i just bought a DS light, but i cannot seem to get the infernal wi fi connection working. i have been to three different hot spots, and nothing. the smuck at best buy said it could use wi fi right out of the box. but nothing has worked so far.

When you start up the game, there is an option to configure the WiFi connection. You need to do that first if you want to use a non-Nintendo hotspot.

There are essentially three types of WiFi connections: Open, WEP, and WAP. An Open connection does not require a password just to connect to the device (and is an insecure connection), and while this is the easiest to connect to, you might not be able to use it with your DS. Why? Because many open access points at places like schools or cafes require you to visit a special webpage and log in before it will let you go anywhere else. Since your DS does not have a web browser (unless you got one for it somewhere), you can't do this, so it won't work.

A WEP connection is encrypted using an insecure method. Your DS can connect to it if you have the right key, though knowing exactly how to put
the key in can be tricky. The key is usually a long string of hexadecimal digits (0-9 and A-F).

A WAP connection is a good, mostly secure connection which uses normal passwords. Unfortunately, the DS will not connect to WAP connections.

So yeah, WiFi can be tricky, especially if you are trying to use someone else's connection. Especially if you're doing it without asking first. I think that a lot of GameSpot and McDonalds locations have Nintendo access points which should work pretty much automatically though.
