HP Scanjet Scanner problems

Lately, I can't seem to open my scanner program. I can turn it on, but only if I hit the button on the scanner itself, and that doesn't let me see a preview image. The actual program won't open.

The only thing that's different about my computer now is that I upgraded to the (awful) new IE program. Could that be the problem?

Incidentially, how do I get the *old* IE back? It was a lot easier to use.

You can try to uninstall the update, but it seems unlikely that it is an option.
