How Does Professor Oak Feel About Gary's Arrogant Attitude Toward Ash?

I'm sure Professor Oak is heavily praised for his Pokemon research. However there is something that I must criticize him for:

The way he let his grandson be a dick to Ash and act all arrogant and such.

I've always been curious of how Professor Oak felt about Gary's acting like a complete douchebag during the Kanto and Johto series. If his parents were around, surely they'd be a little more disciplinary towards Gary and then maybe he would have been more well behaved. Unless Gary's parents spoiled him.

Now, Professor Oak has constantly helped Ash become a better Pokemon trainer and always seemed to support Ash becoming a Pokemon Master. Yet he was well aware of the bad blood between Ash and Gary.

One has to wonder how he felt when Ash defeated his grandson in the Johto League match-up.

How do you think Professor Oak felt about Gary's behavior during the Original Series?

To me it felt like Professor Oak let Gary grow into his own character without controlling him . To begin with , Gary was a famous persons Grandson , so some of the arrogance came from that. Anyways , Ash and Gary had been rivals since before their first journey began , and the way i see it - they've been competing in everything , but for the status Gary has , people would set higher standards for him then Ash , so he looks at it the same way and thinks that he's higher then Ash from the beginning . Well , you know the rest - Ash beats him and Gary sees him as an equal , although i'd bet he saw him as that from the beginning.

For the 2nd question , about how Oak felt seeing Ash defeating his Grandson - Either way the match would have ended , he'd be proud about both of them . To him , Ash was like his 2nd Grandson . I can't remember a moment , where he'd put 1 of them before the other .

And about the 3rd, i think he was ok with it . Gary might have been arrogant , but he never did anything wrong , nor just leave someone in a desperate situation . And as we could/can see since then , he's been a great character , confident and smart . I'd love to see him show up for a bit if not more again . I could see him and Ash traveling , he'd bring out so much from Ash i'd bet. :D

When was he ever a complete douchebag in Johto? I only ever recall him being mature and respectful there.

Well, since Gary mellowed out after Ash defeated him, I think he's forgive his grandson...wait, I forget, does the anime state that Gary and Oak are relatives? Or is it a game thing only?

Yes its very firmly established in the first ever episode, and has been continued and mentioned strongly since. Gary even uses the monocle Professor Oak in Sinnoh, and people say its the grandson.

I think he obviously loves Gary, and so was obviously in his corner, but I think in the back of his mind he probably knew that Ash deserved to win over Gary, and as he likes Ash I don't think it would be too hard for him to take.

Oh...well, it's been years since I saw that episode...and the last time I ever saw Gary in Sinnoh (as my interest in the anime started to die) was around when Ash's Gligar evolved.
