now that we have a fifth one, it seems like this will go on for another four and a half years. So how many generations will there be before the show ends?

The games will go on forever.

Ash's story in the anime will likely come to a close someday. They'll probably reboot the anime with new heroes when it comes to that.

I wish it'd happen now.

me too, i would like maybe one more gen, but definately not a sixth one. I mean i would miss it if the anime did end but atleast it would get a good ending.

It'll end someday, just like everything (except my life. I won't die [: ). But I picked 9 since you didn't say anything higher. Should've said 9+. ;D That's what I would've voted for.

It'll go on and on and onnn.

I hope it ends while its still liked. It would be very sad if it was stretched to gen 9 and then cancelling it because it isn't a huge success at that time. I voted gen V to be the last but maybe they could go on till gen VI. I don't want to see something as awesome as Pokemon die a hoorible death.

i sense a huge flame war coming to this thread.

anyways, to be honest no on really knows, the games popularity is also a direct influence on the show. a reboot would absolutely destroy everything this franchise has built. just look at yu-gi-oh. (hides in a corner)yeah there are some people who like it still, but there are a huge group of people who just didn't think it was quite the same. me being one of them,

Since the anime is based on the games: we'll go with "the anime will continue as long as the next gen Pokemon video games are produced."

Well,as long games are going strong, anime will continue to air advertizing them, but if any of those two media ends first it will definitely be show.

I doubt 5th generation will be last but i can see anime ending sometime during 10th region(who knows what will happen if it goes for that long).
Of course noone here knows when exactly anime and games will end, with production being stopped but when it comes to cartoon no matter how much people dont want it to happen, sooner or later it will end.
It cant last forever(literally speaking).

Forever. Just like the fourth movie's title.

But, does this even belong here? It discusses more than just the anime.

Pokémon will continue forever, I said it YEARS ago and people laughed at me... see now, these people would never believe it'll still go on for more than 10 years AND be so successful
There's absolutely no reason at all to believe it'll end at all, ever... seriously, they can easily continue it forever and if that stayed so successful for so long, there's no reason for it to ever change - new fans will always join and some crazy old fans like some of us will love it forever

So Pokémon - and that means the anime too - will continue forever
That doesn't mean Ash's story will continue forever... but if they want, it can happen too

Nothing is forever. I don't believe there will be another 2,000 episodes and it will take more than 30 years. The writers will die until then!

It'll keep going as long as it remains profitable, and profitable Nintendo properties have a history of sticking around for a long time (look at Mario, or Zelda, or Metroid, etc.).

What does make me think, though, is how they'll incorporate the previous generations into future ones. Judging by previous trends, Generation V is going to bring us up to approximately 600 Pokémon; I can only imagine how long it would take to obtain them all. It makes me wonder if some Pokémon may end up being "retired", available only in the older games and remakes, kinda like what Ruby and Sapphire did. The backwards compatibility of Black and White with D/P/Pl/HG/SS makes me think that a lot of Pokémon from the first four generations aren't going to be in the new games and will have to be traded from the previous ones.

Tell that to Sazae-san

and it will take more than 30 years.

I hope you realize Pokémon is already going on for 14 years... it's not a random cartoon/game that ended years ago after being around for a short time

The writers will die until then!

*facepalm*
As if they have to keep the same writers... I won't even bother to explain you anything, it's pointless if you say such ridiculous things

They can't replace the writers everytime. I really doubt if the main editors / writers will leave and the show will continue. And I can't believe that Satoshi Tajiri won't be alive and the games will still come out. There are copyrights.

I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves, here. First thing, the anime will last as long as the games will. They could go around in circles forever and the anime would still be going. By now, pokemon has lasted long enough to have had an entirely new generation of fans flock to it in droves, and some of the old fans are still sticking around. True, it's not as popular as it once was, but part of that actually makes it more withstandable. You don't have all the kiddy junk that the first couple gens were associated with. True, we loved it at the time, but some of us WERE kids back then. I wasn't, I was graduating from high school and becoming a young adult, but you can say I was still a little kid at heart. Some of us have even been around so long that we are tired of it. To them I say "Then why are you still here? Go, if that is how you feel." I feel that mentality has overshadowed the internet fandom, and it is making it difficult for me to still enjoy it. I almost lost my dearest friends because we could not agree on the starters. It has since died down, and possibly forgotten, but I will not forget this. The anime fans? They're just as bad, or perhaps even worse, if that's possible. It's not a matter of if it's going to happen, I pretty much know it is. Mark my words, a great majority of you will want to ragequit, and may even do so once all is said and done. I will not question Pokemon could last forever in Japan, but at least on every pokemon forum I know, nostalgia and fatigue have gotten the better of nearly everyone. Notice I said nearly, there are few that still endure and accept whatever Gamefreak does. I do not expect many of you to last past this gen, though. Does that mean that the American fandom is finished? No. I only said the Internet fandom. All the little kiddies that don't go on these forums, or are not even allowed to surf the Internet at all. They all still love pokemon, and I don't think new things matter to them at all. As long as it's pokemon, they'll love it. This part of the fandom outnumbers us by thousands. Even if all of us leave at once, there will still be enough people for Pokemon to still be successful in America, and even in other countries. So how long can it go on? Does it matter how long it can last? Pokemon is already a part of our culture, and will always be one of the biggest names in video game history. Nothing that can be said or done will change that. It may seem ridiculous, but I also think it's ridiculous that Power Rangers still goes on, and yet every new generation of preteens eats it up. I also think it's ridiculous Sonic still has it's fans, even if they are clinically insane. Even if we go, Pokemon will still go on, in some form. Whether it's through the next generation, or in our memories alone.

As long as the series still has enough fans to keep going (and Pokémon is still one of the most popular game franchises, believe it or not), the answer will always be "at least one more". Of course, the anime is decidedly less popular than the games, so it might actually die out eventually. We'll see.
