How much potential would an older aimed Pokemon series have and what would it look like?

Not to exist, but as a market and a medium?

With Pokemon Generations I think it is safe to say that Pokemon saw there is an audience for something a bit older aimed. That released west first, so they probably also know about difference in trends.

So the question is...could a series aimed at a higher age range work?

How would it come about you think: Streaming service, Toonami co-production [seeing as that seems to be the oldest aimed anime block these days], Netflix deal, etc?

And...what would that even look like? I'd assume it would go 'aiming higher but not unwatchable to younger viewers', as in we would probably not see the protagonist (be it a game character, an older alternate Ash, some original character, etc) having sex on screen or severing limbs, but we might get more mature stories and darker themes and maybe a curse word or two.

There won't be a need for it as older fans don't need to watch a Pokémon series in order to buy the games, and the games aren't even meant for us.
I agree with you there. They wouldn't make much money from having an anime aimed at older people as whilst there is a large fanbase in that category, chances are they would've already been put off by the current anime. Even if it changed, I don't think it would be sustainable. Also, Pokemon is for kids and changing it mature themes would just seem weird tbh.

I actually think they'd be fine. Just do what Digimon did and have content every now and then for adults. I feel like the Alain side series was for adults. Also, Pokemon generations and Origins. Do some adult stuff now and then and we're set. The recent movies are prob more aimed at adults than kids considering Kanto

But still, the older fanbase has become more massive over the years and all this Kanto nostalgia that they've been doing lately was meant with the older players in mind. All of the competitive improvements have also been made for the older players. An anime targeted for the older fanbase will do just fine. It definitely won't have guns or sex, but it will have darker and more mature storylines.

Well, i agree but still i'd love to see something more mature in any terms.
Starting from being more logical (anime psychics works well as long as it' breaking the logic of the games rather than something logical in common sense) and ending on possibly tackling mature topics more often.I think even the current anime has potential to become more mature- the plot of the games is getting darker and anime can roll along with it.
They have a chance to evolve PokeAni into a mature series with small steps- just for sake of making it more enjoyable to watch.

I'd be cool with a series that perhaps aimed at a slightly older audience. Granted if you want mature content from Pokemon just read the manga cause there's plenty there.

Plus I'd say they do a decent enough job at implementing the more intense elements rather than just using them as a substitute for the writing which is also a high point.

So if they were to make a regular anime for the older audience, I'd say take that as the approach or to compare it to another Mon anime I'd say they couldn't go wrong if they went with something similar to Digimon Adventures or Tamers.

An anime series aimed at older adults doesn't necessarily have to have as many episodes as the regular anime. In fact, I think an 8-10 episode season of whatever would suffice.

Something like Origins, the ME specials, Generations and such every now and then would be perfectly fine for the older fans.

As long as it isn't like Digimon tri, then I'm all aboard. I think it'd do pretty well, usual target demographics be damned.

But the recent poll of "did you enjoy Digimon Tri" was 80% yes. The haters are just a vocal minority. ...including you, I suppose. The films were a massive success and also lead to the recent video games being a massive success. Tri was very very successful. and whilst it had a few problems I enjoyed Tri overall

Can you please take Digimon out of this discussion? It doesn't matter at all to Pokemon's direction.

It'd say it's slightly relevant. 80% of the fan base enjoyed the adult aimed series, so we can say 80% would enjoy it in Pokemon too

Yes. I'm one of the most active people in the Digimon fandom and I'm actually quite known. The only hate now a days is from new Pokemon fans who feel they have to attack other series like Digimon, Yugioh and Yokai watch cuz you're only allowed to like one, I guess? they're both monster catching franchises, there's a massive cross over. 99% might be a LITTLE high but I'd only go as low as 90%. Most of the Digimon fan base is mid 20 year olds. Kids aren't really part of the fandom. The vast majority of merchandise is expensive collectables and they all sell out whilst the anime and video games are aimed at the 18-25 age range.

Well, Digimon and Pokemon are completely separate franchises. One doesn't affect the other.

Whilst true, there does seem to be a lot of copying from the Pokemon side. Megas, fusing, talking monsters, taking care of them (Amie/Refresh), evolving backwards, recolours with different types, an island in which you store your dudes and play with them and the new games have added dressing up your Mons. All have these were in Digimon first. Also after Mega they have "Ultra" which is another Digimon thing lol. Also, riding your dudes too

They've also been taking content from Yugioh, Yokai Watch and Persona though
