Forgive me if this thread already exists
Ever since AG, I start to wonder how many move a pokemon can use ?
In the game a pokemon only can use 4 move but its mainly for making place in the screen
But its not the same case in Anime. It's true that during Original series & in manga a pokemon is capable of using limitless attack
But I notice that the Cast Pokemon start to use only 4 move dring AG series so I thought the anime is following the game
But during ''Sinnoh League Saga'' I realise I wasn't right
Just think During Paul & Berry's match, Paul Electrivire use Thunder Punch, Thunder, Protect & Giga Imapect
But during Ash & Paul match, Paul Electrivire use Thunder Punch, Thunder, Protect & Brick Break. The same move it use as a Eleckid during Ash & Paul's 1st battle
But we all saw Eleckid to learn Light screen & Giga Imapect.
But if a Pokemon can't use more than 4 move then Electrivire should forget its previous 2 move
But we see it using all previous 4 move it use as a Eleckid
There are a lot example like this. Now to think of it I believe Ash's Snorlax use 6 move during Ash battle against Greta
So I come up with 3 theory
1) A Pokemon can use limitless move
2)A pokemon capable of using only 4 move. It can't use more then that without forgetting another move
3) A Pokemon can learn & remember limitless move however it only capable of using 4 move per battle
So accodring to theory ''3'' Pikachu is still capable of using volt tackle & also other move it doesn't use but Pikachu can only use 4 move in 1 battle

Re: How many move Anime Pokemon can use ?

there is supposed to be 4, but sometimes that has been broken.

but you wont see a main character with more then 4 moves

Typically, the writers keep it to four moves, but sometimes, they like to alter it. They try to keep to the four move only rule, saying old moves fall into dis-use because they are replaced by stronger ones...which they broke because Pikachu's Electroball replaced Volt Tackle. Honestly, the movesets are shuffled to fit the storyline or the need to introduce more new stuff.

And take Ash's battle against Drake in Pummelo stadium: DRagonite used like six moves in that one battle. Honestly, it's really a gray area, since four moves per battle seems to be what a Pokemon Trainer sticks them to, while they are not truly limited.

It's never really stated how many moves a Pokemon can use at once, though they usually keep it to four per battle. So I'd say four.

I think it would make sense if it was where they could remember all the moves they ever learned, but they can only use four of them per battle. It seems, from looking at Pikachu, at least in Best Wishes, he has seemingly forgotten Volt Tackle to learn Electro Ball. I think we would learn the right answer if Pikachu ever used Volt Tackle again. I find it hard to believe anime-wise they would forget a move to learn a new one since they are capable of understanding human speech, how could they only remember 4 moves?

Generally it's only four at max (at least following Kanto/OI) but there may occasionally be one with more than that most likely due to oversight on the writers' part.

I think they're just repeatedly remembering and forgetting a move from time to time. If I remember correctly, I swear I had seen an episode where Pikachu used THUNDER, but I never seen it again.

Nowadays it's just four moves. Back in the original series there didn't seem to be a limit.

In anime, pokemon learn and use as many moves as they want. I don't like the 4-move limit of the games either :/

In the olden days, pokemon were capable of using whatever moves the writers pulled out of their arses, pretty much. Which did lead to some pokes using a truly ridiculous and unlikely number of moves in any one battle (eg: Ash's Krabby/Kingler, who used no less than eight moves during the Mandi battle).

Nowadays, though, the writers are far more mindful of the four move limit of the games.

Pikachu did use Thunder a number of times in the original series (back when he had just about every generic electric attack of the time in his moveset). Personally, I always thought it redundant having him know Thunderbolt, Thundershock and Thunder (particularly since the writers seemed to use them more-or-less interchangably), so I can't say I really regret those last two disappearing.

u know what Bug me even more ?
There are some attack which are so simple & basic that even a real human can Use them !
Like, Tackle, Bite, Body slam , scratch ,Withdrew, Double Kick , scary face, Slam, Brick Break, Headbutt etc etc .
So why that hell A Pokemon has to forget them to learn a new move OR forget one of their previous move to learn those move !
Plus move like Peck & wing are common for a Bird .
And Horn & stomp attack are common for a animal with horn & Leg.
Move such as Warp & Bind are common for Snack & a animal with whip.
I think Writer should consider that
Because A pokemon should able to use all of those attack without forgetting any of their previous Move.

That's not the reason for it - the limitation is there to stop the issue the anime had when there wasn't those limits, Enter The Dragonite showed this to a ridiculous extent with 10 moves; something that ruins the chance of a 'fair' battle outcome when they can just pull out limitless options for battle.

Yes, in theory, a Pokemon shouldn't forget a move; but considering how ridiculous it was when the anime didn't limit movesets to 4, I'm happy to ignore that.

In the more recent series, it seems Ash and Friends are limited to four moves for their Pokemon. In the episode where Infernape learns Flare Blitz, it's explicitly mentioned that he forgot Flame Wheel. However the same didn't seem to apply for Sinnoh's Gym Leaders. Many of their Pokemon would use four moves in one episode, only to use a different move (or different moveset altogether) in a following episode, with no acknowledgement of learning the moves (not to mention lacking the realistic amount of time to do so).
Roark's Rampardos, Gardenia's Turtwig, Candice's Abomasnow and Volkner's Luxray all had inconsistent movesets, where actually learning new moves would have been unrealistic.
What the writer's have been amazingly consistent with in recent sagas is a four move limit per battle.

In the older sagas...not so much. Remember how Drake (from the orange league) had his Dragonite use a whopping ten moves in one battle? Them damn Champions and their hacked Dragonites...

Amen to that!

Serously, will it hurt GameFreak to let a Pokemon to keep at least FIVE moves? That'll really up the battle strategies!

In the original series Writers just used as many moves as they pleased.

Nowadays they can only use 4 but sometimes Rivals'/CotDs'/Gym Leaders' pokes regularly switch movesets, though most of the time you can do it in the games with move tutor/TMs

Everyone knows its only 4 moves. You have to delete an old move if u already have 4 and want a new one.
