Since rumours are flying around that Rockruff gets Version Exclusive Evolutions as mentioned in the CoroCoro, how would you feel if the starters too get split evolutions?

Would you like them to be version exclusive, or should they remain determined by day/night?

Personally, I'd love split evolutions, though, if they're version exclusive, I'd feel bad. I do not play the core series games, but I could understand the despair of those who'd already pre-ordered the version which has the more hated evolution.

What do you think?

I would like to have split evolutions/forms based on day and night, I think it's great to have more choice like that.

Making them version exclusive would not only give us less choice, it would be incredibly hard to choose a version. It may be that you like Litten's evolution in one version and Rowlet's in another for example. I've always disliked version exclusives, since I haven't had anyone to trade with in most of the games and I really want to catch and evolve my own Pokémon, instead of getting one from someone else. But with Rockruff's evo's probably being version exclusive, I can see the starters getting the exact same treatment...

I'd like this idea. To me it really shakes things up and keeps things interesting. That and I really dislike a certain leak of a certain fire starter so an alternative would be appreciated.

So many people hatin on Luchalitten. Wonder trade me all the luchalitten I will start my very own WWE exclusively with Luchalitten. I'll be Pinks McMon.

Speaking of wonder trade, I think if version exclusive evolutions are a thing we should totally toss our exclusives into Wonder Trade to help others get them more easily.

Starters aren't very interesting and don't feel all that unique anymore and like the rest of the (previous) games their formula is pretty overdone and stale, so I wouldn't mind some sort of shake up to them. Not sure about version exclusive evolutions for them, since you have to pick between them at the start anyway, so further restrictions on versions seems a bit much, but day/night would be ok for me and the concept does fit with the time differences between Sun and Moon.

But I'm not too bothered what happens since I'm happy with Rowlet's leaked evolution, even though it would be really good to see Game Freak go for another tradition-breaking idea with these games.

Wondertrade means the pokemon will go to some random person, even someone having the same version as you. Wonder trade is not the answer. GTS is the answer :)

On topic, I would like split day/night evolutions and not version exclusives.

Somethings shouldn't be tampered with IMO. I like the Starter formula they have. I don't really see why it needs to be shaken up.

If they get split evolutions based on the version, that would bring up a number of questions. What if I obtain a Rowlet in Pokemon Sun and then trade it to Pokemon Moon? Would it evolve into the Moon!version because it's the one it hit evolution level in, or the Sun!version because it is tagged as a Sun Pokemon?

Where's the "I don't mind" option?

Personally it doesn't really bother me whether the starters have split evolutions or not as long as I like one of them enough to put on my team.

Although that said I wouldn't like it if the starter split evolutions were version exclusives, other than that I'm not worried.

I am fine with things remaining traditional too. No issues here. Starters are a tradition and sometimes they ought to be kept :) I'm open for change as well. My reason for preferring split evos is so people can stop hating on litten3 and finally get the mons they like :)

I really hope they are not version exclusive, but after seeing the rockruff scans not being detailed if his is version exclusive, i bet they will do version exclusive if rockruff is too.
I mean if it was merely night/day, that gives one player 6 options for a starter...
On Top of it, if they are exclusive, it will deter players from tampering with the time on the games, which it looks like GF wants us to play as originally intended.
Luckily, I have not pre-ordered as it is starting to look like version exclusive is a huge deal this time around. And luckily I like both legendaries (though Lunala is growing on me more so than Solgaleo)
Rockruff wise I really like the day one...
Starter wise, some think the "mallow scan" starter evolultion will be moon's or night's starter form. -all that was found out was design not typing-
Perhaps the day are the ones that Icon fishing was done when they first came out -all that was found out was typing not design-
for that you can look here as a few have not heard of this one:

mallow scan,

Dual evolutions for the starters is my most wanted thing right now. Mainly because none of the leaked evos quite does it for me but it would also be a great way to change up yet another relatively stale part of the series (and SM seem to be all about shaking up the old formula).

I actually wouldn't mind if they're version exclusive since I haven't committed to buying either game yet. Plus the games will be out 5 days late here in Europe so I'll have more time to choose.

you know i was thinking....

If Rockruff- evolution depends on the legendary pokemon
If Starters- evolution depended on the legendary pokemon, then maybe there is no middle stage. this would save room on the dex and memory, plus it would explain why we keep seeing all these trailers with the starter's first form doing these powerful attacks. They evolve later in game and only have one evolution ex poplio and then its final (the final having 2 forms which depends on the legendary pokemon)

Except we know there are 2 empty slots after each starter in the Pokedex.

Seems like it'd be much less of a headache to just keep their evolutions limited to one and to give those some kind of Mega-like power-up, perhaps having to do with those new Z-Moves, or something, I dunno. :p

I wouldn't love it, personally. I mean, if I ended up with a version that didn't offer the evolution that I liked, then it would only be a minor hassle of having to trade it to my girlfriend's game and evolve it there, but I've always liked to keep my playthrough as internalized as possible. Wouldn't be the end of the world, but I imagine it being frustrating for a lot of people.

Edit: That's in regards to version-exclusive evolutions, to be clear. If it's just day/night variations then yeah sure, go nuts.

I would love to see day/night split evolutions. Seeing GF do something like this with the starter evolutions would be outright insane, but a very smart idea. I especially like it because if those starter evolutions we saw are really real, than they have counterparts, ones that we haven't seen. Im still not too fond of the final evolution for Litten, who has been my main choice for a starter since the day we were introduced to him, so to see an alternate one would be awesome. I do hope it is just day/night, not version exclusive.

I think its a fun idea and I would like it. The starters havent gotten something like that ever before, so Id welcome this change to make them stand out. Im getting both versions so it would give me an excuse to play both. Plus I want to see what they will have come up with for the alternative forms.

I think that the idea of a split evolution for the starters sounds pretty neat and it could work for this generation in particular due to how all of the different changes they've been going for lately. But I would want it to be a day/night evolution instead of a version exclusive evolution. It would be pretty upsetting for people if they wanted a particular evolved form of a starter only to find out that it's only available in the other version, especially when we probably won't get the final forms of the starters revealed until after the games have come out and people are in a mad dash to find out all of the secrets of the games. Making the evolutions depending on the time of day is a lot easier for fans to manage by comparison.

curious, what makes you think we won't know the final starters before game release?
