How irreversibly screwed can I get?

So, I've always followed guides for pokemon games. Red/yellow/gold/crystal I used those official guides, platinum I used a gamefaqs guide word for word (very tedious reading a sentence and moving a certain way, reading another sentence and moving, etc etc :().

Since platinum was not as fun as I thought it would be (nostalgia-seeker here), I've pondered that it might be due to how I was following a word guide literally letter by letter.. so I'm thinking of playing HG/SS without any guide whatsoever (info sites like bulba will be referred to still).

There seemed to be a few things in Platinum where, if you missed the opportunity the first time, you were screwed.. so I'm worried about this kind of stuff in HG/SS? I'll make sure I have escape ropes and such for caves but is there anything that you can be absolutely screwed by?

Pokemon has and always will be one of those games where you will pull out your hair trying to figure out part of it unless you have a guide.

I think, as of now, the only thing that will screw you over is playing the game in a language you don't understand.

If you've played Gold and/or Silver you should be fine tbh because a huge number of people said it's basically the exact same story and game.

...I've never had that happen. I've had that happen with other games, but never Pokemon. And I've played it without completely understanding the text. :| If you don't just mash through ALL of teh text and ignore it, you can figure out where to go.

All you have to do is pay attention to what the people are saying (skim reading is fine too) and you should be fine. I've been able to make it through Pearl in Japanese by picking words out (or looking them up), so even if you just skim for something that sounds important, you usually will have a clue where to go.

i've never followed a guide for any of the storylines :x i have for things like contests, but i always thought they dropped enough hints that i knew where to go next.

although, i remember being stuck at ice cave in crystal for years before i figured it out...i probably looked at a guide or something then, but i don't remember.

i think playing through HGSS will be easy enough that you won't need a guide.

People need guides to play through the game o_O

There was nothing in Platinum you could miss that would royally screw you over.

As for HGSS, just make sure Whitney actually gives you the badge so you could progress :/

The Lass by her stops you and won't let you pass until you talk to Akane/Whitney again and actually get the badge, so it's REALLY hard to miss. The Squitbottle is though, since no one in the game reminds you to get it. At least forgetting it hits you upon leaving since the Sudowoodo is pretty much in the way to the next town. :p

Wasn't like that in GS ):

I use guides a lot, so i know the levels of the gyms and stratigies. Also, i got stuck in GS in Ice cave. I got stuck in there and i couldnt move on because it was hard to get past the maze.

Though I may be wrong in saying she doesn't let you pass, the girl definitely says to go talk to Whitney again (been a while since I beat her for the badge obviously). Something changed for the better I suppose.

I recall her telling me to say sorry, being nine I was like "pffft fuck that"

People use Pokemon guides?

If I had the money I would buy them just to own them.

I've never had much trouble with a Pokemon game. If I did, I'd use a Lets Play, Youtube video or a Gamefaqs.

Thanks for all the replies.

I don't really have any specific examples of what I mean, but let me try to clarify: Since I'm on a pokemon site I intend to play it more than to just beat the story. When I first made this thread the only concrete thing I could come up with was acquiring the National Dex (I think in Plat if you missed a few trainers here and there you were never able to see the pokemon, couldn't go back to battle some trainers or something) but apparently there is no prerequisite for the National Dex in HG/SS so that is not a concern.

Those are the kinds of things I am talking about - not necessarily game-breaking, but if you desire to play the game in depth they will ruin things. In the end though, if I royally screw something up I can ALWAYS start over I guess and lose nothing but time (trading pokemon/items to other games) so it's all good. I'd just like to avoid that as much as possible is all.

Replies seem pretty evenly split but thankfully I have many months before the game even comes out to decide what I want to do. Thanks all.

I STILL haven't figured out how to make Steven give me a Hoenn starter, nor have I made the guy to give me the Up-Grade appear. I suppose I'll need a guide for that.

You need to have gotten the Kanto Starters from Oak, which requires you beat Red. Dunno about the Up-Grade though.

I don't really use guides but if I ever got one I'd use it to find an item I need, etc. But usually I just like to read through them(a real interesting read, lol) and look at the maps. =3

I've never used a guide for Pokemon games either. I can't recall anything from any games that will "screw" you if you don't do them correctly. Even with puzzles you can just exit and re enter the room to try again if you stuff it up.

Plus guides cost money and playing through by following them to the letter as you described doesn't sound fun at all, which kind of destroys the purpose of a game. And if you get stuck at any point you could always ask one of us :)

...

You know, you could just pull a guide off the internet. No paying needed.
