How to take images for avatar?

Hey look a noob.
How do I post images that are not saved on my computer? Like if I wanted to make my avatar an image that was posted here but I didn't want to save it.
Help?
 
If it is too big, you can resize it with this. Set the dimensions to 120, the max for most users, and you can have a boxed avatar like I do.
 
To add something, I believe that certain image files won't work. Such as png because you WILL receive a message which looks like this: This BMP image has the incorrect file extension. They have to be a jpg instead. And my response took so long because I thought I could open BMGF on another tab and it wouldn't open all this time. Only Google did so I had to force come on here.
