I think this and some other features need to be turned off. Not sure if this is causing the downtimes.

If this one is being over-used by people, I could certainly see how it may be an issue on load. I highly doubt it would be causing the downtimes unless it's being heavily targeted and used by people though. It only works when you're logged in, so it can't be used by search engine bots and such.

After some quick checks, I can confirm this isn't a problem for load. It's actually less of a load issue than the "What's New?". So use it to your heart's content.
