How would the anime be different if Ash got Clefairy?

What moves would it have? Would Ash still end up getting a Pikachu at some point?

Metronome DEM would become the norm. oh hey you have a Lugia? Well too bad I rolled a Guillotine!

I could see the audience having a harder time seeing him as an skilled trainer. Every time Metronome played a role in an important win people would start questioning his actual battle skills and every time he lost because of it, he would suck because of the same reasons.

Metronome wouldn't be the ultimate lifesaver. Remember when Whitney's Clefairy got Splash? They could always work in bad moves and have Ash try to overcome that handicap. And we wouldn't even have a guarantee that it would know Metronome in the first place, much less keep it for 10000000000000 seasons.

My dream moveset for Ash's Clefairy would be Meteor Mash, Metronome, Signal Beam/Shadow Ball/Psyshock, and Moonlight.

I can just see them spamming Metronome for everything. It can produce BS wins, BS losses and comedy all in a single move.

Though I would actually enjoy it, especially if the Clefairy could talk and constantly trolled Ash.

Actually come to think of it, did I just unintentionally describe one of the manga series? Kind of wish that got translated now.

The anime will become a gag anime just like the gag Pocket Monster manga by Kosaku Anakubo.

And then consequentially, I wouldn't love Pokemon that much as I am now.

Well, the Surge battle wouldn't have had the same significance for a start. A Clefairy vs. Clefable battle probably would have come up at some point, but it would've presumably been with a COTD rather than a gym leader. None of the original eight gym leaders were normal type specialists, and I doubt that they'd have replaced any of the established leaders in order to work this plot in.

Maybe the anime wouldn't even be so popular. I have a hard time picturing boys buying stuff with Clefairy on it, it's not only quite girly, but it's also not very badass-looking. And maybe he would've gotten a Pikachu that would be at Oak's by now. Wow, I just can't picture that...Ash travelling without Pikachu?

Then Ash wouldn't probably have lasted too long. Clefairy is cute but unless they made it more marketable than Pikachu and Eevee, they would have replaced Ash probably after Johto or something.

Off topic: I do however think he should have caught a Clefairy after Butterfree left instead of catching a Krabby that was never barely used.

I also think that the anime wouldn't be too popular. Clefairy is cute, but isn't as marketable as Pikachu, unless they altered the design to where it could pull off being cute and tough in battles. Metronome probably would be used a lot, especially in the original series, and it would result in a lot of cheap wins and comedic moments. It might have been used less after Clefairy could learn different kinds of moves, but I could have seen it be used quite often in the original series.

Clefairy is way too feminine. Pikachu is by no means the manliest organism around but when I think of Clefairy i think of a small doll a 9 year old girl hugs in her sleep.

I wouldn't say that Clefairy looks any less "badass" than Pikachu, personally. The fact that one's pink and one's yellow - if you're conditioned to make such superficial distinctions - doesn't change the fact that the latter looks like an overly-stuffed plush toy (particularly in the early series).

Besides which, remember that Clefairy is one of the main pokemon (alongside Pikachu) in the Pocket Monsters manga. From what I've seen of it, I wouldn't exactly call that depiction "cutesy".

I'm not conditioned to make those distinctions, little 5-year-old boys are. As soon as one kid at school said Clefairy looked girly, all other boys would start saying it as well, and the only boys watching Pokémon would be closet fans. Do you really think Clefairy looks as badass as Pikachu? Both look like plush toys, but Clefairy's also got a cute curls and little wing things. Unless they went for the Pocket Monsters manga design, Clefairy does look cuter than Pikachu. Pikachu can look a tiny bit badass when angry (such as when Shinji was ordering his Pokémon to attack Hikozaru after it had fainted). I can't picture that with Clefairy unless they changed its design, which might've even changed the whole franchise, not just the anime. I really do wonder what would've happened. Would Pokémon in general be as successful? The games were popular by themselves, but the anime made its popularity soar worldwide, so it really does make me wonder.

The only thing we can be sure of is that we'd be getting that freaking Metronome every single episode, which would be so horrible I don't even want to imagine it XD

Like others, I also think the series might not have been quite as popular due to Pikachu being a better marketing tool to both genders. Not certain, but it seems more likely. Not to mention, Pikachu's design was in part so that he'd be easily recognizable. Clefairy's not too exciting in comparison and I wouldn't see as many boys getting too attached to it and wanting it on their backpacks or shirts.

As for the actual Anime content: I also think we'd have gotten all kinds of BS DEM Metronome wins. Just look at how many he has now without a move that can turn into ANY move. He'd be surpassing type disadvantages and just over-relying on the move to the point where it'd also contribute to his losses.

Additionally, without Pikachu, there'd be no Destroying-The- Bike gag, unless implemented by Clafairy's metronome. In fact, every time Pikachu shocks someone might have been Clefairy randomly Metromoning powerful moves on everyone. Which, in itself, would be even more of a gag. Then again, I don't really see anything causing it to get reset each time Ash would go to a new region, though, (which may, or may not be a good thing).

Basically, I think he's better off with Pikachu. Besides, I like him more~

Everything would be different. Gags including characters or bikes getting shocked would no longer exist, unless Clefairy would also know electric-type moves or randomly metronome electric attacks a lot. In fact anything that involves electricity would probably be non-existent or taken over by another Pokémon.

A lot of gym battles would have been different. Lt. Surge's for one thing would have been totally different unless Ash were to catch another Pikachu later. And speaking of Surge's battle, I wonder if there would be some situation in which his Clefairy would refuse a Moon Stone to prevent it's evolution.

As for marketing, I do think that Clefairy may or may not have been as popular with young boys unless they gave it a good personality that would appeal to them. Maybe, and hopefully, not like the Pocket Monsters manga Clefairy. In fact maybe it could have Pikachu's personality and still appeal to young boys. But I'm glad we got Pikachu since I just find it more marketable to both genders.

And Pikachu's got Raggedy Ann-style red cheeks.

Honestly? I think that Jigglypuff looks more badass than the both of them when he's angry - curled quiff, pinkness and all. :p

Haha, yeah, but somehow Pikachu still looks more neutral to me. Haahahahaa, I actually thought that was adorable when I was 6, at the time Jigglypuff was one of my favorites because of it :P

Boys don't naturally direct their attention to things that are considered masculine, nor do girls direct their attention to things that are considered feminine, but I'm sore someone has a dubious study about how I'm actually wrong, that boys do naturally like cars and girls dolls. But anyway, these schemas are the cause of upbringing and society. Girls are raised as girls and boys are raised as boys, and they are made to believe that these things are for girls, these things are for boys.

I don't think having a Clefairy would hurt the anime that much, especially since it would have a personality that doesn't reflect it's '' cute '' appearance. If Ash did get Clefairy, the anime would've been far more comedic, I believe, which for some might be horrible, but for some great. Plus the fact that we would have gotten used to the fact that Ash would be with a Clefairy, so it wouldn't seem as confusing as it does now that Ash has been travelling with Pikachu for years and years.
