Dear all, I saw many complains made about how useless Citron/Clemont was to Pokemon XY(&Z) so I would like to hear from you all how you would have improved on his character. <3

I would have made a mad scientist recurring character which would be Clemont's idol, like Aria but done right. If you have an idea for a game character that could fill that role, let me know.

I would have switched Luxray and Heliolisk's roles because, you know, the latter is actually Gen VI.

Instead of "Chespin meets his evos" fillers, "Chespin battles his evos and learns moves" episodes.

I would develop more the university campus and its influence in Clemont, maybe his mom could work there, it would be his goal.

Blaziken Mask reveal coming waaaaaaaay before and having a higher emotional impact.

I would have made Clemont help Serena finding her goal and then with some machines that would help her practice showcases, and he would eventualy fall in love with her. Clemont would be conflicted between his friendship with Ash and his love for Serena. After a lot of hints and a lot of rage from the fans Clemont confeses to Serena and she falls for him, because who would be with someone who lost the Kalos League. Serena and Clemont, with Bonnie, would go to Hoenn afterwards. Bonnie would have a cute moment saying she was relieved as she reached her goal of finding the perfect girlfriend for his brother.

Clemont would not be dead weight as he would still have an impact on Serena and Ash.
Bonnie's gag would have a heartwarming conclusion.
Serena would not say machism bullshit at the end, instead, she would show development as she was able to let Ash go.
Ash's first kiss could be with Misty.
Everyone in-universe is happy.

I actually liked Clemont as a character, but I really wish the writers had fleshed him out way more than they did. So that would probably be one of the major changes I'd make. For example: they had started off relatively strong with his father being Blaziken Mask, and it really didn't go anywhere. The build up died off and the payoff was extremely disappointing. I wish they had given a reason for the whole thing. Why did Meyer decide to become Blaziken Mask in the first place? Did it have something to do with Clemont and Bonnie's mother, who was never mentioned and who we know nothing about? Did it have any kind of impact on Clemont and Bonnie as children? Obviously they didn't know about the secret identity, but was he sneaking out around their bedtimes? Missing birthdays or other milestones and important events? Clemont's relationship with Meyer seemed to have some intriciacies that were never really expanded upon. Clemont's family background and childhood had a lot of potential to be pretty interesting had they fleshed it out more (especially with the whole "attending a special electric-type academy" plot point that I actually quite enjoyed.)

I also would've liked to see him use the Pokémon he had at the gym more often, particularly Heliolisk. I honestly disliked how Clemont was praised as this electric type specialist (a student at the electric type academy, an electric type gym leader), yet his two most used Pokémon were Bunnelby and Chespin (who was pretty much unbearable). Heliolisk was one of the cooler Pokémon in XY, in my opinion, so the fact that they gave one to Clemont and then pretty much neglected it was a real shame. We didn't get to see Clemont work with his electric type Pokemon nearly enough. If I could permanently switch out Chespin for Heliolisk, I would do so in a heartbeat.

Seeing Clemont get more involved in battles would've also been cool. I understand a big part of his character, especially in the beginning of the series, was his insecurities, particularly when it came to battling and self confidence. But the resolution to that ended up feeling pretty rushed and, truthfully, half assed. I would've liked to see a more gradual buildup to that change, and to see Clemont get even more engaged in battles as the series progressed. In fairness, though, this was something the entire XY cast suffered from. It really felt like "Ash vs. everyone" while Clemont, Bonnie, and Serena watched from the sidelines. But considering Clemont's storyline, a bit more effort into his battle participation would've gone a long way.

I personally think he actually wasn’t that good compared to what he could have been. I think the best bet to make him better was to have him be more of a contrast to Ash. He’s much more focused on his inventions and machines to care for and bond with his Pokemon and only when he meets Ash he realizes how little time he spends with his Pokemon. Clembot would be written out entirely and Meyer would be the leader as he leaves. As the series goes on his inventions are built to also help Pokemon and become more successful. When he returns to the gym he is very friendly to his Pokemon, confusing them as Clemont was mostly focused on his inventions before.

Bonnie would be directly effected by his changes as well and eventually Clemont allows her to become a trainer even though it’s against the rules. It really would showcase what the series is about: Bonds with Pokemon.

That's a great idea actually. Maybe Bill? I googled and found this.

The Science/Electric academy/university thing was something that was actually really interesting to me since I'm very curious about education systems in the Pokemon world and yes I am indeed somewhat disappointed that they didn't explore it further. It could have been really cool, especially since he met Shinx there when Shinx isn't even native to Kalos.

OMG there was actually moments in XY where I felt like there's something going on between Serena and Citron. It just sort of makes sense imo. But then I also kind of ship Citron and Ash lol. And also Serena and Ash. Lol all his companions in XY were lowkey in love with him. >.<

Absolutely agree with this. He is definitely a powerful trainer, it's a shame we didn't get to see more of his skills.
