I hear a lot of fans say how 'terrible' the story-lines are or how mediocre they are, to the point where it's one big excuse plot.

I think they're pretty in-depth and interesting honestly. I play the games for battling and the story.

I'm an aspiring writer. As such, the storyline usually makes or breaks a game for me.

While it's true that the Pokemon story lines are just big excuse plots, that doesn't mean they're intrinsically bad. However, in most cases, they are poorly executed or shallow. This sort of worked for the first two gens, where the plot was primarily the badge collecting, but in the third and fourth gen, where the league challenge takes a back seat to the world saving, it's glaringly obvious how little they cared for the plot. Furthermore, the slightly more carefully written plots of the later gens served to show how underdeveloped the Kanto and Johto stories really were. It's really noticeable when you play through the remakes.

Does it take away my enjoyment from the game? Yes, a little. It's probably the biggest reason I don't like gen III. The Hoenn story was very poorly executed in my opinion. Platinum saved Sinnoh for me, otherwise it would have ended up my least favorite region.

That said, I don't stop playing the game just because it has a sub-par story. So, I guess it doesn't bother me that much.

Still, the whole "travel the region, get eight badges, save the world from a silly looking evil team, beat the elite 4" shtick is getting stale.

Personally, I'd like it if they delved more into the myths of the region. For example, they have only scratched the surface of the Johto legends. Why not make a Johto based game that capitalized on that? I've always wanted a Pokemon game where you (the player character) are an archeologist and travel the region searching for the answers to the mysteries of the world of Pokemon. Obviously, you'd still need to train Pokemon for protection, but the point is that the emphasis should be on the myths and legends of the Pokemon world, not on the battling aspect or the evil teams.

the story isn't much, especially Kanto in HGSS, but it's acceptable. But I'd like the story to be deeper.

i actually woudn't mind if GF had the story continue after the credits (besides charon). I want just a little more.

I think the plot shouldn't be too complex, mostly cause I don't care. But no plot isn't fun either. I'm unsure where I stand.

I don't like how the evil team gets crazier and crazier every generation though. (Mafia -> Trying to drown/fry the world -> Trying to destroy the universe) I still don't like the character saving the world. I like it more as a normal kid, just trying to do his thing and be the best.

I think that Gym Badges should still be included in the story plot, but more of a side mission than an actual requirement.

An evil team should still be incorporated, but have it where the protagonist and the team have crossed paths, and may have even been allies at one point. Following the latter, another person who may have been a close friend of the protagonist is hurt by the betrayal and becomes your rival throughout the game.

Hmm, thinking about this, I could expand it into an entire intro.

Playing through the storyline rarely accounts for more than a quarter of a player's total play time. As such, they are rarely brilliant stories, but still...decent, I guess. Obviously, the climax of the story is the best bit. Nobody can deny that it was awesome when Cyrus bent time and space in Diamond and Pearl. And I liked the attacks on the three lakes bit. It sort of made Team Galactic full blown terrorists.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the story of HeartGold. I think this was because there were three plots running simultaniously...
- Team Rocket's attempts to contact Giovanni
- The running meme of the Kimono Girls, finally leading to the summoning of Ho-Oh/Lugia.
- Eusine's hunt for Suicune/The Burnt Tower/Legendary Beasts plot

The plot had a bit more depth to it.

But in the end, the GOALS of the games really are only realistically achieved AFTER the completion of the main story. The plot is really only something to play through before you really attempt to catch 'em all/enter Contests, etc. It's only there for a little thrill; the plot's not the main focus, unlike other RPGs.

That said, I wouldn't mind a more extensive, interesting plot in Gen 5. :)

The storyline would be much better if you were given the option of joining the villan team. Just imagine how cool that would be be guys.

DPP (and maybe BW) had too big plan, I mean all that space/timestuff, new universe ymv. I really like GSCHGSS storyline, it's nice, realistic and pretty simple. I think, that Gamefreak should focuse more on the trainer-part. Maybe if in BW they made a storyline, that's more like the tv-series: training your pokémons and being the best trainer in the world.

Of course I don't mean, that you should just train your pokémons, and that's it. Small story is always good, but especially in DPP that story was too scifi. I don't know good words to describe it.

It really doesn't bother me if the plot turns into "OMG U HAEV 2 SAVE TEH WORLD XD". When Team Aqua blew everything to s*** in Sapphire, I took it in stride, and just went to catch Kyogre. I just see the possibility of the world ending as a chance to catch the mascot. In any case, from what I've seen, Black and White look like they're going to have a pretty interesting storyline.
As a final note, Red and Blue required you to save Silph. So, Saving a corporation>Saving the world? Really? Is THAT what you guys think?

OK, I'm 11.
I was 4 when I first played Sapphire.
When I first played Sapphire (i.e when I was 4) and reached Mt. Chimney, I was like "Wha-a...? Dropping a meteorite to erupt a volcano to provoke rain? AWESOME!"
Now that I think about it, it's stupid. Before you'd know it, Lavaridge, Fallarbor etc. and even places like Sootopolis or Mossdeep would be covered with lava and likely land.
It's stupid (along with the DP one, too.).
I really want a deeper plot. The Platinum one was sorta okay. But I'm wondering how outrageous plans could get.

Looking at Reshiram and Zekrom and what GF could do to them is scaring me.

the "story" is just to keep children (& simpletons) entertained during the first playthrough - once that bit's out of the way the real game starts

so yeah i don't care much for the story (i don't even know the names of each region - nor do i care...)

although the stories on handhelds have been poor i was happy with the story of coliseum and i think something similar could have been done on the handhelds where rather than random ten year old moves to new town and becomes champion they could actually have some pokemon history

I care for the storyline a lot. Almost as much as the Pokemon.

I love most of the storylines, especially Sinnoh's. Even though Pokemon isn't usually a game for real in-depth plot, Platinum gave us just that. That's why I love the game.

That's why Kanto and Johto utterly disappointed me. No developed storyline whatsoever. HGSS was better, but...

I honestly enjoy every story. In Pokemon, no matter how cliche or stupid it gets, it somehow works. There's just something about this franchise, they could throw anything at me and get away with it... Though I did like Sinnoh's more serious story and Cyrus' plan as a whole.

What I find awesome is that they took Bejeweled (line up 3/4 of the same thing) and made into a grand Pokemon rescue mission in Pokemon Trozei!. xD

For the storylines, I care a lot. That's what actually draws me towards the RPG games and fantasy and such RTS and TBS games. I like to be immersed into the game and actually feel some emotional attatchment to the characters- you can't do that without a good storyline.

I don't really give a damn about the plot, I just like the strategy behind battling. That being said, if it got a bit more plot intense that would be awesome. I really like Colosseum because of the greater emphasis on the story.

I liked Gen I/II's lack of plot. It felt more like you had just discovered a tiny world of your own somewhere, and you could explore in it without having to worry about a huge plot that took up too much space.

Hoenn's plot was horrendous. Ruby was my first game, and at ten, I hated the plot. Emerald was even worse, somehow.

Sinnoh's plot wasn't great up until Platinum. Platinum wasn't bad in a over-the-top sort of way.

I just wish that instead of focusing the plot on the legendary Pokemon, they'd focus more on the world in general.
