How to work in Time-skips

There are at least two shows that i'm writing (or at least considering writing) fanfictions for and in both, i'm considering working in a timeskip.

In both scenarios, a few of the basics would be included; the characters being significantly older, much of the setting would be different and maybe, certain characters would be parents at this point. My problem is, i'm not sure how much time to skip.

In some shows and movies, it's only 2-3 years that are skipped, in others, it's 5. But for some of the changes i have in mind, 10 years seems like the right amount, however, that might seem like an unacceptably large amount of time.

Also, while we're on the subject, i also have another issue with Timeskips; they leave me wondering what went on in between.

Any thoughts?

There is no definite answer to the question of how much timeskip is the right amount. It only depends on the story content of your fic.

If during the timeskip, there are many important events that should be write out rather than just a mention in the future time, then it is better not to make too much timeskip, as that "blank time" is not really blank.

If there is no important events to be mention, then you can just make the timeskip as long as you like, until there is important events to be write out according to your in-story timeline.

BTW, the anime Gurren Lagann had a timeskip of 7 years between the first half and second half. I personally felt it was rather short for the world technology to become so advance just in 7 years, so it feels rather illogical.
