How does the Japanese anime compare to the English dub?

I'm currently learning Japanese, and I'd like to start watching the Japanese anime to learn better pronounciation etc. The English anime (particularly the 4Kids era) have lots of adult humor and references in them (like this one) that makes it seem like the crew had so much fun dubbing the episodes. Is the Japanese anime like this as well? Which one is better?
