How Many Possible Type Combinations?

Anyone good at math? I'd like to know how many possible type combinations there are, and how many have been used up. Anyone just happen to know?
 
I don't know, but I'm more interested in what things would make good type combos.
 
Well, it'd all depend on if you consider Ground/Rock (like Rhyhorn) and Rock/Ground (like Onix) separate.

And if you consider pure-Fire, pure-Water, and pure everything else to be something like Fire/Fire, Water/Water, and so on...

Same two types, different order yields 17 x 17, 289 combos (with pure types considered as Fire/Fire and the like). Or it yields 17 x 16, 272 combos, with pure types left out.

If you DO consider Ground/Rock and Rock/Ground as the same, though, you have 17 + 16 + 15 + 14 + 13 + 12 + 11 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1, or 153 combos with the single-types treated as two-of-the-same-type dual-types, and 136 without that.

As for those used up... well, again, that's dependent on which way you look at the type combos.
 
I see Rock/Ground and Ground/Rock as essentially the same type combination, and I'd include Pure-types as a combination of two of the same type, so I'll agree that going by that math and overall gameplay construction, there are 153 different possible type combinations.
 
Someone should list them so we can brainstorm ideas for what would be good concepts for them.
 
There's a much easier way of calculating this - either 17C[sub]2[/sub] + 17C[sub]1[/sub] by considering single and dual-type separately, or 18C[sub]2[/sub] by considering the null "type" as a type. (nC[sub]r[/sub] being the notation for the number of [wp=Combination]combinations[/wp] of r items out of a set of n distinct items.) Either way it's 153.

At this point I will note that Grass/Grass is how the game internally represents a pure Grass type.

Alright, so we've got 153 possible combinations. The question is now, how many haven't been done yet? I read somewhere it was around 70 different combinations, but I can't recall if that was before or after Gen IV.
 
Well, I know Normal, Fire and Ghost probably have the least amount of combos

It's not ad hoc, is a well-established formula and can easily be used to consider more complicated combinations such as, how many ways are there of selecting between one and six items out of 493, without repetition, if order does not matter? 493C[sub]1[/sub] + 493C[sub]2[/sub] + 493C[sub]3[/sub] + 493C[sub]4[/sub] + 493C[sub]5[/sub] + 493C[sub]6[/sub] = 19,581,559,665,759.

Electric/Ice would be so fun to use. As well as Fire/Dragon, Poison/Steel and Grass/Dragon.

Well, what types do you think you would see in the 5th gen, or hope to see?
 
In practice, there are probably not 153 usable type combos, eg. fire/ice.
Unless the pokémon created is REALLY wierd.

I want to see an ice/bug type. An ice centipede for example. Or like the moon worm on star wars, but with ice attacks.

Why not?

With the Ideas there is a forum in Genreral Discusion called: Ideas for new Pokemon.

We can give them ideas for new types. In that thread some of us have been thinking about triple-types.
 
We almost had a Electric/Dark type with Rentoraa. If that ain't a Dark Pokémon, then what is? It really should have been. Also, it would make Crunch better...
 
There really is nothing about it that suggest dark out side of its colors. It can see through walls like superman, that's it.

I can't help but agree. I kinda think they should make a Water/Fire Pokemon. Say hello, destruction.

I'd guess that, if that's the case, that Fire, Flying, Bug, & Poison attacks would be programmed to not be x4 effectiveness. Because that would be bad for the Sunflora and Tangela of the world. XD
 
And Icy Ice... Anyway, it isn't really Fire/Fire against Grass/Grass. But Pures are still known to have type combos..
