This is actually a bit of curious research I'm doing with different forum types. Wanting to write a story that falls under the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genera, but a few key characters dynamics require that the story leave the reader feeling uneasy or worried. (Yes, I know my spelling and grammar sucks. My iphone keeps reminding me.)
Very few Sci-Fi things come to mind that pull this off. Dead Space is a good example. Alien VS Preditor 2 was the first in either series that seemed like a horror to me. Fantasy seems easier. Pans Labrynth and Alice: Madness Returns have their shimmers of Horror, probably because both are psychological. What in the Sci-Fi or Fantasy genra can turn it into a horror for you?
For me, it's a sense of "What just happened?" When it seems that a character goes through a lot of grief only to recieve a bad end when they let their guard down, like Hershal from The Walking Dead. For something intended to make the audience cringe was just thrown in, like the boat ride in Willy Wanka's Chocolate Factory. Among the most horrible scenes in any horror was when the Grudge girl comes out from under the bed covers. Still tuck myself in pretty tight at night, like my feet are forming a sneak-proof ghost barrier.
