When they are 10 and start their journey do they just get out of school or have an excuse.

Well, EToP claims they have a temporary leave of school but no other media even suggest school is involved (Poketech doesn't seem to count as a normal school)

I gather that a lot of the basics are taught at home, since most kids are expected to go on this journey eventually. Those who don't do go to school, though class sizes are probably small.

There is probably little that is taught to trainers before their journey. They obviously read, write, do math, probably basic science, maybe some cooking if the parent is good at that, sorta boy scout/girl scout stuff. The essentials for survival. Ash obviously has also taught himself some survival and natural skills, since he seems to be an exceptional climber. I'm wagering that biology is also something that is briefly taught, since pokemon are biological species. But other advanced branches of math and science are probably over looked. No 9-year old could even sit through that. No way. (Of course Tracy in Japan seems to have a knowledge of basic chemistry based of the power of one so maybe I'm wrong). PE is probably not even brought up because... well, just think about it. They're walking across the region. Who needs PE?

Oh, and basic health stuff, like recognizing basic illnesses is probably a main topic, since wild area seems to be abundant in the pokemon universe. However, if Ash is anything to go by, sex ed is practically tabooed. Anything relating to relationships beyond friendship is avoided. Or Ash is just dense. Whatever.

So, in short, basic education needed for a long, long journey across a region and miles of wide, untamed area. All home-schooled. And once the trainer returns, they probably take classes to get into an occupation, assuming there isn't a pokemon-central job they can take. Then again, managing a mart can't be too hard.

I was thinking too. In DP26, Dawn had kindergarden school. That might be the only school people were supposed to go. Then, they could choose to go on to a pokemon trainer school or leave on an adventure.

yea thats what i was thinking. on the bulbapedia forum i asked if we should make a page or section on this topic what do you think

maybe it's a choice wther you want to become a trainer, and if you suck at it you ruin your life, or if you want to go to school first. Remember that Hoenn anime episode in which a kid with a dusclops couldn't do contests because his mom thought he should study? that kid obcviously goes to a real school so...

He's TEN FUCKING YEARS OLD

Try saying that a little louder in the shipping thread next time. See what kind of response you get...

On education, not everyone has to be a pokemon trainer, right? It seems more of a niche, athlete-type thing to do. I mean, lots of people fill the stadiums, but not all of them participate in the tournaments. I think that if someone's not a trainer, they live a pretty normal life, except with pokemon as partners. I mean, there are machoke at construction sites, and alakazams at laboratories. Most people probably get a regular education.

Fuck shipping :disgust:

But really, Sex Ed to a ten year old? I've never heard of such a thing.

I had it in fifth grade. I was ten. No one got it, but you know, puberty does hit close to that age.

I've always wanted to write a story about all the "normal" people of the pokemon universe. The ones that don't even use pokemon as partners, as you put it. You know there has to be some. You live in a world with all these magical beast who want you to catch them and train them to fight each other using unbelievable magic powers but nah, you want grow up to be a postal service worker or a security guard .

I think they all go to school normally until 5th grade (when kids are about 10)

After that, I think some go on journeys and others stay.

When someone returns from their journey, then they can go to a continuation school or job training, depending on what they want to be.

Maybe they go to school up until they are ten, then leave to go on their journey.

No offense, but that sounds like an extremely boring story.

As for the topic, I'm going to go ahead and say that this is definitely not the most flawed thing in the anime. Any kind of school only exists when the plot of the day allows it to. Therefore, many children are deprived of an education, and occasionally there will be some that go to school.
