how does this referral thing work?

I want to invite one of my friends to bmgf. But i want to know how this referral thing works? Am i supposed to give him that link mentioned in the settings? The link just takes me to the forum front page. Is that correct or is it not working correctly for me?
 
When signing up for the forum there is a box that the new member can fill in for users who referred them to the forum (if any). When the account has been activated the new user's name will appear in the Referals section on your page.
