Are you someone who feels like trust needs to be earned, or do you tend to trust people until they give you a reason not to?

I feel like I align more with the latter, but I wish that weren’t the case. It definitely has its disadvantages. I prefer to have my trust be earned, but when it is, I’ll trust you until you give me a reason not to.

How do you feel about trust?

I give everyone the benefit of trust until they do something to lose it. I look at it this way: I wouldn't want people to distrust me, so I won't distrust others. If I reasonably suspect someone's being dishonest and they are someone I have to interact somewhat regularly, I will actually confront them about it. Their reaction will say all I need to know about the person. For people who I optionally have to spend time with, depending on the nature of the infraction, I will confront them as well about it. A continued pattern of various small lies or one really big lie is enough for me to distrust them. No one is perfect, but there are very, very few or possibly no cases where you must lie to someone you care about. Honesty and trust are what all human relationships are built on whether familial, professional, romantic, or platonic

I dont trust easily people and have issues with it because people have lied to me about their intentions and feelings towards me and unfortunately did stuff to me throughout my life. I dont believe trust is a given, I believe it needs to be earned through actions. Words can be meaningless and people can act certain ways, then switch up suddenly and become a nightmare and betray you. People can be charismatic and use pretty words, promise all sorts of things which turn out to be lies and show who they really are. Its best to be cautious. Not to say you should be suspicious of everyone, but be smart and be on guard. Once someone hurts you, they cant undo it.

Ive given people too many chances and benefit of the doubt. Theres such thing as too many chances when a person wont change or better themselves and when you do give people endless chances, they use it to keep you under them forever and keep doing more things to you, keep lying, etc. They count on you never leaving and rejecting power they have over you. They get too comfortable and there is such a thing as being too comfortable doing whatever you like to people regardless of consequences.

I tend to trust women easier than I do men, who I am pretty much always wary of. It's not exactly an ideal way to think, but social anxiety makes it hard to change, lol; it's not like I trust female strangers easily either.

I'm usually quiet and on the defensive in any social situation. It takes a very, very long time for me to relax around somebody. I don't even trust people with my interests, let alone sensitive information.

Online is easier; I can just block if someone bothers me. Don't have that luxury in real life.

As a disabled person, I have to trust others to get what I need/want. I have crutches and a walker. That requires help in various forms. Help requires trust. That said, I trust women more than men, and I trust more in person than I do online. I have to see them face to face to properly trust. They see all of me, I see all of them. I will give a lot of chances, a lot of opportunities, especially if you have a record of previous trustworthiness. If you are new to me, I am much more guarded, and putting the walls down can take time. I do, however, give people the benefit of the doubt unless they prove otherwise.

I really find it hard to trust people (for reasons I don't want to get into) and it's yet to cause any true problems in my life, but it's still something I don't like. I'd like to trust people more. I just can't.

That said, the people I do feel relaxed around (which takes quite a bit), I very much do trust, and trust their judgement until I'm given a good reason not to.

Pretty much not at all. I feel like I can't trust anyone. How do I know that people actually want me around in their lives? So, why should I trust anyone? I don't. Hardly anyone at all. I'm so afraid of being abandoned that I keep everyone at a distance. I hardly even talk to anyone one on one because of it.

i think i'm a fairly trusting person all things considered, maybe to the point of it being to my detriment but that's not really the point. Maybe i'm naively optimistic but i try to always see the good in people and give them the benefit of the doubt whenever i can, the hard part is balancing that desire to give people a chance with not letting others walk all over me.

I would say I have a pretty healthy grasp on trusting others, and my intuition for when someone doesn't warrant as much trust immediately as I would give to someone else is pretty solid (for the most part, and not to say I don't sometimes get it wrong). I know that the grand majority of people don't wish me any ill will, and I should give them the benefit of the doubt and trust that they're being honest/authentic. That being said, I am definitely wary of those who are too open and friendly right away, maybe because I am somewhat cynical. I was actually thinking about this the other day, since one of my coworkers is almost excessively friendly and open in a way that made me wary, but after spending more time around him, I've come to realise that he's genuinely just a very nice guy and I didn't need to be so suspicious, lol.

I feel like I'm kind of somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't say I'm a super closed off person, but it is difficult for me to completely and unquestionably trust most people. I'd honestly say there's VERY few people in my life who get that honor. It's never anything personal, just an unfortunate side effect of having too many friendships in the past go sour lol

Same. There’s literally only one person in my life right now I trust completely, and that’s because she’s proven to me time and time again she can be trusted. I’ve been in my head a lot recently and she’s been patient with me when it does happen. Never made me feel bad for having feelings. So, yeah, there’s a strong underlying trust here.

I don't trust people at all pretty much. I've been bullied and hurt by people too many times. I'm ND so most people automatically know there's something "off" with me and they use that to their advantage, or as an excuse to make fun of me. I feel like everytime I open up I'm knocked back down. It's not worth it anymore, i give people the bare minimum and that's it.
There's only, like, 5 people I can name of the top of my head that I have trust in.

been thinking about this thread lately, but it's a bit hard to give an answer. i think it's because i'm not inherently too distrustful of others, because i think it's fair to give others some leeway, but it's also good to be vigilant and to not let your guard down. so... i suppose somewhere in-between? in other words, keeping people i don't know all too well at arm's length until i feel i can really trust them and get to know them better.

I'm... probably in-between. I do echo some ND thoughts about trusting people (mainly that its easy to take advantage of my goodwill in attitude over the years.) so I've put up a lot of blocks. At the same time, there are things that must get done so you gotta trust that others will help you through that regardless of your familiarity with them.
