Hello everybody. I just want to know what your opinions are about how the elite four are chosen. I think that when a new champion is found he gets to choose who is in it, but he usually just leaves them. of course they would get kicked out if they did anything illegal or just wanted to quit

Tournaments. Whenever a member of the Elite 4 resigns/dies/moves on, a tournament is held, attracting the best trainers from around the region. They fight it out, and the winner earns their place as one of them. If two Elite 4 members decide to move on, the top 2 in the tournament are chosen, and so on.

Whenever an existing Elite Four member dies or retires, they usually have someone (or a few different people) in mind to take their place, and they submit the idea to the rest of the Elite Four and the Champion for approval. If it's agreed upon that person is hand-picked to be the next Elite Four member.

If the person dies/retires without picking a successor, the rest of the Elite Four and the Champion hold a meeting to decide on someone.

Usually it's highly skilled trainers--former champions, particularly powerful challengers in the past who didn't quite make it to champion for some reason or another, gym leaders, Frontier Brains, etc. I think the only hard and fast requirement would be that you need eight badges, or if you don't have someone who DOES have eight badges vouch for you.

Also when you first become an Elite Four member (and you're not Unovan) you start at the bottom, as the first member, and whoever was the first member gets promoted to second.

I believe the Elite four in the games are promoted Gym Leaders. At least Koga was.

They could also be other specialty trainers who have passed a certain series of tests.

The games suggest they get invitations after their power has been recognized.

Like Miar said, they're promoted Gym Leaders. Also, the Champion is a promoted Elite 4 member, and the way Gym Leaders get picked is by challenging the Elite Four, then, when they get to the Champion, if they say their performance was good enough, then they can challenge a Gym Leader, both using their strongest Pokemon (by the way, the Pokemon they use against normal challengers who just want badges aren't their strongest), then whoever wins gets the Gym.
That's what I think, anyway.

If the Champion is always a promoted Elite Four member, why are you the next Champion after you beat them?

I think Elite Fours are promoted Gym Leaders, and Champions can be anyone who challenge the Elite Fours and won against them.

Sounds plausible.

Lets all remember that you as the player usually become the Champion after you beat the previous one and its been suggested that when Blue defeated the Elite 4 there was no Champion until then.

Obviously I think that since Gym Leaders are well known and work with the Elite 4 that they'd be at the top of the list for membership

I just thought they disided to join or something.

Or maybe it has to do with worthiness from the champion.

I dunno I never thought into it much, I guess...but the tornament idea is interesting to me. o.o ^_^

What if how it was set up was (and this would be freaking awesome if you could have this set up in an actual pokemon game), when you go through the pokemon league, if you lose to a particular member of the Elite Four, you would gain the title of the previous Elite Four member. For instance you beat Elite Four member number 3 but lose to number 4. So you gain the title of Elite Four Number 3.
It would be also fun to pick a type priority that your team would mainly consist of. However back to the reality of the game, this would conflict with the storyline of most of the games. Still I think it would be fun if they could work this in somehow.

I would love to be either a Fight type Elite Four member or a Water type Elite Four member.

A tournament sounds plausible, but i believe they could be reccomended by current members, or they could be trainers whose power and skill has been recognized, i also would like to believe that not only a tournament, but a test of skill, and care for your Pokémon is held, it could be planned out by the champion, perhaps along with the chairman of that region's pokémon association.

Yes, they're probably promoted Gym leaders, or tournament winners.

I always had an odd theory that they challenged every trainer (of any class) to the most elite (so from youngsters to the Elite Four) until one defeated them, and they'd slot into the place below that opponent.
Probably not, due to the trainer (except Red after RBY) never becoming the champion.

Anime : A big Tournament its held after 3 year where all E4 member , champion and previous League conference winner enter and Battle.
The victor of the tournament become the E4 champion while other top 4 trainer become E4 member.
However , The E4 member get one more chance to Challenge the Champion for His/Her Title. Also The Current year League Conference winner get's one shot at the E4 and Champion.
However , Anyone who want to be a E4 or Champion must win the League conference !
Game : Simply travel and collect 8 Badge.
Then go to pokemon League and Challenge the E4 and Champion.
Trust Me , All other E4 follow this same path.
However , Sometime Gymleader are Promoted to be a E4 and Champion depending on their performance but I believe they still has to Battle other E4 in order to get their position.
After all, E4 and Champion are rank's so the League official can't just give this position to some guy from the street without letting them prove their skill.
Like Alder , Obviously The League official didn't just met him on street and make him a Champion.
He must have done something to show his skill as the strongest trainer in Unova in the past what lead the League official to Ash Alder to be the Champion.

I would see it simply as they are appointed by the champion at the approval of the rest of the Elite 4.

Well the title of Champion isin't necessarily the rank of "Pokemon Master", but in the anime and the games you ideally need to beat the Elite Four and the Champion to become this title, but in the anime it's a little harder to do, as just collecting eight badges isin't enough to enter the E4/Champion. Also in the anime they are portrayed as much more stronger and powerful compared to their game counterparts thus the reason why they have kept their title for so many years.

In the games of course they are much easier to beat naturally, but are still portrayed as powerful none the less. I know how the title Champion is chosen, but to be an Elite Four member it's a little sketchy here and there. One can only assume that when an E4 member has lost a certain amount of battles they get demoted until they are no longer qualified and a stronger trainer then replaces them to climb the ladder to Champion so to speak.

Will of the Elite Four in the games actually hints to this because he states that he worked hard to get to his position as the lowest rank E4 member, so he must have battled the E4 a few times and won enough battles to be qualified as a member. Sometimes also a member can come in through a recommendation rather than battling their way through.

Alder the Champion of Unova is a shining example of how you don't necessarily need to battle your way through to the title because he was just simply asked lol

There's probably diverse ways to appoint an E4 member.

1. Tournaments/battles - they are officially the number 1 rule here. E4 members have to be the strongest of the strongest, so naturally they'd have every candidate battle. In Pokemon Adventures RSE, there seems to have been a tournement because the Pokemon League Association had decided to appoint Wallace as the champion and have Steven join the E4, but then Wallace refused the position. That means there must have been a battle of some sort. I don't think Wallace would've worked his way to be champion like WE do in the games - because that would mean he would've wanted that postion, but seeing that he didn't actually take it there must have been an official tournament that he had to participate in.

2. Special appoints/promotes - Like in Johto Indigo League, Lance becomes the champion and Koga is promoted. The first champion had been your rival in RGBY, but you won him and took the title. Then in GSC, you (as Red) leave the position and to since Lance was the strongest E4 member, he was promoted. Agatha probably retired from her old age, and I don't know what happened to Lorelei, but maybe Koga was the logical choice in the Pokemon League Association's eyes. Karen and Will probably got through another tournament battle.
