot of box space though.
