How would Sun and Moon be if the school aspect was removed?

Good question, at the very least it would be the same as previous series with Ash traveling with companions trying to complete the Island Trial's and having multiple fillers, their would definitely be some changes the major one being their is no way they could have all 5 companions personally I doubt they could handle more than 2, they would at least have Lillie no idea who the other person would be, they would also probably have Litten be caught the episode Ash meets it which would make Stoutland's death less impactful, Kukui wouldn't have as prominent a role or relationship with Ash because Ash wouldn't stay at his house, that would also mean a change to Rockruff's capture as well.

Honestly people complain about the School format and it preventing Ash from taking the trial, but I'm 100% positive it would be as slow if it was done the old way as well not to mention most of the episode where we focus on the other characters and see them develop would probably be replaced by boring old CotD fillers.

Expect Gen VIII to go back to that because I expect the trolls at Game Freak to bring back HAs and remove Ride Pokémon next generation.

Well first thing is that they won't have 6 main characters if Ash was traveling they can barely handle 3 main characters traveling which of course means that episode that focused on them would have to be spent doing something different and knowing Pokemon it would probably be spent doing CotD episodes. Theirs also episodes that relies on the fact that Ash is staying in one place such as the Pokebase episode, the Delia episode, and how theirs multiple Litten episodes which would also have to be replaced by some other episode. Theirs also the fact that Alola doesn't have as many prominent locations as other regions meaning that more time would have to be spent in some anime only forest or town on some filler episode.

Jokes aside, it'll probably be closer to the standard format and focus more on the adventure aspect. Also, we could have still the focus on the five characters, but it probably could be more spread out. As in, have a traditional trio (Ash, Lillie and Hau, perhaps?), and have the others take turns in who would be the temporary fourth member.

I feel this would have worked better and would have allowed the characters to develop at a better rate, rather than being fighting for the spotlight all the time.

I’d actually like it much better. Alola is based on Hawaii, and tourists love to explore the islands. If the school part was removed the series could have every episode take place somewhere different, some places not in the games even! Also, as @SonansuMan said...

That could also be there. If that did happen, Team Skull should have more of a spotlight with messing up Alola.

For starters, Ash would be doing a lot more traveling and battling. He probably would be traveling with 2-3 companions, rather than having 5 classmates. One of them would likely be Lillie, due to her massive importance to the game's plot. Secondly, Ash would be actively pursuing his Island Challenge and we probably would have seen him complete Lana's trial 5 episodes ago. Last but not least, it probably wouldn't be very comedy and slice-of-life heavy. I think the comedy would still be there, though it wouldn't be as overwhelming as it is now.
