I'm talking about the gender of a person. In today's "modern" world, how do you think your gender shall matter in the various fields of life, social and professional?

Well. For one, pregnancy gets a boss pissed =\

Re: How does the sex matter?

You're mixing up the words sex and gender.

Re: How does the sex matter?

The sex always matters.

Re: How does the sex matter?

Yup. As Benny Lopez said "The men are the soldiers, while the women are the maids and cooks. Life would've been better if I had a thing between my legs." (Yep, i take advice from TV)

You're mixing up the words sex and gender.

they are synonyms of each other.

Re: How does the sex matter?

You should probably change the word 'sex' to 'gender' to advoid confusion...

I'm also not sure what dimensions you're asking the question on. If you mean how does it matter personally, I don't discriminate by sex at all, except when looking for a mate of course. In the world, gender definently plays a role, just as it has for thousands of years. Personally, I feel as though the US economy is transforming into a maternal economy, where women are the dominant driver of the economy. While there is still sexual discrimination (Nothing new, just as there is still racism in the world), I feel as though it's influence is shrinking.

Re: How does the sex matter?

If I remember right from last semester, sex= physical (anatomical, chemical, etc.) male/female differences, gender= socially constructed differences.

Re: How does the sex matter?

So I suppose sex wouldn't matter but gender would?

Re: How does the sex matter?

For many people, sex and gender are one and the same. For the people who that doesn't hold for, they have bigger problems.

Anyway, there are still certain societal impulses when discussing certain careers. For instance, construction workers are usually men. Teachers are usually women. There are somewhat generalized biological reasons for these kinds of things, so I don't think they're likely to change soon.

Re: How does the sex matter?

Well yes it matters.

If you are a woman you can bitch and have an excuse.

If you are a man you have to act like you have the biggest cock in the room, lest you be deemed a loser/less of a man.

Re: How does the sex matter?

There are emotional (and physical) differences that keep a particular person from being able to do everything that the opposite sex can do but I think some people are able to surpass some of these limitations.

As far as half-assed generalizations go I'm not a fan.

Women can't pee into the toilet bowl while simultaneously standing up AND a foot away.

The greatness of man....

That's the most ignorant statement I've come across all week.

Re: How does the sex matter?

I think Wigglytuff may have misinterpreted your statement, and thought you meant that "If your sex and gender don't match, you have a (mental) problem!" (or thereabout).

Instead of "People whose sex and gender don't match have to deal with plenty of worse problems in our society than the difference in definition between sex and gender", which, from what I know of you, is what I assume you meant.

Re: How does the sex matter?

Huh. I thought she was trying to point out that people who complain about the words 'gender' and 'sex' being used interchangeably, even though most people view them as synonyms, probably have more important things that they could be worried about. If so, totally agree.

Anyways, as has been pointed out, many careers these days are still genderly biased. Jobs that involve manual labor are more likely going to be carried out by men, as you're average man usually has more physical strength then you're average woman. Since most women aren't very likely to get jobs as construction workers or mechanics, they'll probably find work in less physically demanding jobs, like office work.

Re: How does the sex matter?

That's a simple matter of biology and no amount of militant feminism will change the fact that there are some professions that it is more efficient to hire men as opposed to women.

Huh. I thought she was trying to point out

FYI : Misty (the poster)'s a he, actually.

Arcane - let's rather say that there are some professions where hiring a man would generally be more efficient than a woman (and reversedly).

There is no job that requires you to piss while standing up.

Yes, that was my intention.
