How does the Japanese version of the anime compare to the English dub?

I'm learning japanese (both for fun and to put on my resume) and am wondering how the writing and voice acting of the Japanese anime compares to the English dub. The English one has some brilliant puns and references for adults here and there (like this one), and you just get the feeling that the writers have thoroughly enjoyed their work. Is the Japanese anime like this too?
