How to write a certain character (non pokemon)

I've had this idea for the past few days in my head. An idea for a non Pokemon fanfiction, from a franchise that hasn't seen a new game in years (not counting the AGDI remakes of the first three games or Pheonix Online's The Silver Lining): King's Quest. Yes, the old Sierra adventure game series. Now, you see this owl? (Cedric the Owl - King's Quest Omnipedia) That is Cedric from King's Quest 5, who is considered to be the most annoying character in the entire KQ series. He gives not so helpful advice, gives warnings when you're in trouble waaaay too late to stop anything (by that time, you're already, for example, falling off that cliff), has a high pitched voice (his voice acting is terrible!), and is a coward and doesn't bother to help Graham (our hero) with anything. The one good thing Cedric does for you, is take a magic blast from the villain (Mordack) which kills him and shields you from it so as you won't killed instantly and can start the fight against Mordack. That, and he helps you get to the kingdom of Serenia in the first place thanks to some leftover fairy dust he has on talon with him.

Anyway, my fanfiction idea is: an adaptation of King's Quest 5... with a human and less annoying Cedric! Well, okay, he starts out as the Cedric we all know and hate but after awhile he starts to become braver and less annoying, even saving Grahams life once or twice. My description for him is a young lad (around 20 or so) with brown hair and round glasses, wears a blue vest and brown pants, with a navy blue cape in his bag just in case. As one of the youngest members of the Society of Wizards, he always has a magic wand with him and knows quite a few spells from his mentor/father figure Crispin. An avid bookworm, he knows Serenia like the back of his own hand. He also sleeps with a stuffed owl at night.

As you can imagine, he is very nervous when he finds out that his first "real mission" as a Wizard in training is to successfully guide a KING through Serenia and help him rescue his family from Mordack, especially seeing as he has to protect Graham AND himself! Thusly, he isn't the most confident little fellow and seems to be a coward. Graham eventually just snaps and, while pinning Cedric to a wall trying to choke him, orders him to grow a spine or else he'll leave him behind and fight Mordack on his own. Cedric does show small bits of bravery at certain times, although he claims he was just "panicking" and isn't all that brave. For example, in the bandits camp in the Desert, he quickly shocked a bandit with his wand before he could slice Grahams throat open. Seems to be pretty brave, don't you think? he really starts to be brave when they get to Harpie Island, when he actually tries to fight back against (and sadly fails and gets wounded badly when it barely does anything and the harpies gang up on him) the vicious harpies. By the time Graham and Cedric reach Mordacks Castle, Cedric has proven himself to be just as brave and clever as Graham and they've become good friends. They solve puzzles together, and watch eachothers backs. Although, when they reach Mordacks lab, Cedric hangs back in the hallway and says that this is Grahams fight, not his, and that he should fight him alone. It IS his family after all. Graham convinces him to stay beside him though, and they go in together and figure out how to recharge Crispins Wand (and are definetely annoyed when they figure out the solution is MOLDY CHEESE!). As the final battle against Mordack begins, one change I've made (aside from the character development for Cedric) is that Cedric actually DOESN'T die from Mordacks magic spell that he blasts at Graham. Instead, he is badly hurt (about to collapse), and doesn't die until Mordack morphs into the Flying Sting (this ugly blue thing: Flying Sting - King's Quest Omnipedia, Sting - King's Quest Omnipedia), which Cedric blasts with his wand to get his attention away from Graham (it does nothing but make him all the more angry) which ends in him being stung by Mordack and collapsing in pain on the floor. He dies soon afterwards. Graham actually feels a bit sorry seeing a young life cut so short.

Luckily however, as Mordack dies thanks to Graham putting him out with rain (long story short, he turned himself into fire, and as any Pokemon fan knows Water beats Fire), Crispin arrives -presumedly finished taking care of that emergency in the faraway land he was in before (or did he?!)- and revives Cedric good as new! Hooray! Everyone goes home safe and sound, and years later Cedric tells the story of his big adventure with Graham to his kids.

What I'm asking about character development. I've never really written an "annoying brat" like character before. So, how do I make him be annoying, but still be mature in the end?
