Since we're in the midst of a very debatable Unova League right now, I got to thinking about Ash's experience in all the past Leagues so far. To be honest, I felt like the Hoenn League arc is overshadowed by both the Johto and Sinnoh Leagues and the Grand Festival, which took place right before it. I think it may be because those two had such great rival episodes, and Ash made pretty good rankings in each. Kanto is a little bit of a different story, obviously, because of the whole Charizard-disobeying-Ash thing and because he had very little experience back then.
The absence of rivals is a little controversial for this season, but I think it was okay because Ash had matured a lot by this point and there really was no need for a pushy, overconfident opponent to fire him up (Morrison and Harrison were good rivals, don't get me wrong- I'm just talking in a Gary, Paul, and Trip perspective). The only con about this? The Hoenn League, IMO, really just paled in comparison to the others without any primary rivals. There were definitely some good points, but I can barely remember anything that noteworthy happening.
